Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Elko NV 140 PM PDT Sun Mar 24 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Look for a mix of rain and snow showers across much of northern and central Nevada through Tuesday with a breezy northwest winds during the afternoon hours. However, impacts from snow will mainly be in the early morning hours as temperatures fall into the 20s overnight. Wednesday will see a brief warmup before another low pressure system brings additional rain and snow to the area Thursday with lingering precipitation through the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night. Radar loop at this time is showing pop-up showers over the forecast area this afternoon. Accumulations taken by remote observation instruments are generally around 0.10" or less though a few select locations are showing between 0.15 and 0.30 inches. Models are currently showing the isolated to scattered showers over the forecast area tonight. Winds are expected to diminish through the overnight hours. Lows will be in the 20s. Snow amounts through Monday morning will be up to a half-inch. For Monday and Monday night, the main upper low will have shifted east across the front range of the Rockies and Great Plains. Meanwhile a shortwave in the flow will skirt through northern and central Nevada. Look for accumulations to remain light with up to a half inch in the valleys with an inch or two in the mountains. Winds will remain breezy in the afternoon out of the northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s. Northwest flow will continue during the overnight with mainly isolated to scattered snow showers north of and including US Highway 50. Snow amounts will again remain light with overnight lows in the 20s. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday Light snow showers continue Tuesday as a weak boundary passes thru the region. Showers focused across northern Nevada and any valley snow showers that are observed will produce little to accumulation. 1-3 inches possible for the Ruby Mtns/E Humboldt Range. Breezy northwesterly winds with gusts around 25 mph also in place Tuesday. Transient upper ridge moves thru on Wednesday with latest guidance indicating a deep closed low off shore of the PacNW. Generally fair yet with breezy southwesterly winds Wednesday as a cold front also encroaches from the northwest. As alluded to, next cold front pushes in from the northwest late Wednesday or early Thursday with light rain and snow forecast. Deep upper low digs south along the coast Friday with active weather and precipitation persisting thru the weekend. Slightly better agreement among numerical models pertaining to the evolution of the upper low with consensus moving toward the low digging south along the coast and moving inland into SoCal by next Sunday. Temperatures slightly warmer Wednesday under the upper ridge with daytime highs currently forecast in the 50s. Cooling trend Thursday with daytime highs returning to low 40s to low 50s by Friday. Overnight lows follow a similar pattern with Wednesday night lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s, returning to mostly 20s Thursday night. && .AVIATION...Showers taper off this evening with cloud cover and winds also decreasing. VFR conditions expected overnight and tomorrow morning. Instability snow showers return Monday afternoon with increased cloud cover and varying CIGs.
