.SYNOPSIS...Look for strong winds to redevelop area-wide today
across northern and central Nevada with some hazy skies possible due
to blowing dust. A strong winter storm will bring widespread
moderate to heavy snowfall over the weekend. This will bring
hazardous travel conditions at times, with blowing and drifting of
snow expected Saturday into Sunday. Quieter weather is forecast
for the early portions of next week.

SYNOPSIS...Look for strong winds to redevelop area-wide today
across northern and central Nevada with some hazy skies possible due
to blowing dust. A strong winter storm will bring widespread
moderate to heavy snowfall over the weekend. This will bring
hazardous travel conditions at times, with blowing and drifting of
snow expected Saturday into Sunday. Quieter weather is forecast
for the early portions of next week.

SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night. This morning's radar
loop is showing weak returns across Humboldt and northwestern
Elko county. Nevada Department of Transportation webcams are
showing light snow showers occurring in these areas. For today,
all models are showing a very strong and potent upper level low
pressure system spinning west of British Columbia, Canada this
morning. All areas will see another day of strong to very strong
winds. All zones will be under a wind advisory by late morning.
Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph is expected. In
addition, snow showers across northern Elko county will develop
today as well, with a winter storm warning in effect for northern
Elko county and the Ruby Mountains. Highs will be in the 40s and
50s, with cooler temperatures in the 30s seen in northern Elko
county. During the overnight into Saturday, winds are expected to
remain breezy during the night with snow showers becoming more
widespread in northern Nevada. These showers will move southward
as a cold front marches through the state tonight. Overnight lows
will be in the 20s to low 30s.

Northern and central Nevada are expected to be in the middle of a
major winter storm Saturday and Saturday night. Strong southwest
to west winds will continue through the period with blowing and
drifting snow combining with falling snow to bring hazardous and
slick driving conditions over much of the area. Blizzard warnings
for White Pine county and the Ruby Mountains are in effect, as
well as winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories. High
temperatures will be in the 40s but are expected to occur after
midnight Saturday morning. A strong cold front will push through
the area on Saturday bringing in that colder air. Winds will
continue to remain strong throughout Saturday. Overnight lows
Saturday will be in the 20s. Storm total snowfall is likely to
range one to four inches in the valleys and three to seven inches
at higher elevations and passes across Humboldt County and
Northern Nye County. Northern Lander/Eureka and southwest Elko
counties are expected to receive between two to seven inches for
valleys and five to ten inches at higher elevations and passes.
Southern Lander/Eureka and White Pine counties will likely see
between five to ten inches of snow for valley areas and six to
twelve inches at higher elevations and passes. Mountain areas,
including Wheeler Peak and Ruby Mountains expected to see between
one to two feet of snowfall. Locally higher amounts are possible
at all locations.

LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday.

Sunday, the trough begins to lift to the northeast. Some snow
showers will exist throughout the day, with westerly winds 20-25
mph, gusting 25-30 mph. In general valleys will see up to 1 inch
of new snow, with higher passes seeing 2 inches. Lows Sunday
night will be in the teens and 20s for most, with colder spots
dipping into the single digits.

Monday some nuisance snow showers linger leading to some areas
seeing a couple tenths of an inch, otherwise winds will be fairly
light. Lows will be in the teens and 20s.

Tuesday there will be some brief zonal flow out ahead of the next
arriving weather system. Tuesday will be dry, with light winds,
and Highs in the 30s and 40s.

Wednesday and Thursday a positively tilted offshore trough will
move into the coastal areas of California. Some snow showers are
expected each day with snow levels remaining below 4000 feet.
Most valleys wont see accumulating snow, even in areas that do,
only a few tenths of an inch is currently expected.

Models and Ensembles are showing some discrepancies toward the
end of next week, there may be lingering snow showers, or a brief
ridge that sets up out ahead of the next weather system. Either
way it appears the area will continue the general pattern of a few
days of active weather, with a day or two break in-between.

AVIATION...A storm system moving into NW Nevada early this
morning will begin to produce gusty winds at KWMC before sunrise.
By the late morning hours winds at the remaining terminals will
all be S-SW 15-20kt gusting 25-30kts. Blowing dust will be a
concern across the region this afternoon, with best chances at
KWMC and KBAM in the afternoon and early evening hours. Winds and
gusts will decrease somewhat into the early evening hours.
Precipitation associated with the incoming system will reach KWMC
KBAM and KEKO by the mid to late evening hours. Rain will change
over to snow late this evening at KWMC KBAM and KEKO.
