Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1238 PM PST Thu Feb 29 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Very windy conditions continues over Nevada this afternoon followed by winter weather over the weekend and into the next week. This system is expected to impact the area with high winds, heavy snowfall, and much cooler temperatures. Travel will be affected across much of the region. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday High wind conditions continue into the overnight hours across the region with chances of precipitation making its way over northern Nevada. Chances of rain/snow at 30-70% is expected overnight into Friday, starting in Humboldt county at 50-70%, shifting east towards northern Elko County, then the chances are expected to propagate uniformly between 40-60% across all of northern Nevada and into norther Eureka and Lander Counties. High winds overnight causing the potential of blowing dust with speeds at 30-40 mph in higher elevations with gusts as high as 45-50 mph for Humboldt County, western Nye County, and Lander County. Eureka County, Elko County, and White Pine County are expecting wind speeds of 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph, potentially stronger at higher elevations and mountains tops. Western Nye county expected to have wind speeds of 15-25 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday Saturday, the upper level trough that is bringing the winter weather will settle over the state, bringing in chances for heavy snow and gusty winds. Chances for rain/snow is expected to reach up to 70-90% across central and northern Nevada in the first half of Saturday and slowly diminish down to 50-60% by the evening hours. Snow levels throughout Saturday are expected to drop below 4000 feet, down to 3000 feet in the afternoon, however there is potential for rain/wet snow as high temperatures are expected to reach above freezing in the 40s. Overnight lows expected to drop into the teens to 20s making all precipitation fall as snow. Snowfall is likely to range 1-3 inches in the valleys and 3-5 inches at higher elevations and passes across Humboldt County and Northern Nye County. Lander and Eureka counties could see between 3-6 inches for valleys and 5-10 inches at higher elevations and passes. Elko County and White Pine County likely to see between 3-7 inches of snow for valley areas and 7-11 inches at higher elevations and passes. Mountain areas, including Wheeler Peak and Ruby Mountains expected to see between 10-18 inches of snowfall. High winds over Saturday expected to continue with speeds of 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph for central and northern Nevada with the exception of Northern Nye and White Pine Counties, which is expected to see sustained winds of 30-45 mph with gusts as high as 50-70 mph. Sunday will see more winter weather but the upper level trough begins to head eastward, making the weather a little less milder. Westerly winds still expected to be breezy but in the ranges of 15-20 mph with higher elevations reaching as high as 35 mph. Gusts expected to reach between 20-30 mph in lower elevations and 35-40 mph at higher elevations. Chances for precipitation expected to be between 30-60% in the morning hours and dissipate quickly to below 20% across the region during the day with some lingering showers. Temperatures expected to be much cooler from the passing cold front with highs only in the 20s to 30s and lows potentially reaching single digits to teens. Monday and Tuesday expected to have a break from the active weather as a slight ridge builds up behind the trough. Winds expected to be light with temperatures still cold as highs expected to remain in the 20s to 30s Monday, but gradually warm back into the 30s to 40s Tuesday. Lows Monday still expected to be in the single digits to teens, but reach into the teens to 20s by Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday, models are showing another upper level trough moving south over the southwestern U.S. bringing in another round of breezy winds, precipitation, and cooler temperatures. High temperatures expected to reach in the 30s to 40s (50s for N. Nye County) Wednesday, however, the passing front will make highs back down into the 30s to 40s Thursday. Lows both days expected to be in the teens to 20s. Chances of precipitation returns to the region with a 20-35% chance across the region, however the values for these days could change as there is low confidence on the location of the low pressure system. && .AVIATION...S-SW winds of sustained 20-25 kts with gusty winds of 30 kts or greater expected at all terminals. The high winds are expected at all terminals over the next 24 hour period. Blowing dust will be a concern across the region. Precipitations associated with this weather system is expected to reach the northern terminals in the late afternoon to overnight hours starting at KWMC and moving east towards KEKO early next morning.
