Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1219 AM PST Tue Dec 17 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Rain and snow showers will linger in Elko County today as a storm system exits the region. A warming trend is expected Wednesday through Saturday. By Saturday afternoon, high temperatures will be twelve to fourteen degrees above normal for this time of year. The next storm system may impact Northern Nevada Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night An atmospheric disturbance over the Pacific Northwest this morning will be pushed northward this afternoon by a building ridge of high pressure. A few valley rain showers and mountain snow showers will linger in Elko County today. High temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon will be six to eight degrees above normal for this time of year. A ridge of high pressure will be centered over the Silver States tonight through Wednesday night. Low temperatures across Northern and Central Nevada both tonight and Wednesday night will be six to eight degrees above seasonal values. High temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada Wednesday afternoon will be around five degrees warmer than this afternoon. Light winds Thursday and Friday with Saturday seeing some patchy breezes from the south at 10-15 mph. By Saturday afternoon, cloud cover is expected to move in as models are showing another trough system making its way from the northwest and expecting to bring more chances of weather conditions by Sunday. Sunday and Monday, the upper level trough pushes the ridge further east, weakening it. Chances for precipitation begin to trickle in mainly over northern Nevada Sunday with chances up to 20-30% along I-80 corridor, with up to 45-55% chance along the border with Idaho, while south of the I-80 remains dry. Monday, chances remain mostly the same, staying in the northern Nevada along and north of the I-80 corridor until Monday evening when chances begin to increase further southeast extending into central Nevada. Temperatures will be slightly cooler but remain above normal with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s to 30s. Light winds Sunday, with Monday winds expected to elevate to 10-15 mph along mountain ranges while staying calm at lower elevations. && .AVIATION... An upper-level disturbance will move eastward into Utah through Tuesday. Very light valley wind along with recent precipitaion and some clearing will allow for pockets of fog to develop along I-80, particularly at KBAM and KEKO where relative humidity is near 100%. Otherwise, snow showers will continue to diminish through Tuesday morning with additional showers redeveloping mainly north of I-80 Tuesday afternoon with around a 10% chance of a wintry mix at KWMC, KBAM and 15% chance at KEKO. With the exception of potential fog impacts, ceilings will improve through Tuesday as ridging begins to build in form the west. VFR conditions will persist at KTPH and KEKO through Tuesday while remaining dry through Tuesday.
