Issued at 853 PM CST Mon Feb 19 2024 No significant changes made to the forecast this evening. Virga or a few sprinkles may fall across northern portions of the Midsouth tonight as a weak shortwave moves across Missouri. However, with dew points in the 30s, most of it should remain virga. Temperatures are currently in the upper 30s to middle 40s with morning lows expected to fall into the low to middle 30s. After tonight, additional freezing temperatures do not look likely over the next 7 days. Temperatures will trend warmer over the next few days as a surface high pressure shifts across the region. Return flow will set up by Wednesday ahead of our next rain making storm system on Thursday. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 242 PM CST Mon Feb 19 2024 A ridge of high pressure will bring dry and warmer temperatures to the Mid-South through mid-week. Temperatures by Wednesday will rise into the 60s to lower 70s. A weak cold front will bring a chance for showers and thunderstorms to the area for Thursday into Thursday night. A return of drier air and warm temperatures is expected to return for next weekend. && .DISCUSSION... (This evening through next Sunday) Issued at 242 PM CST Mon Feb 19 2024 GOES-16 Satellite trends this afternoon show a shortwave ridge over the Mississippi Valley, a weak mid-level shortwave trough over the Central Plains, and an amplified upper-level ridge over the Rockies. Surface dewpoints in the teens combined with early afternoon temperatures in the 50s are producing relative humidity values ranging from 20 to 30 percent. The aforementioned shortwave trough will move across the Middle Mississippi Valley tonight. Short-term and HREF Grand Ensemble model soundings indicate a substantial amount of low-level dry air will remain present resulting in a continuation of rain-free conditions across the Mid-South. The upper-level ridge is expected to build into the region through mid-week with temperatures rising into the 60s to lower 70s by Wednesday. Mid to long range models continue to show a southern stream mid- level shortwave trough phasing with a northern stream trough over the Mississippi Valley late this week and pushing a cold front through the area Thursday into Thursday night. Severe weather is not anticipated at this time as Long Range Ensemble Forecast and deterministic model solutions indicate instability will remain sub-par across the area. Forecast QPF values are forecast to range around two-tenths of an inch. Northwest flow will prevail behind the front briefly before an upper-level ridge builds into the region for the weekend with temperatures approaching 70 degrees again. Rain chances will return early next week as southwest upper-level flow spreads back into the area. CJC && .AVIATION...
