.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds in behind an arctic cold front for today.
Coastal low pressure looks to bring some wintry weather to the
region tonight into early Tuesday. Arctic high pressure builds in
Tuesday night and holds influence over the region for Wednesday and
Thursday. Another coastal low pressure system may impact the region
Thursday night through Friday night. Arctic high pressure then
builds in again for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Radar showing some light returns over the area, however,
conditions are quite dry at the surface, so any snow that is
falling is drying up before reaching the ground. Forecast mostly
on track otherwise, so will make some adjustments based on the
latest surface obs.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the entire CWA
with the exception of Sussex County DE, Cape May County NJ, and
coastal Atlantic County NJ. Coastal low pressure will develop
over and just offshore of the southeastern CONUS today and
tonight and move northeastwards with time. This coastal low
pressure will bring a modest snow event to much of the region
tonight into Tuesday.
The forecast has not really changed much in terms of expected
snowfall. A widespread 2-4 inches is expected across the region.
The I-95 corridor and areas northwest of it will likely see
between 2-4 inches of snow while areas southeast of the corridor
see closer to 1-3 inches. Areas in very southern Delmarva
(i.e., southern Sussex County DE) will likely see 1 inch or less
of snow.
Snow is still the dominate ptype expected, though it should be
mentioned that more recent mesoscale/CAM guidance is indicating
a bit of a warmer layer aloft developing for later during the
event (early Tuesday morning hours). This is a bit concerning
and will be watched carefully going forward. This situation
means that snow may change over to a period of sleet/freezing
rain or wintry mix early Tuesday morning before the event
concludes. Guidance suggests the I-95 corridor and areas
southeast of the corridor will have the best chance of seeing
this occur.
The trend among the models continues to be a speeding up of the
event occurrence. Precipitation will begin to taper off over
Delmarva around 5-7AM Tuesday. Precipitation will last longer
the more north and east you go. Our northeastern most areas in
NJ will likely see precipitation cease entirely by 1-2PM
Tuesday. It would not be surprising if this trend continues
such that the entire areas is done seeing precipitation at or
before noon Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Coastal low pressure to our northeast Tuesday night will continue to
move northeastwards away from the region. As this occurs, surface
high pressure centered to our southwest will move eastwards with
time. By the time frame of Wednesday night, this high pressure will
look to be centered over the eastern CONUS.
Overall, the region will see cold high pressure influence us for the
short term. Cold and dry conditions can be expected. No PoPs are
included in the forecast. Decreasing cloud cover Tuesday night will
give way to mainly clear skies for Wednesday. Lows in the teens can
be expected throughout the region Tuesday night; only slightly
warmer overnight lows will be seen Wednesday night. Across the
region, highs in the 20s are expected Wednesday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A cold and active weather pattern will continue into the long term
period as the eastern U.S. remains under the influence of a broad
long wave trough. To start the period Thursday, high pressure will
be moving out to sea to our south and east while a warm front moves
into the area near the Mason-Dixon line extending south and west
towards Tennessee. This will help bring the area mainly cloudy skies
with even a bit of light snow or flurries possible, mainly over
eastern PA as an initial weak disturbance approaches along the
front. Temperatures will moderate compared to Wednesday but still be
below average with highs mostly in the low to mid 30s except upper
30s to near 40 over southern parts of our Delmarva zones and the NJ
coast and 20s over the souther Poconos.
The period Thursday night through Friday still looks to be the most
challenging portion of the long term forecast as a series of
impulses continue to rotate around the base of the long wave trough
leading to the development of a coastal storm system developing to
our south and then moving off the coast. While this still has the
potential to bring the area a more significant snowfall event, there
is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast at this time. Generally
speaking though, forecast guidance looks to take the low fairly far
off the coast to our south and east as an initial wave moves through
while hanging back a surface trough towards the coast as a norlun
trough type set up. Convergence and precip may then be enhanced
along this feature as the main vort max aloft swings around. This is
a notoriously difficult situation for forecast models to resolve as
it can sometimes result in a relatively small/narrow areas of
heavier snowfall within a broader area of much lighter snow. Given
that this system is still several days out, we kept the forecast
close to the NBM (National Blend of Models) which brings in likely
POPs around 60 percent for Friday for the majority of the forecast
area (save for the southern Poconos). With the track of the system
off the coast and winds staying mainly N/NE we are confident any
precip should be mainly snow across the area except right near the
coast where some rain could mix in. As mentioned though, lot of
uncertainly on amounts. Expect highs Friday mainly in the upper 20s
to low 30s, except mid 30s near the coast and southern Delmarva and
low/mid 20s over the southern Poconos.
Beyond Friday the big story going into next weekend looks to be the
very cold temperatures and wind making for bitter conditions! Friday
night into early Saturday snow comes to an end as the low moves away
to the north and east while deepening. In its wake, the next arctic
front plunges southward across the area Friday night as a strong
high builds into the central CONUS. The gradient between this high
and the low to our north and east looks to bring strong winds and
associated strong cold advection into next Saturday. In fact,
forecast models are indicating 850 mb temperatures getting down to
the -18 to -20 C range across the area. Therefore expect highs by
next Saturday will struggle to get beyond the low to mid 20s for
much of the area and with NW winds 15 to 25 mph this will result in
wind chills in the single digits and teens even during the warmest
part of the day with subzero wind chills possible at night. By next
Sunday there should be at least some moderation in temperatures with
lighter winds although it will likely still be around 10 degrees or
so below average.

.AVIATION /16Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...
Today...Mainly VFR through most of the day although clouds will
be lowering and thickening. By the late afternoon (21-23z) a
little light snow is likely to be developing from south to north
from MIV and ACY north through ILG/PHL/PNE with visbys dropping
fairly quickly to MVFR following the onset of snow. Winds
mainly west around 5 knots. Moderate confidence.
Tonight...Snow overspreading remaining TAF sites through the
evening with all sites dropping to IFR visbys within 2 hours of
the snow's onset. Expect a change to a wintry mix at ACY and MIV
and then possibly reaching as far north as the I-95 TAF sites
by late night. Winds east/northeast around 5 knots. Moderate
confidence overall except low confidence on details.
Outlook...
Tuesday...IFR to start the day as there will still likely be some
light snow and mixed precip around, especially around and north of
the I-95 TAF sites. It looks to move out through the day though with
improvement to VFR through the afternoon. Northeast winds 5 to 10
knots backing to northwest around 10 knots by the afternoon.
Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. Winds westerly 10-20 kts with gusts up to 25 kts.
High confidence.
Thursday...Mainly VFR. Winds generally westerly around 10 kts.
