.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of Today)
Issued at 949 AM CDT Wed Apr 3 2024
What a difference a day makes. Despite plenty of sunshine, temperatures
are currently in the upper 40s to lower 50s, around 20 degrees
cooler than this time yesterday. Highs will only reach the upper
50s to lower 60s today. The cold front that brought the active
weather yesterday is off to our east and moving into the Mid
Atlantic but the sfc low is still up in the Great Lakes.
Disturbances will round that trough and bring us a low chance of
showers this afternoon along with an increase in cloud cover. Best
chance for rain will be north of the TN River. The northwesterly
winds will be breezy today, but remain below Wind Advisory
criteria. They will be sustained 15-20 mph with gusts up to 35
mph. Lowered POPs and increased Sky grids, otherwise the forecast
is on track for today.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Friday night)
Issued at 443 AM CDT Wed Apr 3 2024
The upper low to our NNW (discussed above) is predicted to
broaden and weaken over the course of the short term period as it
ejects northeastward into coastal portions of New England by
Friday night. However, weak lift associated with several smaller
scale disturbances embedded within the broader cyclone may
contribute to the development of low clouds and light showers at
times from tonight through Thursday night, and this will be
especially true during the daylight hours when at least minor
amounts of CAPE will be available beneath a sharp inversion aloft.
Based on the position of the primary mid/upper-level cyclone, we
have placed our highest POPs across the northeastern corner of the
CWFA, which is where it would not be surprising to see a few
snowflakes mix with any showers that occur during the early
morning hours Thursday or Friday (when surface temps will be in
the mid 30s). Due to potential impacts from both stratus clouds
and wind, the risk for frost development appears rather low both
tonight and Thursday night, even with air temps in the 35-40F
range. Aside from a potential increase in high clouds, conditions
should be most favorable for frost formation on Friday night, with
calm winds and temps in the mid 30s/dewpoints in the lower 30s.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday through Tuesday)
Issued at 443 AM CDT Wed Apr 3 2024
Latest extended range model consensus suggests that an amplified
mid-level ridge (between the departing upper low to our northeast
and a pair of upper lows across the western CONUS) will translate
eastward across the MS Valley on Saturday/Saturday night. This
will provide a period of mostly clear skies and dry conditions,
with highs warming back into the l-m 60s Saturday afternoon.
High-level clouds will quickly spread back across the TN Valley
on Saturday night, downstream from a meridional axis of convection
in the vicinity of a dryline across the southern Plains.
Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur east of
the dryline and within a developing warm conveyor belt (related to
an upper low shifting eastward from the northern High Plains),
and some of this activity may survive as far east as our CWFA
(particularly Sunday night/Monday morning). Wind profiles would
normally favor organized convection, but light SSE return flow
will hinder the progress of northward moisture transport (although
a narrow corridor of maritime tropical air may attempt to reach
reach locations to our immediate west ahead of this system).
Chances for showers and perhaps some elevated thunderstorms will
begin to increase at some point Monday night or Tuesday, with this
activity occurring along the cool side of a warm front lifting
slowly northward over the central Gulf Coast. Highs will return to
the lower 70s by Sunday, with lows Monday morning returning to
the mid 50s.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 646 AM CDT Wed Apr 3 2024
Postfrontal stratus clouds will continue to provide VFR cigs of
3.5-5 kft at the HSV/MSL terminals early in the period, along
with a WNW wind arnd 10 kts. Later this morning, the cloud bases
will begin to rise, but will remain intact for much of the
aftn/evening as an upper air disturbance tracks across the Upper
TN Valley. This feature will be responsible for generating
scattered-numerous SHRA, which will spread southeastward,
potentially impacting the terminals btwn 19-23Z. Sfc winds will
back to W later this morning and increase to 12G28 knots before
subsiding late this evening.
