Warm temperatures were in place across all of Middle Tennessee to start 2023 which only helped to set the stage for an early January severe weather event. As a storm system tracked across the Rockies and Great Plains, moist southerly flow ahead of its cold front brought multiple rounds of thunderstorms to Middle Tennessee beginning on January 2, 2023 and lasting into the early morning hours of January 4th. There were three distinct rounds of thunderstorms associated with this event. The first happened during the evening hours of January 2nd, but these were non-severe. The severe weather threat increased by the early morning hours of January 3rd as a more organized line of thunderstorms approached the Tennessee River. As this line marched eastward through the day, it produced strong winds with several reports of straight-line wind damage received. The third and final round of thunderstorms approached from the south late on January 3rd and into the early morning hours of January 4th. One particular thunderstorm with this round produced large hail near Hohenwald.

A tspotter reported a destroyed shed in Cumberland Furnace along Soules Chapel Road due to strong winds from a thunderstorm. Damages are estimated for the loss of the shed.
Strong thunderstorm winds destroyed a shed at a residence near Unionville. Damages are estimated for the loss of the shed.
A tspotter reported damage from strong thunderstorm winds near Fosterville. Most of the damage was downed trees, but a roof was also torn off of a hay shed near the intersection of Bell Buckle Road and Fosterville Road. Damages are a rough estimate.
A severe thunderstorm tracking eastward through Cumberland County produced straight-line wind damage just north of Crossville. The emergency manager reported damage on Tabor Loop which included an uprooted tree, another tree that fell on a house, a damaged carport and garage, metal roofing torn off a barn, and shingle damage to another residence. Damages are a rough estimate.
A CoCoRaHS observer southeast of Hohenwald reported quarter size hail with a severe thunderstorm.
Quarter size hail was reported along Buffalo Road south of Hohenwald from a severe thunderstorm.
Penny size hail was reported from a severe thunderstorm southeast of Hohenwald.
