A strong upper level low pressure system migrated out of the Four Corners Region and into Northcentral Texas on January 23rd-24th, inducing strong surface low development along the middle and upper Texas coast on the 24th. Cold, much below normal temperatures were observed areawide on the 24th as areas of showers and embedded storms developed and became widespread ahead of the low, although colder temperatures on the backside of the low allowed for a transition from rain to snow across Northern McCurtain County Oklahoma. In fact, temperatures were able to fall to near or slightly below freezing across this area, allowing for snow accumulations to occur on elevated and grassy surfaces, as well as some roadways. Widespread snowfall amounts of 1.0-1.5 inches, with isolated higher amounts, fell across Northern McCurtain County, before the upper low and associated wrap-around snow departed the region into Western and Central Arkansas during the early morning hours of the 25th.
The following are some snowfall totals that were measured across Northern McCurtain County during this event:
Battiest, 1.8 inches; 4SSE Bethel, 1.0 inches; Smithville, 1.0 inches.
