.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will slide southward across our region later
tonight into Saturday. High pressure builds in from the north Sunday
into Monday, then another cold front arrives Monday night into
Tuesday. High pressure then builds south across Ontario into the
Great Lakes region through mid to late week while low pressure
lingers over eastern New England into the Canadian Maritimes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms have begun to
initiate, mainly northwest of the I-95 corridor. These will
continue to push into New Jersey and Pennsylvania through this
afternoon and evening with some gusty winds possible.
Thunderstorms will become more isolated through the overnight
hours though isolated to scattered showers will remain possible
through Saturday morning.

Ridging will gradually retreat out of the region ahead of a
positively tilted trough. This trough will approach the region
overnight with the axis of the trough then likely passing
through the region later in the day on Saturday. Meanwhile, a
broad area of low pressure will remain across the western
Atlantic.

For this afternoon and evening, mixed layer instability will
remain in the 500-1,000 J/kg range into this afternoon. This
combined with no capping and terrain to force convection is
expected to result in continued isolated to scattered showers
and thunderstorms developing. The activity should continue to
remain confined mainly to near and northwest of I-95 during the
afternoon and early evening. Given the very deep mixed boundary
layer (mixing as high as 700 mb) and thus dry airmass, DCAPE
will be quite high (current mesoanalysis suggests 1000-1500
J/kg). This means the showers and storms will be capable of
producing gusty winds thanks to the added evaporation in the
downdrafts. A few gusts up to 30-35 mph have already been
observed at automated weather stations. A rogue damaging wind
gust is possible, however severe thunderstorms are not expected
at this time. Shear is very low (10 kts or less), so convection
will be pulsy and transient in nature, not organized or long
lived. Small hail cannot be completely ruled out, although a
freezing height near 13kft and the hot surface temperatures
should melt any hail before reaching the ground.

A wildfire in southeast Burlington County, which began Wednesday
afternoon, may continue to result in smokey and hazy conditions
downstream across portions of southern New Jersey. As of 3 PM
Friday, the fire was 50% contained. Additional spread of smoke
from this fire to areas surrounding southeast Burlington County
remains possible as well.

For tonight, isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms
will linger into the overnight ahead of an approaching backdoor cold
front. As instability decreases with the loss of diurnal
heating, thunderstorms will become more even more isolated
overnight. However, the front should also allow for more
showers to develop farther east and south. Little in the way of
impacts are expected overnight with this activity. Winds will
become initially light and variable overnight, although winds
will shift northeast and increase as the front approaches.
Expect mostly cloudy conditions overnight with some low clouds
possibly streaming in as well, particularly along the coast.
Lows will be within a few degrees of 60.

By Saturday morning, the backdoor cold front will begin to push
through the region. This will gradually bring an end to the
remaining isolated to scattered showers. Behind the front,
northeasterly winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts
around 20 to 25 mph. Gusts around 30 to 35 mph are possible
along the immediate coastal areas with the lower surface
friction over the water allowing faster wind speeds. Clouds will
gradually begin to dissipate behind the front, though may linger
longer closer to the coast with greater low level moisture in
the marine layer. High temperatures may make it into the low to
mid 70s west of the I-95 urban corridor with some help from
clear skies. East of I-95 highs will likely top out in the upper
60s to near 70 as a result of the lingering clouds and cooler
air in the marine layer off the still relatively cool ocean
waters.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The upper level pattern becomes decidedly more "troughy" over
eastern Canada and the NE US states for the short term as a
sharp upper level trough located over eastern New England closes
off into an upper level low Saturday night through Sunday. This
upper level low will then gradually drift off to the east
through Monday. Meanwhile, a second upper level low will move
southward across Quebec towards the base of long wave trough. At
the surface, high pressure noses southward into the region
Saturday night through Sunday and then slowly weakens Monday as
the next cold front approaches from the north.

In terms of sensible weather, the surface high dominating over the
area will keep conditions mainly dry through the short term period
with skies mainly clear to at times variably cloudy. Northerly winds
will keep it chilly with lows Saturday night mainly in the 40s to
low 50s. Highs Sunday will be mainly in the low to mid 70 except 60s
over the southern Poconos and along the coast where winds will turn
more onshore by Sunday afternoon.

Little change expected for Sunday night with lows again in the
40s to low 50s under mainly clear skies with light winds. Monday
will be a bit warmer though with highs mostly in the upper 70s
to around 80 with west to northwest winds around 10 mph. Right
near the immediate coast it will be several degrees cooler
though with winds turning more southerly.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
For the long term period, the overall weather pattern in the east
remains "troughy" as the next upper level continues to pivot
southward Monday night into Tuesday. The next surface cold front
will also move southward through the area during this time. The two
upper level lows may then merge into one broad upper level low or
trough generally centered near the northeastern U.S. states into the
Canadian Maritimes. There are some differences though in the models
regarding how exactly this plays out but that's broadly what's
expected looking at the big picture. This set up should keep
temperatures near to a bit below average for this time of year. In
terms of precip, most days will have chances for some scattered
showers and storms around (POPs generally 25 to 35 percent) under a
mix of sun and clouds due to the proximity of the upper level low
with timing favoring the afternoon and early evening hours due to
diurnal heating. That said, it still doesn't look like any day will
feature a widespread soaking of appreciable rain as the core of the
precip will most likely be over New England into the Canadian
Maritimes closer to where the upper low is and on its eastern
side.

.AVIATION /22Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Remainder of Today...Mainly VFR expected. Lingering haze and
smoke from the southern New Jersey wildfire may impact MIV/ACY
today, although we are not currently forecasting any visibility
restrictions at this time from this activity. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms have begun to develop, mainly northwest of
the I-95 terminals. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are
expected to continue to develop near and northwest of the I-95
terminals. The chance of a shower impacting a terminal is low,
but if one does, brief MVFR visibility may result along with
brief wind gusts near 40 kts possible. Winds generally 5-10 kts.
Wind direction will tend to be variable at times, although it
should favor a north to northeast direction. The exception will
be at PHL, ILG, MIV, and ACY where winds will be more south to
southeast.

Tonight...Mainly VFR with isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms. MVFR to IFR ceilings may develop after 09Z, but
there is low confidence on this. IFR conditions most likely
closer to the coast at KMIV/KACY. Light and variable wind early
will shift northeast and increase to 5-10 kts after 09Z.
Moderate confidence.

Saturday...A period of MVFR/IFR ceilings possible in the
morning with some showers. Ceilings gradually improving to VFR
through the afternoon. Northeast winds 10-15 knots with gusts
20-25 knots. Low confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday night...Mainly VFR except potential for MVFR cigs at MIV
and ACY. East to northeast winds 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...VFR. North to northeast winds around 10 knots becoming
easterly in the afternoon for MIV and ACY. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Mainly VFR. Northwest winds around 10 knots becoming
south/southwest in the afternoon at ACY. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday through Wednesday...Mainly VFR except chances for afternoon
/ early evening showers/storms which could bring brief restrictions.
NW winds around 10 knots. Low confidence.

.MARINE...
No marine headlines are anticipated through tonight. Winds will be
from the south to southeast around 10-15 kts through the evening
then become lighter tonight and shift to the northeast. Seas
1-3 feet with a wind driven easterly swell. Some isolated
showers or thunderstorms are possible overnight.

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Saturday. SCA
conditions develop Saturday morning from north to south as winds
increase with gusts up to 30 knots. There still remains
potential for a few 35 knots gusts Saturday afternoon and
evening. Seas build to 6-8 feet on the Atlantic coastal waters.

Outlook...

Saturday night through Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions
expected to persist through Sunday for our ocean zones but mainly
due to seas. Seas gradually lowering by late day.

Monday through Wednesday...Marginal SCA conditions could persist
into early Monday over our ocean zones due to seas but otherwise sub
SCA conditions expected.

Rip currents...

Today...There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip
currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches. A light and
variable wind in the morning becomes southeast to south around 10
mph in the afternoon. Breaking waves of around 2 feet are expected
with a medium period easterly swell.

Saturday...There is at least a MODERATE risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches.
Northeast winds 15-25 mph with gusts 30-35 mph are expected.
Breaking waves will be 3 to 4 feet with a medium period
east/northeasterly swell.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A gusty northeast wind is expected on Saturday in the wake of a
strong cold front. The onshore flow in combination with the high
astronomical tides associated with the full moon on Saturday will
result in minor coastal flooding along the New Jersey and Delaware
coasts, the tidal Delaware River, and the Delaware Bay with the
Saturday night high tide. A Coastal Flood Advisory has been
issued for these areas. There is the potential for some spots
to touch moderate flooding, primarily Cape May, NJ and Sussex,
DE. Confidence has increased some in reaching moderate stage, so
a Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for these zones and
trends will be monitored through the overnight hours.

Minor coastal flooding is possible during the Sunday night high tide
as well, though confidence is much lower on this occurrence.

Coastal flooding is not expected along our portion of the Marylands
Eastern Shore.
