.SYNOPSIS...
Clear skies, blustery winds and a bone-chilling cold will occur
overnight in the wake of Arctic front. High pressure moves
overhead on Saturday, moving offshore Saturday night, ahead of a
weak frontal passage on Sunday night into Monday. Temperatures
will gradually be on the incline as a couple of low pressure
systems affect the region mid to late week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Arctic high pressure centered over the Great Lakes and the Ohio
River Valley this evening will dominate the Near Term period.
The main story will be the cold. 850 mb temperatures will be as
low as -20C in Delmarva to -30C in the southern Poconos and far
northern New Jersey. This yields surface temperatures as low as
-5F in the southern Poconos and northern New Jersey, in the
single digits for most of southeast Pennsylvania and the rest of
New Jersey, and to around 10 in Delmarva. A tight northwesterly
pressure gradient will remain over the area between high
pressure building in from the west and low pressure over eastern
Canada through much of the overnight. Wind chill values will be
as low as -25 in the southern Poconos and northern New Jersey,
where a Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect. Wind chill values
will otherwise range from -5 to -15.
Skies will clear overnight, and then some clouds return
Saturday afternoon as high pressure moves off the Mid- Atlantic
coast late in the day. A cold day Saturday with highs in the
teens up north, and otherwise in the mid and upper 20s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Surface high pressure will shift offshore Saturday night and a
tighter pressure gradient will form overhead. Winds shift to the
southwest and increase to around 15 to 20 mph. As a result,
warmer air will begin to be advected back into the region
starting Saturday night. Helped by increasing clouds stemming
radiational cooling overnight, some locations may even have
their warmest temperatures on Saturday well after dark due to
the warmer air rushing in. By Sunday, above normal temperatures
will have returned to the region with high temperatures in the
upper 40s to low 50s for most of the region with low 40s in the
Poconos. Sunday night we will see a mid level trough begin to
dig across the Great Lakes, bringing with it a weak cold front
and churning up a coastal storm off the Southeastern US
coastline in the process. Guidance currently shows the storm
system remaining too far south for any notable impacts to the
region, but the northern fringe of the precip shield could reach
the southern tip of Delaware and South Jersey. At the moment,
put a low- end slight chance for this area to see a light rain
shower overnight, but any precip amounts will be minimal.
Otherwise another quiet and dry night for most with lows
remaining on the mild side in the low to mid 30s. Come Monday,
high pressure returns with dry weather and clearing skies. Highs
back in the upper 40s to low 50s and upper 30s across the
Poconos.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The long term period starts off dry and with temps a few
degrees above normal, before a significant warm-up is expected
by the end of the week under a rather unsettled weather pattern.
Upper level ridge and surface high pressure move overhead
Monday night under generally clear skies and light winds. This
may be the coolest our temperatures get throughout the extended
period as warm air advects northward again on Tuesday with
surface high shifting off the coast and winds become more
southerly. Expect lows in the mid 20s to low 30s Monday night,
with afternoon highs surging into the 50s for the coastal plain
and 40s north and west of there.
We will start to see the effects of the next upper trough
moving into the area Tuesday night into Wednesday with initial
surface low tracking into eastern Canada. Most of the major
deterministic guidance tends to stall an associated boundary to
our west on Wednesday with surface high pressure remaining
situated in the vicinity of Bermuda. This will allow warm air to
pump northward. Signals of a surface low developing along this
stalled boundary are apparent, with the potential of this low
tracking in our vicinity Thursday into Friday. With the long
term forecast being quite uncertain and of lower confidence due
to several differences in regards to timing, this forecast
package generally lies in consensus with guidance from NBM.
Thus, a general chance of PoPs have been included beginning
Wednesday night through the Friday period. Temperatures will be
well above normal - generally in the 50s for all, with 60s in
the realm of possibility late in the week thanks to high
pressure stationed near Bermuda.

where a Gale Warning remains in effect for gusts 35 to 40 kt.
Strong SCA conditions otherwise overnight, though occasional
gusts to 35 kt possible in Lower DE Bay and the mouth of the Bay
into the DE ocean waters.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The strong northwest flow is resulting in lowering water levels
on the tidal Delaware River. The levels are expected to be
particularly low along the stretch of the river between New
Castle County, Delaware and Salem County, New Jersey with the
early morning low tide on Saturday. We have issued a Special
Weather Statement for that area for the potential for water
levels reaching 2 to 3 feet below Mean Lower Low Water. We will
keep a close eye on trends overnight and may need to expand the
area covered by the statement a bit farther up river.
The northwest wind is forecast to diminish on Saturday morning
and water levels should recover slowly on Saturday afternoon and
Saturday night.

A strong northwest wind will cause low water levels on the lower tidal Delaware River and its tributaries early on Saturday. The low water levels may cause navigation problems around the time of low tide. Water levels are expected to drop between 2 and 3 feet below Mean Lower Low Water from around the Commodore Barry Bridge area to the far upper part of Delaware Bay. Low tide occurs at Reedy Point, Delaware at 4:16 AM Saturday.
