.SYNOPSIS...
Broad low pressure will slowly drift north and east across southern
New England tonight. Unseasonable warmth and periods of showers and
thunderstorms will continue into Sunday night ahead of an
approaching cold front. Cooler, drier, and breezy conditions will
then prevail in the wake of the cold front Monday through Wednesday
as high pressure settles to the south of the region. Another frontal
system may impact the area Friday or Saturday with increasing
temperatures later in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Our previous discussion quoting "you'll always find a surprise under
a closed low" has certainly materialized. Radar imagery this
afternoon showing numerous showers and thunderstorms popping up
across the region with multiple reports of small hail and frequent
lightning. Storm motion on these cells has also been slow as
expected, allowing for heavy downpours to train over the same
location for a prolonged period of time. Localized urban flooding
continues to be a concern this afternoon and through the evening
hours until these storms diminish and the broad low departs north
and east.
Tonight, showers and storms dwindle as we lose instability and the
closed low passes northeastward away from us. However, the low level
moisture remains, so expect widespread low clouds and possibly some
dense fog. Lows in the 50s to near 60...coolest again near the coast.
For Sunday, some overnight fog and low stratus will gradually clear
out through mid to late morning as subsidence from a weak upper
level ridge arrives to provide a brief reprieve during the day.
Breaks in the clouds across southern parts of the region and
persistent S to SW flow will keep inland areas warm in the mid 70s
to around 80. Further north across the Lehigh Valley, Poconos, and
NW New Jersey, clouds are expected to linger through the day,
keeping highs limited (but still mild) in the upper 60s to low 70s.
W ith SE flow across the coastal areas, high temps there will only
reach the mid 60s.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A cold front extending southeastward from surface low pressure
undergoing cyclolysis across the Great Lakes will approach Sunday
night and cross the area overnight. Widely scattered showers and a
few thunderstorms associated with the front should be already in
progress upstream as it approaches during the evening. The general
trend timing-wise for the frontal passage is still trending toward a
faster solution, putting rain/thunder chances into our area shortly
after midnight Sunday night. The faster solution would have the dry
slot moving into the area by daybreak Monday morning with a nearly
completely dry daytime period Monday which seems most likely. The
showers and any thunderstorms will be benign, providing some needed
rainfall to some areas. Low temperatures will be in the 50s areawide.
For Monday, breezy southwest winds will develop behind the front
with temperatures rising into the mid 60s to near 70 degrees across
the coastal plains. Skies should clear across the coastal plains,
although cooling at the mid-levels and increased surface moisture
should keep skies mostly cloudy northwest of I-95. A few afternoon
showers could develop in this region as well.
Westerly winds will prevail around 10-20 mph Monday night with
temperatures falling into the 40s and skies gradually clearing. A
few light showers are possible across our far western zones, but
with dry air building, coverage should be scattered at best.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The closed mid-level low will lift northeast and away from the area
Wednesday as ridging briefly returns. Heights will rise through the
day on Wednesday and surface high pressure will continue building to
our south before sliding offshore. A cooler and drier airmass will
be in place behind the departing system with a good deal of sun
along with breezy west to northwest winds. Winds will relax some on
Wednesday compared to Tuesday with gusts in the 20-25 mph.
Both Tuesday and Wednesday night will be chilly with lows ranging
from the mid 30s north to mid 40s south. With a pressure gradient in
place, induced winds should preclude any widespread frost formation
across the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey despite
temperatures in the mid 30s.
Temperatures will begin to rebound considerably by Thursday and
Friday as upper ridging shifts offshore and the surface high shift
the winds back to the south and southwest. Highs Thursday will be
well into the 70s with lows back into the 50s. Another trough and
cold front will approach the region Friday or Saturday as a low
slides through the Great Lakes. As it does so, flow will remain
southerly and drive temperatures likely into the upper 70s if not
low 80s as highs for Friday. Deterministic guidance is still
spread on exact timing of the frontal passage, but the first
half of next weekend could be unsettled with showers around
Friday into Saturday.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...
Rest of this afternoon...Storms continue to develop across the
forecast area this afternoon with lightning and heavy downpours.
Storm coverage is expected to continue filling in throughout the
afternoon. While heavy rainfall is not expected to become widespread
per say, large clusters of thunderstorms could potentially train
over the same location for an extended period of time, leading to
prolonged sub-VFR conditions. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to
determine where these storms will set up and begin to train, but the
terminals at greatest risk continue to be along the I-95 corridor
and west, so placed those locations under a TEMPO TSRA group for the
afternoon. ACY could also see heavy rain, but may be delayed for a
few hours until the late afternoon.
Tonight...After the storms fizzle out late this evening, light S to
SE flow tonight will help advect dense marine fog and low stratus
inland across much of the coastal plains. IFR conditions likely with
LIFR conditions possible. Further inland, including the I-95
corridor, low level moisture enhanced from this afternoon's rain
will aide in fog and low stratus development overnight as well. IFR
conditions possible. Vis and cig restrictions will begin to lift
Sunday morning, but only slowly. Some locations could see low
ceilings hang on through late morning.
Outlook...
Sunday through Sunday night...Any restrictions early in the day
should improve to VFR by 18Z or so. MVFR to IFR conditions will
develop again after 00Z as showers and a few thunderstorms
spread into the area. Winds settling out of the south to
southeast around 5-10 kts by 18Z. LLWS possible. Moderate
confidence.
Monday through Monday night...Possible sub-VFR conditions in the
morning with rain showers/lingering cloud cover improving to VFR in
the afternoon. A few showers possible mainly at RDG/ABE up to ~18z.
Southwesterly winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots. Moderate
confidence.
Tuesday...VFR. Westerly winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots.
High confidence.
Wednesday...Northwesterly winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots.
