Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 413 AM PDT Fri Sep 1 2023 .SYNOPSIS...An evolving troughing pattern brings more active weather as we head into the weekend. Strong, gusty winds lead to blowing dust and hazy skies while showers spread through the forecast area, delivering anywhere from half of an inch to almost 2 inches of rainfall over the next three days. && .SHORT TERM...Today through early Sunday morning Today sees even gustier winds across the forecast area as troughing continues to deepen down the coast of California. Strongest winds where there is a Wind Advisory in effect beginning at 10 AM range from 20 to almost 35+ mph with gusts approaching 45+ mph at times. The southerly direction of these winds is raising concerns for crosswinds along roadways that run east-to- west such as portions of U.S. 6 near Tonopah, US 50 near Eureka and Austin, and I 80 in northern Lander and Eureka counties. Use caution when driving, especially if driving high profile vehicles. Winds may also blow dust at times, temporarily reducing visibility on roadways. Some light showers have already started in portions of Humboldt County, but as the day goes on we'll see showers spread through the CWA. High PWAT values in portions of central and eastern Nevada are leading to rainfall totals for today anywhere from 0.2" to almost 1" with totals in the higher end of that range in higher elevations of northern Nye, White Pine, and southern Eureka Counties. Afternoon highs feel much cooler today mainly in the 70s and low 80s. Winds trend lighter, but still breezy, overnight tonight and overnight lows drop into the 40s and mid 50s. Saturday sees a very similar picture, except winds will be less gusty and the axis of higher rainfall totals shifts to northeastern Nevada. Regardless, virtually all of our counties see showers and thunderstorms to some extent, Afternoon highs remain in the 70s .LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday The upper level low over northern CA will weaken into a trough early Sunday, and over the course of Sunday and Sunday night that trough energy will pass east across Nevada. Showers and thunderstorms are expected across most of the CWA on Sunday. Rain amounts will be heaviest over and near Elko county, where QPF amounts ranging from 0.10 - 1.0" are expected. Most valley locations in Elko county can expect a quarter to a third of an inch Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening. Higher rain amounts are expected over the mountain areas. Winds will also be gusty on Sunday across most of central NV as well as the eastern half of Elko county, with southerly winds of 10-mph gusting 35-40mph in these areas. Near-zonal flow sets up across northern and central NV Monday and Tuesday, though there will be a piece of shortwave energy moving through the CWA on Tuesday, which will bring some increased clouds to areas north of the Highway 50 corridor. At this time no thunderstorms are in the forecast Tuesday, though there is 5-15% chance of thunderstorms from Highway 50 north to the Idaho state line from late Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. Temperatures begin to trend warmer on Tuesday. Wednesday as the shortwave exits east into Utah, southwesterly flow will set up across NV. There is a 15-25% chance of showers and thunderstorm over mainly just NE Elko county Wednesday afternoon and evening, though any rain amounts would be very light, possibly only virga. Thursday will be a near identical repeat of Wednesdays weather, with any isolated showers and thunderstorms limited to NE Elko county, roughly north of I80 and east of US Route 93. && AVIATION...VFR conditions will be the primary flight conditions for all terminals thru Friday night. However, weather will be active. Strong south/southwesterly winds will be in place across the region with the strongest winds located at KELY and KTPH today. Gusts 35-40kts are expected. Winds will produce localized BLDU, again, with the biggest threat at KELY and KTPH. Instances of BLDU that move on terminal could briefly reduce VIS to MVFR or even IFR conditions. Also, VCTS will be present at KELY and KEKO this afternoon and evening. Brief periods of moderate or heavy rain and lowered CIGS associated with any TS that move on terminal could briefly reduce flight conditions to MVFR or IFR. VCSH will be present at KTPH and KBAM later in the afternoon. Active weather persists into at least the first half of the overnight. && .FIRE WEATHER...Strong, gusty winds again today. Some light showers have already started in portions of zones 434 and 427, but coverage increases and some thunderstorms mix in during the afternoon. This active weather continues over the next few days, but the ample moisture should help mitigate any fire weather concerns. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories... Station (TMBN2) Timber Mountain Raws, Elevation 9000 feet.
A thunderstorm produced very strong winds that caused a tree to fall on a deck. Approximate diameter of the tree is 18 inches. The house was not damaged. Wind gusts were estimated at 60-70 mph. A nearby Mesonet station (WLSNV) 2.3 E Wells reported a wind gust of 81 mph at the time of the tree damage. Station Elevation is 5845 feet.

Storms training over the same area led to areal flooding over SR-305 in Lander County. The road was temporarily closed between MM 60 to MM 40.

Public reported hail and heavy rain in Battle Mountain. Power also was out at time of report.

Flooding of all lanes occurred at East 4th street in Winnemucca near the intersection of Reinhardt street. This resulted from continuous heavy rain. Road remains closed as of 13:00 LT 9/4/23.
Station (AS326) Coal Mine Canyon, Elevation 5549 feet. High sustained wind was a result of a thunderstorm moving through the area.
Station (WSPNV) 6 S Clover Valley, Elevation 5794 feet.
Flooding caused by heavy rain closed NV-361 from Gabbs, NV south to US-95. Road has reopened 1 lane as of the same time the following day.
Station (ALLN2) Alligator Ridge Raws, Elevation 6674 feet.
All lanes have been closed on NV-722 from MM 41.51 (intersection of NV-722 with US-50 near Austin), to MM 13. Heavy Rain has caused standing water and flooding in the roadway. Road remains closed as of 13:00 LT 9/4/23.
Storm Chaser Carter Murphy posted a photo of a funnel cloud on social media time stamped at 20:50 LT. Time was then estimated to be around 18:00 LT based on radar and satellite. The location was south of US-50, along US-93.
