Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV

.SYNOPSIS...Dry and breezy conditions contribute to elevated fire
danger today and Wednesday across southern Nevada and northwest
Arizona. Dangerous to extreme heat builds later in the week, lasting
into early next week. At night, temperatures in urban areas will
struggle to fall, resulting in little-to-no relief from the heat.
During the day, all-time records may be threatened.
&&
.UPDATE...Forecast appears to be on track for today with
high temperatures a few degrees above normal, part of the warming
trend expected through the week. Winds will pick up out of the south
to southwest this afternoon. Cloud cover over Mohave County is
starting to clear out. Confidence is still low in thunderstorm
development but it cannot be ruled out.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today and Wednesday.
Warm and breezy conditions continue as southwesterly flow persists
aloft. With the building ridge pushing the jet farther north, winds
at the surface are expected to be weaker than yesterday. Gusts of 20-
30 mph will lead to elevated fire weather conditions, but not strong
enough to warrant an extension of the Red Flag Warning. There is
also a low chance of isolated convection in far eastern Mohave
County this afternoon as a subtle push of mid-level moisture comes
out of northwestern Mexico. However, latest HREF doesn't seem too
keen on this potential, especially as temperatures continue to warm
aloft, with only 2 members producing very minimal showers in the
area. As such, NBM PoPs there stand around 10%. Otherwise,
temperatures remain a few degrees above normal for mid-July. Heat
continues to slowly build on Wednesday as breezes remain elevated.
PoPs in eastern Mohave County decrease below 10%.
.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday.
An intensifying, long-duration heat wave continues to be the main
focus of the longer term period, with widespread high to extreme
heat risk anticipated. On Thursday, a fairly broad ridge of high
pressure will be anchored along the southern international border,
but will gradually build north over the weekend to anchor itself
nearly overhead with 500mb heights of near 600dm Sunday into Monday.
A ridge of this intensity climbs into the top tier of strong ridges
for the area, resulting in high confidence on a significant heat
event which will certainty break some daily records, but could also
challenge or exceed some all-time records. Needless to say, heat of
this magnitude is dangerous even for those well-accustomed to the
typical summertime heat of the Mojave Desert. We recommend everyone
do their best to minimize outdoor exposure during the upcoming heat
wave and to stay hydrated as well.
By next week, the high pressure ridge may begin to shift east
towards it's more typical Four corners location. Temperatures during
this time will likely remain well above normal, though should trend
downward from their peaks over the weekend. It's worth noting that
about 40% of the cluster guidance remains a fairly anomalous ridge
further west which could signal the heat wave may persist deeper
into next week, while the other clusters suggest a more notable
moderation. Meanwhile, the forecast remains dry while we wait for
the monsoon to show signs of life. With the ridge shifting a little
further east, monsoon moisture may not be too far behind, but we're
not seeing a strong reflection of that just in the guidance.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Dry and breezy conditions continue through Wednesday,
resulting in elevated fire danger across southern Nevada and
northwestern Arizona. Wind gusts of 20-30 mph are expected in the
afternoons, while RHs remain between 5-15%. There is a low chance
(around 10%) of isolated showers in far eastern Mohave County this
afternoon. On Wednesday, these probabilities drop below 10%. Later
in the week, we trade the breezy conditions for excessive heat.
Major to extreme HeatRisk will make any prolonged outdoor activity
dangerous. Minimum RH values decrease to 5-10% with wind gusts less
than 20 mph.
