NWS Las Vegas, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Feb 22, 9:35 PM PST, 2 hours 25 minutes earlier.
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 935 PM PST Wed Feb 22 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Winds will continue to slowly subside this evening, and scattered snow showers will dissipate after sunset. On Thursday, another round of heavy snow will affect the Spring Mountains and the higher terrain of Mohave County, with lighter amounts in Lincoln County. Another major storm system will affect the entire region Friday through Sunday. This storm will bring heavy snow to many major travel corridors, including Interstate 15 over Mountain Pass, Highway 395 through the Owens Valley, and Highway 95 between Beatty and Tonopah. && .UPDATE...Winds have largely subsided across the region tonight. Many locations across the forecast area experienced frozen precipitation this afternoon. As mentioned in the previous forecast discussion, this was due to a break in cloud cover that allowed solar heating to generate about 100 J/kg of CAPE coupled with cyclonic flow aloft. HREF indicates that there will be a similar cloud break tomorrow in the late-morning to early-afternoon, and indicates another increase of CAPE to around 100 J/kg near the same timeframe as today. With cyclonic flow persisting aloft and sub- 2000ft snow levels in the Las Vegas Valley, a repeat of snow / graupel is likely for a brief time tomorrow afternoon. No major impacts expected outside of slick roadways and distracted drivers. Southwest wind gusts will pick up tomorrow afternoon as well, though the NBMv4.1 seems to be running a tad hot... hi-resolution models including the HRRR and FV3 indicate gusts 25 to 35 mph, but an isolated gust to 40 mph cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, a couple of cold afternoon high temperature daily records broken today at Barstow-Daggett Airport and Desert Rock-Mercury Airport. Las Vegas Airport tied their previous record with a 50 degree high. Another day of unseasonably cold temperatures in store tomorrow. No updates made to the forecast this evening, as it looks to be in good shape. && .SHORT TERM...through Thursday night. After the deeper warm conveyor belt clouds cleared out of southern Nevada and southeast California, enough solar heating to generate about 100 J/kg of CAPE plus cyclonic flow aloft have fueled scattered snow showers, with snow reported even below 2000 feet thanks to dry air entrainment/evap cooling. These should weaken and dissipate after sunset as the CAPE vanishes, and plan to allow the Winter Weather Advisory to expire on schedule. Westerly winds were still cranking in much of San Bernardino County early this afternoon. Both coarse and high resolution models suggest a downward trend beginning later this afternoon, and plan to make a last minute call on whether to extend the Wind Advisory based on trends. For Thursday, high resolution models have come into better agreement showing heavy snow over the Spring Mountains and the higher terrain of Mohave County as jet streak energy currently diving down the back side of the low comes around the base and helps lift the moisture already in place. Hoisted a Winter Storm Warning for these areas. Considered Lincoln County as well, but amounts there look lighter as the better forcing should be farther south. Not much change in high temperatures expected from today to Thursday. .LONG TERM...Friday through Wednesday. Confidence is increasing in the development of a Southern California cutoff low tapping an atmospheric river leading to a favorable widespread soaking rain/heavy snow event across our forecast area Friday through Saturday night. The latest model ensembles are in fairly good agreement at slowly moving the low inland with its center tracking somewhere between Las Vegas and Yuma. These systems typically produce some of the most significant precipitation for our forecast area with this storm track as it places our area under the difluent northeast quadrant of the low. The latest storm total precipitation estimates indicate between 0.50 inches and 1.00 inches of precipitation across most of the Mojave Desert region Friday through Saturday night while amounts between 1 and 2 inches of liquid equivalent are forecast over Inyo County, central and southern Nye and the Spring Mountains. Snow levels during the event will fluctuate generally between 3500 and 5000 feet which will lead to potential heavy snow for I-15 at Mountain Pass between Baker and Primm and also impact many roads in Inyo County and in south central Nevada, the Spring Mountains and Mohave County. Keep any eye on the forecast as details become a little more clear the next couple days. Model ensembles indicate the system will pull away Sunday with decreasing chances of precipitation through Monday morning. Then the weather gets active again as another broad trough over the eastern Pacific swings inland with chances of precipitation increasing to 20- 40 percent Tuesday and Wednesday across much of our forecast area. Temperatures remain several degrees below normal as would be expected with this weather pattern. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Gusty west-southwest winds today, with gusts up to 35 knots. Winds weaken slightly and turn more southerly after sunset, with speeds around 10-15 knots. Gusty conditions resume tomorrow, with southwest gusts around 30 knots. Scattered mid- level clouds between 8-15 kft throughout the TAF period. Some scattered rain/snow showers around this afternoon, but no impacts expected. Activity should diminish around sunset. Low chance of showers Thursday afternoon as well, but currently expecting activity to remain east of the airfield. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Gusty west-southwest winds continue this afternoon, albeit weaker than yesterday. Strongest winds expected at KDAG, with gusts up to 45 knots. Elsewhere, west-southwest gusts around 25-35 knots. The exception to this will be KBIH, where winds will be predominately northwesterly at 15-20 knots. There is some potential for westerly downslope winds this afternoon, with similar speeds to the northwesterlies. Wind speeds decrease tonight, but increase again tomorrow with similar conditions to today. In terms of clouds, scattered to broken mid-level clouds persist throughout the period. CIGs at KBIH are forecast to drop to 5-6kft tonight, but should remain above 8kft elsewhere.
