Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 211 PM PDT Mon Apr 17 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Storm system passing through Tonight into Tuesday will below normal temperatures and the potential for additional valley rain, and higher elevation snowfall. Continued WNW upper flow will bring additional chances of light precipitation to northern NV, and slow the recovery of temperatures through Friday. A building upper ridge looks to bring back Spring for the weekend into the start of the workweek. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night Tonight, breezy conditions will continue as overnight temperatures drop into the lower 30s to low 40s. An approaching upper trough that will move through the area tonight through Tuesday This system will bring much cooler temperatures, continued breezy winds and some light valley rain/mountain snow showers across NV. Models have trended toward only light accumulations with this system as precipitation amounts look to range up to 0.10” of rain. Snow amounts will also be light with valleys receiving up to 0.5” of snow, area passes may see up to 1” to 2” of snow with the mountains seeing up to 5” of new snowfall. Highs Tuesday will be much cooler ranging from the lower 30s to low 40s for N NV, while Central NV will see temperatures reaching the mid 50s. A wind advisory remains in effect for Humboldt, N Lander, N Eureka, and N Elko Counties through Midnight tonight for breezy SW winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH possible. The area of stronger winds will shift southeast ahead of the cold front Tuesday and a wind advisory is in effect for S Lander, S Eureka, N Nye, White Pine, SC Elko and SE Elko Counties starting at 5 AM and ending at 10 PM PDT Tuesday for breezy SW to W winds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH possible. With the cold frontal passage Tuesday Snow melt will be eased across the area for a few days. However, river flood watches and warnings are in effect across the area. It is important to remember, that should you encounter areas of flooding, or flowing water across roadways, do not attempt to cross. Turn around, don’t drown! Please obey all roadway restrictions you may encounter, and report any flooding to local law enforcement when it is safe and legal to do so. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday. Cool and slightly unstable air mass across northern NV on Wednesday, with a chance of snow and a slight chance of thunderstorms mainly over Humboldt and Elko Counties. Temperatures remain well below normal with highs only in the 40s to mid 50s through Thursday. The cooler midweek temperatures will briefly decrease the rate of snowmelt. Wednesday night into Thursday morning the light snow showers across northern Nevada will taper off from west to east with generally only flurries in valley locations and up to an inch across mountains of northern NV, mainly Elko County. High pressure gradually building in from the southwest will trend temperatures higher Friday on into the weekend with near normal temperatures Saturday, and slightly above normal temperatures Sunday. Dry conditions are expected across the CWA Friday through Monday. && .AVIATION...Westerly wind gusts to 30kts at KWMC and KBAM this afternoon and evening may result in BLDU and a reduction in CIGs. Increasing and lowering clouds across northern NV tonight into Tuesday with a chance of snow showers at KWMC, KBAM and KEKO which may result in MVFR conditions.
