Deputies from the Ontonagon County Sheriff's office were called to the scene just after 5 pm EDT, and when search and rescue crews and volunteers found the missing boy in the water they began CPR. The boy was taken to UP Health System-Portage where he was pronounced dead. While it is not certain, it is likely that currents (including rip currents) played a role in the drowning death.

.SHORT TERM...(The rest of this afternoon through tonight)

Some much calmer weather has been seen today as the frontal boundary
that caused the chaotic severe weather over our western half last
evening has now moved into WI. That being said, satellite and radar
imagery does show some showers and thunderstorms developing over NE
WI; some of these storms may move over the southern half Menominee
County the rest of today into early this evening as the cold front
slowly drops further south through tonight. Otherwise, mostly sunny
skies are currently being seen across the rest of the area (see the
current visible satellite imagery as of 235PM EDT). Expect the drier
conditions behind the cold front to keep the sunnier skies over us
until the evening hours, when a disturbance currently over western
MN dies out and brings mid-level clouds across our CWA. These mid-
level clouds will likely keep temps slightly warmer overnight than
if they weren't there. Therefore, expect lows tonight to be
generally in the 50s. While the cloud cover should prevent fog from
forming across most of the area, the mid-level cloud coverage may
leave the far west early enough to allow for some areas of fog to
develop over western Gogebic County late tonight.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

Seasonably strong, quasi-zonal midlevel flow over the northern tier
of the CONUS to start the period will become more northwesterly with
time early next week. This will occur as the Desert Southwest heat
dome expands northward and downstream troughing asserts itself over
the Northeast. Overall, this should yield a good deal of subsidence
and result in quiet and seasonable to seasonably cool weather
conditions for most of the period. There is potential for the
western US ridge to expand eastward slightly midweek, resulting in a
brief warm-up, but it is not likely to be long lived as a shortwave
dropping out of Canada is likely to squash the ridging and make a
return to northwesterly flow by the end of the work week. If there
is any period of stormy weather, it's likely to occur around
Wednesday as this wave interacts with the warm and moistening
airmass, but model agreement is not high on this scenario.
Saturday should be a quiet and sunny day across most of the area
with high pressure and a dry airmass. That said, as flow aloft turns
more northwesterly, a weak shortwave is forecast to drop through
during the afternoon and evening. This could touch off some showers
during the afternoon, particularly across the southern and eastern
UP where instability may be greater and lake breeze interactions may
lend a little more lift. Temperatures will be seasonable Saturday
through Tuesday, except a bit cooler than normal along the Superior
shoreline due to onshore flow. Sunday and Monday look quiet with a
lot of sunshine and high pressure overhead. Weak warm advection
begins Tuesday and areas along the Superior shoreline will likely be
several degrees warmer, back near normal values. Will carry chance
PoPs Tuesday night into Wednesday due to the aforementioned wave,
and warm temps on Wednesday with the continued warm advection.
Guidance is not entirely in agreement on convective ingredients, but
some model soundings do show modest CAPE and shear present Wednesday
afternoon and evening as the wave drops through. It should cool back
down for the end of the week with temps likely a bit below normal
along with dry weather.

Winds should be less than 20 kt for most of the forecast period,
although gusts may approach 20 kt late Sunday over the western part
of the lake. It could get a bit gusty with southwesterly gusts near
20 kt Wednesday ahead of a cold front and west-northwesterly gusts
near 20 kt Thursday behind the front. The chance for thunderstorms
is low overall, although it can't be ruled out Tuesday night through
Wednesday.
