.SYNOPSIS...
Broad low pressure will remain across the region with high
pressure located offshore. Unseasonable warmth and periods of
showers and thunderstorms will continue into Sunday night ahead
of an approaching cold front. Cooler, drier, and breezy
conditions will then prevail in the wake of the cold front
Monday through Wednesday as high pressure settles to the south
of the region. Another frontal system may impact the area Friday
or Saturday with increasing temperatures later in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Latest hi res guidance this morning continues to point towards
scattered convection developing across our region. A weak warm
front continues to push northward across the region, clearing
out low level clouds and allowing for better daytime heating.
With decent lapse rates and SBCAPE values now expected to reach
1500 J/kg or more, we could see a few strong thunderstorms
develop today, carrying the risk of small hail and strong winds
from a downburst. Not quite a widespread threat, but can't rule
out the chance a handful of thunderstorms become severe. Furthermore,
PWAT values over 1 inch are placing us in the 90th percentile
for moist environments in mid April, according to climatology.
Heavy downpours within the cells are certainly possible in
thunderstorms. The additional concern is the expected storm
motion of these cells. The storm motion vectors are expected to
be rather weak in addition to the potential for cells training
across the same region, which could lead to some localized urban
flooding.
Previous discussion...Aloft, a closed upper low is the main
player, as it is currently moving northeast along the spine of
the Appalachians and should pass just to our northeast late
today into this evening. As one well-known forecaster formerly
of this office was known to say, "You'll always find a surprise
under a closed low". Today, that surprise potential is related
to convection. Expect fairly widespread coverage of rain when
you average the whole day, so have high end categorical pops
inland, but much lower towards the coast where the marine layer
likely keeps things more stable and less conducive to showers
and storms. However, even inland, precipitation amounts likely
vary widely, since showers and storms may have slow movements.
There is potential for some locally heavy rainfall, perhaps an
inch or two in a few spots, which could cause some localized
minor flooding if it happens in the wrong place. That's the
first potential surprise. The other is that given the closed low
and just enough instability, we could end up with some small
hail. Best chance for all of these issues is from I-95 north and
west, especially across the Lehigh Valley, due to the
aforementioned marine influence closer to the coast. Highs will
be much cooler than the last few days, with readings mostly in
the 70s...60s at the coast.
Tonight, showers and storms dwindle as we lose instability and
the closed low passes northeastward away from us. However, the
low level moisture remains, so expect widespread low clouds and
possibly some dense fog. Lows in the 50s to near 60...coolest
again near the coast.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Brief shortwave ridging early Sunday will give way to falling
heights Sunday night as a closed mid-level low pushes slowly
eastward across the Great Lakes through Monday night. At the
surface, initially broad low pressure will consolidate and
strengthen, but quickly occlude across the Great Lakes on
Sunday. High pressure will be located offshore, thus
unseasonable warmth and humidity will persist until the arrival
of a cold front Sunday night. The occluded low will remain north
of the area in the wake of the cold front with weak high
pressure gradually building to our south on Monday.
Aside from some patchy morning fog across the area and isolated
morning showers near/north of I-78, the daytime Sunday should
be mostly dry. It will be mostly cloudy, although some clearing
is anticipated south of and perhaps near to the Philly metro.
High temperatures are forecast to be mainly in the 70s, although
locations that clear out more will probably warm to near 80
degrees. Dewpoints near 60 degrees will cause the air to feel a
bit muggy for April. Winds will be around 5-10 mph from the
south to southeast.
A cold front will approach the area Sunday evening and cross
the area overnight. Widely scattered showers and a few
thunderstorms associated with the front should be already in
progress upstream as it approaches during the evening. The exact
timing of this activity moving across our area still remains a
little unclear, although the general consensus does appear to be
trending toward a faster solution. The fastest outcome would
have the dry slot moving into the area by daybreak with a nearly
completely dry daytime period Monday. A slower outcome could
have some showers lingering through much of the morning. I have
trended the forecast toward the latest consensus of a faster
solution with this morning's update. The showers and any
thunderstorms will be benign, providing some needed rainfall to
some areas. Low temperatures will be main in the 50s.
For Monday, breezy southwest winds will develop behind the
front with temperatures rising into the mid 60s to near 70
degrees across the coastal plains. Skies should clear across the
coastal plains, although cooler mid-level temperatures and
increased surface moisture should keep skies mostly cloudy
northwest of I-95. A few afternoon showers could develop in this
region as well.
Westerly winds will prevail around 10-20 mph Monday night with
temperatures falling into the 40s and skies gradually clearing.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The closed mid-level low will lift northeast and away from the
area Tuesday through Wednesday as ridging briefly returns. High
pressure will continue building to our south before sliding
offshore. A cooler and drier airmass will be in place behind the
departing system along with breezy west to northwest winds.
Tuesday will be the most windy and coolest day. West winds will
be around 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph possible. Highs will
range from the mid 50s north to the mid 60s across Delmarva.
Tuesday night and Wednesday night will be chilly with lows
ranging from the mid 30s north to mid 40s south. The gradient
winds in place should preclude any widespread frost formation
across the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey.
Temperatures will begin to rebound considerably by Thursday and
Friday as upper ridging shifts offshore and the surface high
shift the winds back to the south and southwest. Highs will be
well into the 70s with lows back into the 50s. Another trough
will approach the region Friday or Saturday with another cold
front impacting the region during this period. This will bring a
returning chance for showers.

.AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...
Today...IFR/LIFR fog and low ceilings this morning across the
southern TAF sites will eventually lift to prevailing MVFR
conditions later this morning, but ACY could hang onto IFR all
day. VFR could return in the afternoon, but with the caveat of
moments of MVFR/IFR as a result of showers and possibly some
thunderstorms overspreading the region. Storm risk is lower
east of I-95 terminals but there, MVFR conditions likely persist
with IFR at times just due to low clouds and fog. Winds today
mostly light from the south to east, generally 5 kts or so. A
few stronger gusts possible in any thunderstorms.
Tonight...showers and storms end and it looks like a blanket of
low clouds and possibly dense fog will envelop most of the
terminals overnight. Winds becoming light and variable.
Outlook...
Sunday through Sunday night...Any restrictions early in the day
should improve to VFR by 18Z or so. MVFR to IFR conditions will
develop again after 00Z as showers and a few thunderstorms
spread into the area. Winds settling out of the south to
southeast around 5-10 kts by 18Z. LLWS possible. Moderate
confidence.
Monday through Monday night...Any lingering restrictions early
will quickly improve to VFR. A few showers possible at RDG/ABE.
Southwest to west winds around 15 kts. High confidence.
Tuesday...VFR. West winds 15-20 kts with gusts up to 30 kts
possible during the daytime. High confidence.
Tuesday night through Wednesday...West to northwest winds
around 15 kts with gusts near 25 kts possible during the
daytime. High confidence.

Sub-SCA conditons expected through tonight. Winds southerly
early this morning becoming easterly to southeasterly but
staying in the 5-10 kt range. Winds gradually become more
southerly tonight and increase to 10-15 kts late, but still

tonight will be the risk of fog on the waters, and marine dense
fog advisories may be required.

RHs continue to increase this morning as rain moves into the
area and the fire weather threat diminishes for the weekend.
Much needed rainfall is likely for Saturday and Sunday night,
with rainfall amounts in the quarter to half inch range. This
may temporarily limit the risk of fire spread until we dry out
later towards the middle of next week.
