This system provided for enough instability for scattered thunderstorms to break out along the West Side Hills and the Sierra Nevada during the afternoon. One thunderstorm produced heavy rainfall near Coalinga which resulted in a brief closure of SR 198 just to the southwest of Coalinga as rocks and mud impacted the highway.

A trough of low pressure will bring a low to moderate chance for showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms across the mountains late this afternoon through tonight. Strong wind gusts will develop across the Mojave slopes and desert areas from this evening through Wednesday morning. A warming trend will begin midweek with forecast high temperatures around 15 degrees above average this weekend. && .DISCUSSION... Mild conditions prevail again today as the area remains under the influence of an upper level trough. Convection this afternoon will bring isolated thunderstorms to higher elevations with a slight risk to see a thunderstorm roll through the valley as well. Winds will pick up this afternoon as that low drops further inland and tightens the surface gradient. Areas through the Mojave Desert including the slopes will see higher gusts this afternoon and overnight which prompted the issuance of the Wind Advisory. By mid-week an area of high pressure will set-up over the west coast bringing much warmer than average temperatures and dry conditions for the region.Temperatures will continue their upward trend through the weekend with portions of the San Joaquin Valley expected to near triple digits by Sunday.
