Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1005 AM PDT Wed Jun 14 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Another round of thunderstorms is possible this afternoon into the early evening over the higher terrain in the Sierra and southern Great Basin. More widespread thunderstorm potential exists on midweek reaching as far south as Mount Charleston on Thursday. Temperatures increase over the weekend, reaching near seasonal highs for mid-June. && .UPDATE...Surface observation sites report mostly light winds across the region this morning. At 10 am, satellite imagery had a fairly expansive band of mid-level clouds extending from the southern Sierra & the northern parts of Death Valley and east across much of Nye and Lincoln counties. Further south, some cumulus buildups were noted over the mountains of Clark and northern Mohave County. Light radar returns indicated some areas under the cloud cover are seeing either light shower activity or sprinkles. For today, expect mostly cloudy skies along with scattered thunderstorms across our northern areas with mainly dry conditions, outside of an isolated thunderstorm, across our southern deserts. In Las Vegas, we expect mainly dry conditions today with a few thunderstorms over the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range. However, the far west and northwest fringes of the valley could see an isolated thunderstorm or two develop late in the afternoon with dangerous lightning, gusty winds and brief heavy rain possible. Otherwise, skies are expected to be mostly sunny to partly cloudy with temperatures a few degrees warmer than yesterday. Even with slightly warmer temperatures today, highs will be several degrees below the 30-year normal of 99 degrees. && .PREV DISCUSSION...143 AM PDT Wed Jun 14 2023... .SHORT TERM...Wednesday through Friday. A weak upper level trough extending from the Pacific Ocean through southern California and Nevada will gradually move southeastward over the coming days. Deeper moisture will remain generally situated across central Nevada into south central California where PWs are about 200-250% of normal. This moisture combined with limited instability will help kick off afternoon thunderstorms across mainly Lincoln, central Nye, Esmeralda, and Inyo Counties. The HRRR is also indicating at least a slight chance over the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range, but overall most of the activity today should remain to the north. Gusty winds and brief heavy rain will be the main threats with any storms. This trough will shift a little south on Thursday which will allow for the thunderstorm chances to also shift a little further south with slightly better chances extending into Clark County and northern Mohave Counties, especially for the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range. PWs for this time of year will remain quite high and will be about 200% of normal across southern Nevada. Once again, brief heavy rain and gusty outflow winds will be the primary threats. This trough will gradually weaken Friday and moisture will gradually scour out. There will still be a slight chance of thunderstorms across central Nevada, but overall coverage will be less as instability weakens. Temperatures will change little over the next couple of days with readings generally about 2-4 degrees below normal. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Mainly clear skies early this morning, but clouds will increase and become SCT around 10k feet late morning and afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected to remain north of Clark County, but can't be completely ruled out over the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range, however, confidence is low. Light and variable winds this morning increasing out of the south to southwest 15-20 kts in the afternoon. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Most TAF sites will see FEW-SCT clouds around 10k feet, but there will be a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms for KBIH after 18z today, about a 10-20% chance. Higher chances will occur across portions of central Nevada this afternoon, mainly across Lincoln, central Nye, and Esmeralda Counties. Winds will generally remain 10 kts or less this morning except for western San Bernardino County where west winds gusting to 25 kts will occur.
