Latest GOES WV imagery shows the upper level low moving across
northern NM while cloud cover continues to dry up across the CWA
as the trough axis approaches. Most returns on radar have also
dissipated with a few light snow showers possible through
daybreak, especially across the Nebraska Panhandle. Much of
south-central WY continues to be the cold spot tonight as many
sensors have dropped into the single digits, including Rawlins,
with a couple inches of snow cover and clearing skies at times.
Expecting cooler temperatures across the region today as daytime
heating will need to overcome the fresh snowpack. Highs west of
I-25 should remain below 32F degrees, but at least mostly sunny
skies are expected. As we headed into the afternoon and the upper
level trough axis finally pushes through, northwest flow will move
in aloft with tightening height and mslp gradients. This will
lead to wind-prone locations including Arlington and Bordeaux
seeing strong winds earlier than most locations. Latest HREF
guidance using the DESI tool shows 3 PM Friday as the earliest
possible 55 mph wind gust at Arlington, which is covered within
the current warning timing. As the upper level jet across the
PacNW continues to progress this direction, strong subsidence will
lead to mountain wave activity across the Laramie Range,
spreading into the adjacent foothills. CAG-CPR height gradients
max out around 12-15z Saturday other factors continue to point
towards Saturday morning as the period for strongest winds. In-
house probabilistic guidance continues to suggest a significant
high wind event across the area while NBM v4.1 also continues to
highlight much of the warned area with 50+ percent probabilities
of exceeding 48 kt (55 mph) gusts Saturday. Daytime mixing and
strong winds aloft will lead to winds spreading across the
adjacent plains near the NE/WY border. Winds will begin to calm
down Saturday evening with a frontal passage helping to relax mslp
gradients across the Laramie Range through Saturday night.
High Wind Warnings remain in effect starting this afternoon for
the wind-prone locations through Saturday evening. The high wind
threat will become more widespread starting early Saturday
morning leading to addition warning areas taking effect with the
strongest wind potential being Saturday morning through the early
afternoon. Only changes during this shift was to upgrade the
remaining watches to warnings for the Laramie Range foothills,
including much of I-25 from Cheyenne through Douglas, and areas
along the NE/WY border such as Torrington and Scottsbluff.
Upcoming shifts will need to monitor latest forecast trends to see
if any additional zones would need to be included with the High
Wind Warnings. Biggest debate tonight included the next row of
counties to the east in the NE Panhandle. Strong subsidence does
not quite make it as far east as Sidney, however daytime mixing
could help transport stronger flow aloft down to the surface.
Additionally, higher terrain locations along the Pine Ridge could
see a local maxima in winds, but right now leaning towards those
areas reaching 45-55 mph.
One additional forecast note that is note entirely wind related.
Portions of the Sierra Madres, mainly above 9000 feet elevation,
could see light to moderate snowfall throughout Saturday. This is
mainly due to moist upslope flow from the southwest that could
lead to a couple inches of accumulation at the higher elevations.
The heaviest period of snowfall looks to be Saturday evening as
the frontal system that will partially calm the winds will provide
better support and lift. There may be the possible need for a
Winter Weather Advisory with the wind and snow combo, but left it
for now as the snow accumulation will be drawn out over multiple
periods.

Key Impact Messages:
1) Scattered mountain and high valley snow Sunday morning then
slowly tapering off through the day with decreasing impacts above
6500ft.
2) Brief warm-up Monday into Tuesday before another cold front mid-
week with increasing precipitation chances for mountains and areas
west of Laramie Range. Overall low confidence on this time frame for
next round of snow and wind.
Weather Discussion: Fast zonal flow will be in place Sunday morning
across the Intermountain West south of a closed H5 low in southern
Canada. A nearly 170kt H3 jet streak will be over to just north of
east WY and NE Panhandle. Lower altitude winds will be elevated
following the high wind event on Saturday as it slowly ends going
into Sunday morning. Orographic lift over the high terrain and left-
rear quadrant placement of the upper jet streak should promote lift
and snow shower support for higher terrain. Winds will likely
downslope off the Laramie Range with limited precipitation for the
WY High Plains and points east. Some shadowing in Laramie Valley
will be probable. Overall snow amounts for mountains should be below
Winter Weather Advisory criteria with NBM having low probabilities
(10-20%) of 4-6" 24 hour totals across the Snowys and Sierra Madres.
For Monday into Tuesday, brief/weak H5 ridging occurs as H5 flow
shifts SW ahead of a strong West Coast closed low system. H7
temperatures climb rapidly back to +3C to +7C across the region,
supporting daytime surface highs in the 50s Monday and 60s on
Tuesday for the High Plains. Confidence in sensible weather elements
decreases quickly going into Wednesday with a wide spread of GEFS
members and multi-model deterministic model envelope on when cold
front surges through and increased precipitation timing from west to
east. Depending how far west the parent H5 closed low resides or if
a smaller vorticity maxima pivots through earlier NE across WY -
will determine cold air advection timing/magnitude and precipitation
enhancement. Max highs Wednesday could be back in the 50s/60s if
west solution verifies but cooler in the 40s/50s for High Plains if
farther east. Comparing GEFS to NBM H7 and surface temperature
distributions, GFS Ops is the warm outlier with cooler EC ensembles
by 10 degrees along with the overall GEFS raw even colder. Have
greater confidence overall of the cooler solution panning out
currently with cooler conditions in the official forecast for
Wednesday. As such, snow levels should drop with the colder solution
for areas west of the Laramie Range - and perhaps the High Plains
with the cold front passage and possible over-running SW flow
isentropic upglide atop the southward progressing surface colder
airmass. None-the-less, Wednesday should be a dynamic day with
surface cyclogenesis ramping up along the CO/WY front range. Stay
tuned how several different components will evolve for sensible
weather impacts (if any).

Pockets of low ceilings and visibility remain across the region
with -SN occurring in the NE Panhandle this morning. LIFR to MVFR
conditions ongoing across SE WY into west Nebraska TAF sites that
will continue through 14-15Z before improving to VFR. -SN will
end through mid morning in Panhandle as ceilings dissipate to near
SKC then high cirrus filters in.
Next aviation concern will be increasing surface winds, especially
for the WY sites initially late Friday and ramping up further Saturday.
KRWL will have the highest winds initially with gusts of 50kts
probable early Saturday morning. KLAR and KCYS will increase into
the 30 to 40 kts range early Saturday just beyond the current TAF
time range. These speeds will spill over towards KBFF Saturday as
a solid high wind event sets up. High Wind Warnings are in effect
for KCYS, KLAR, KRWL, and KBFF starting tonight through Saturday
evening.

Minimal fire weather concerns headed into this weekend with the
recent switch to colder weather and snowfall across much of the
region. Strong westerly winds are expected Friday afternoon

Cooper Cove WYDOT site reported this peak gust. Numerous other WYDOT sites along Interstate 80 between Laramie and Rawlins reported wind gusts in excess of 70 mph as well.
Bordeaux WYDOT site reported an extended period of high wind gusts 9 miles south of Wheatland. Numerous observations above 70 mph. At least two blowovers reported.
Mesonet site 4 miles west of Muddy Gap, Wyoming reported strong winds throughout this period.
Lone Tree WYDOT site reported peak wind gust. Numerous other WYDOT sensors along Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie reported wind gusts in excess of 65 mph during this time frame.
Estimated wind gusts of 60 mph based on nearby mesonet stations.
Bear Creek WYDOT site on Interstate 25 reported peak wind gust. Peak wind at the Cheyenne ASOS was 78 mph at 2:50 PM MDT on the 5th.
Trained spotter located at Horsecreek 12 miles south southeast reported peak wind gusts. WYDOT sensor along Interstate 80 at mile marker 353 reported a peak wind gust of 78 mph at 11:56 AM MDT on the 5th. Numerous other WYDOT sensors reported wind gusts in excess of 60 mph during this timeframe.
Quealy Dome WYDOT site reported peak wind gust along Interstate 80. Numerous other mesonet sites reported strong winds in excess of 65 mph as well.
Deer Creek WYDOT site reported peak gust at 4:36 PM MST on the 5th. Numerous other mesonet sites hit gusts in excess of 58 mph along with the Douglas ASOS hitting 63 mph at 3:07 PM.
WYDOT site at Coleman on Interstate 25 reported strong winds with numerous observations above 70 mph. The Wheatland AWOS also reported wind gusts in excess of 58 mph from 310 to 330PM on the 5th.
Gun Barrell WYDOT site reported peak wind gust.
Rawlins ASOS reported maximum wind gust.
Torrington ASOS reported maximum wind gust.
