Updated Aviation Discussion

SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday...The short term is
characterized by the busiest weather this fall as winds are on the
rise across the region, with continuous precipitation promoting
hydrological concerns, and snow levels dropping over the weekend
allowing for winter weather to return to the region.

A strong low-level jet and an atmospheric river are dropping down
into the region, bringing a solid combo of enhanced conditions
across the region. Current observations show widespread wind gusts
already up into the 30 mph range for much of the lower elevations
of the Columbia Basin and Foothills of the Blues, with higher
elevation gusts exceeding 50-60 mph. Winds continue to increase as
the jet strengthens, peaking overnight into Saturday morning.
Gusty winds are likely to persist into Saturday, but not nearly at
the strength as tonight. Meanwhile, the strongest corridor of IVT
from the Atmospheric River continues to move over the PacNW and
into the region, with QPF amounts of 0.5 to 0.75 inch ongoing, and
overall 2 to 4 inches of new rainfall expected, locally heavier
potentially at the peaks and crests of the Cascades and Blues.
Snow levels are not expected to descend until later tonight,
allowing for much of this to fall as rainfall.

Deep upper low approaches through Monday, with winds lessening,
QPF declining, and temperatures dropping with an arctic air mass.
This will bring snow levels down between 2000-4000ft, with another
round of qpf now providing snowfall across the Cascades. Winter
weather advisories have been issued for early Sunday through the
end of the day, thanks to snowfall amounts of 8-14 inches, with
heavier accumulations in the highest peaks. This will lead into a
much colder push next week as temperatures drop ten degrees
compared to today over the weekend, with even further declines
beyond the short term. Goatley/87

LONG TERM...Monday through Friday...Main concern for next work week
will be a cold spell impacting the area as the current system
bringing us strong winds and precip deepens right over the PacNW.
Ensembles are in decent agreement on the overall pattern through the
end of next week, which suggests sensible weather threats will be
primarily limited to cold temperatures rather than precip. Light
upslope showers cannot be completely ruled out across our high
mountain zones, but nothing impactful expected as of now.

Looking at temperature guidance through the NBM, our coldest days
would stretch from Tuesday to Friday morning, where daytime highs
look as though they'll struggle to eclipse 40 degrees, with
widespread lows in the 20s and teens. This would mean temperatures
15 to 20 degrees below average, with some record lows not out of the
question. Under the axis of this deepening low, skies will be partly
to mostly clear and winds will be light, with the only real
confounding factor being the potential cloud cover under the center
of such a potent low. Cold temps seem to bottom out toward the end
of the week, for Thursday and Friday morning, when drier northerly
flow will be overhead, increasing the potential for clear nights.
NBM probabilistic guidance has 90 percentile min temps in the mid
teens for central OR and the Kittitas Valley for Wednesday
night/Thursday morning, with low to mid 20s elsewhere across our
population centers. Fortunately, even with this cold airmass
overhead, snow concerns in the lower elevations look to be limited
to Monday, when the most moisture will be overhead in our area, but
even then, amounts look pretty light.

At the tail end of this cold spell, models suggest a period of
ridging, before ensemble members diverge heading into next weekend.
Such a pattern would provide a bit of a reprieve from the cold,
while keeping the forecast area dry and quiet. Evans/74

AVIATION...00Z TAFs...VFR conditions to prevail through the
period. Light rain impacts will continue at sites DLS/ALW through
the evening and overnight, while impacts are expected to redevelop
at sites PDT/RDM/BDN after 06Z. However, cannot rule out periodic
deterioration to MVFR conditions with onset of heavier rain at
these sites. Winds will increase through this evening and
overnight, peaking between 25-35kts with gusts 35-45kts possible
at most sites. Winds are expected to decrease to 20-30kts with
30-40kts gusts after 14Z tomorrow morning. Lawhorn/82
