Low pressure deepens as it tracks northeast off the Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast coasts tonight and Saturday. High pressure builds back into
the area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 305 PM EST Friday...
Winter headlines are in place for a very powerful nor'easter that will
track ne off the ern seaboard over the next 24-36 hrs. Only change
this aftrn was to add Newport News to the warning. Wicomico/Somerset
Md were added to the blizzard warning earlier.
Pcpn from the nrn strean energy will cont to drift se this eve while
pcpn from the coastal low moves north up the coast. Models show the
energy from the nrn stream systm transferring to the coastal low but
not until late tonite. This phasing quickly pulls colder air south
changing the initial rain to snow.
Things to watch this eve, high res models are hinting for some banding
this eve mainly nw of RIC (up to 2 inches psbl???) but then this band
quickly dissipates as it drifts se. Matter of fact, it weakens enuf to
where places across south central Va/nrn NC (I95 / I85 corridor south
of PTB) may see the least amt of snow (arnd 1 inch) as the energy
transfers to the coast and the drier air at the sfc wins out.
The coastal low rapidly deepens as it tracks across the VaCapes later
tonite the off the ne coast Sat. This results in the deepest wrap arnd
moisture to go no farther west than the zones bordering the Ches Bay
with the highest QPF amounts right along the beaches. In addition,
tightening prs grdnt will rapidly increase the north winds. Thus, PoPs
rapidly increase this eve with any initial rain going over to snow.
Snow becomes hvy at times along the coast after midnite. Tricky part is
just how west warning criteria accumls fall vs lighter advsry accumls.
Not seeing much difference in todays data vs last nites model runs, so
will keep advsrys going across the wrn 2/3rds of the fa for 1-3 inches,
2-4 inch band for Hampton Roads and the wrn zones bordering the Ches
Bay. Still looks psbl for a period of blizzard conditions across the
ern shore late tonite/Sat morn. Lows in the 20s except arnd 30 far
se. Winds increase and become gusty late with wind chills falling
to btwn 10-20 by sunrise.
Snows tapers off then ends Sat morning along and west of I95, but
lingers thru most of the day along the coast. Gusty north winds 25-35
mph inland and 35-45 along the coast will cause considerable blowing
and drifting snow. Went below MOS guid with highs upr 20s-lwr 30s along
with wind chills in the teens.

As of 1225 PM EST Friday...
Conditions quickly deteriorate tonight as precip moves in from both
from the Northwest and South. CIGS drop to MVFR then quickly to IFR
as rain changes to snow along with increasing north winds tonight.
The snow will likely become heavy at times along the coast with near
whiteout conditions at SBY late tonight/Sat morning. North
winds become gusty 25-35 kts along the coast late tonight/Sat.
The snow tapers off then ends W-E Sat afternoon, hanging on at
SBY through ~18z. The coastal low slowly pushes NE away from
the area Sat night/Sun. Skies clear W-E but gusty north winds
continue along the coast. VFR conditions along with much lighter
north winds Sun through Tue as high pressure builds back into
the area.

.MARINE...
As of 330 PM EST Friday...
Low pressure is beginning to develop off the coast of SC/GA this
afternoon, while ~1035mb high pressure stretches from the
central/srn Plains to the nrn Great Lakes. Winds are N-NE at
10-15kt on the marine area, with 2-3ft seas. Marine conditions
are expected to deteriorate quickly tonight into Saturday
morning as that surface low rapidly intensifies as it tracks to
the NNE. By late Saturday, it is progged to strengthen to ~970mb
as it continues to quickly move NNE. Will be maintaining Gale
Warnings for almost all of the Ocean, Ches Bay, rivers, and
Currituck Sound. The only headline change with the afternoon
package (after collaboration with PHI) is to issue a Storm
Warning for the Maryland coastal waters.
As for timing of winds/seas, N-NE winds will increase to 20-25kt
this evening before gradually turning to the N-NNW and
increasing to 30-35kt in most areas (35-40kt in the nrn coastal
waters) late tonight as the low tracks ~100nm east of the
marine area. Gusts to 40-45kt will be common by late tonight,
with gusts up to 50kt for the MD coastal waters. The reason for
upgrading to a Storm Warning was that the 925mb winds on the
back side of the low are progged to be 45-55kt over the nrn
coastal waters, and with strong CAA it seems reasonable that
these could mix down to the sfc. Additionally, local wind
probabilities show a period of 3-6 hours with a 50% chc of storm
force gusts at Buoy 44009. The highest winds are expected to
occur between 08-16z Saturday with a north-northwesterly
direction. Winds turn more to the NW during the day on Sat and
will remain strong through Sat evening (and part of Sat night).
The Storm Warning runs through 21z/4 PM. Gale Warnings run
through 21z/4 PM for the rivers, 03z/10 PM for the bay/sound,
and 09z/4 AM Sunday for the ocean. With temperatures dropping in
the wake of the low, water temps in the upper 30s-40F
nearshore/in the bay, and strong winds continuing, have issued a
Freezing Spray Advisory for the bay and ocean north of the VA-NC
border from Sat night through Sun AM. Winds diminish below
Small Craft Advisory thresholds by early Sun aftn as sfc high
pressure builds in from the west. Seas will build to 6-10ft
(possibly 11ft near Buoy 44009) tonight into Sat evening, and
remain elevated through much of Sun. Waves in the bay will build
to 3-6 ft.
Calmer, sub-SCA conditions are then expected from Sun night
through early next week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 330 PM EST Friday...
With strong N-NNE winds shifting to the NNW, most sites across the
lower Bay and zones adjacent to the Ocean from Ocean City MD south
to Currituck NC are currently forecast to reach into minor flood
thresholds with the high tide cycle early Saturday morning. The 12z
ETSS came up a bit with forecast water levels, and even with winds
shifting to the N-NNW, it appears that moderate flooding is possible
across ern Currituck County. Therefore, have gone ahead and issued a
Coastal Flood Warning for ern Currituck with advisories for the rest
of the counties bordering the ocean and also much of Hampton Roads.
Will have to watch VA Beach/srn Northampton for the potential for
moderate coastal flooding, but confidence was not high enough to go
with a warning. Overall, it appears that the storm intensifies too
far offshore and while pushing N of the local area for widespread
moderate flooding. With a quick shift in wind direction to the NNW,
confidence at seeing 8 ft seas nearshore is too low at this time, so
no High Surf Advisory issuance for now.
