.SYNOPSIS...A significant winter storm will impact much of central
and southern Utah as well as the western Uinta Mountains and Basin
through Wednesday. A cold airmass will settle into the area into
late week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 00Z FRIDAY)...A mean longwave trough remains in
place over the western CONUS this morning. Embedded within this
longwave pattern are a couple of shortwave disturbances. The first
is a subtle disturbance currently ejecting into northeast Utah. The
second is a more prominent trough diving down the West Coast states
and has started to pinch off into a closed low as it approaches the
northern Sierra Nevada. Meanwhile, the cold front from yesterday's
storm is hanging out along the Utah/Arizona border. In addition, a
shallow backdoor cold front associated with an arctic boundary has
pushed into northeast Utah. This has brought some easterly winds to
southwest Wyoming and into the Wasatch Mountain Valleys, and
temperatures are currently near to below 0F across southwest Wyoming
and portions of the Bear River Valley.
The aforementioned disturbance ejecting across northeast Utah
brought a round of isolated snow showers across northern Utah
overnight. These are still ongoing along portions of the Wasatch
Front, with some instability off the GSL contributing a few
additional bursts of showers affecting areas from around Weber
County to far northern Salt Lake County. The cold airmass has
enabled the snow to quickly accumulate on road surfaces, even though
accumulations are relatively light. These showers are expected to
wind down by mid-morning as the airmass becomes a bit more stable
behind the exiting disturbance.
Precipitation is also continuing across far southern Utah along the
frontal boundary. This should let up a bit as the upper jet exits
the area. However, as the upstream storm system approaches, the
boundary will strengthen and lift northward as a warm front later
this morning. Snow is expected to increase along the boundary
through the day as it shifts into central Utah. Meanwhile, across
southern Utah, precipitation will also increase as moist southerly
flow strengthens, which could bring significant precipitation to
favored upslope areas. This will be in the form off primarily snow
for areas above around 4kft. As the upper low tracks across Nevada
tonight, increasing upper diffluence will result in more widespread
snow across the area. As the airmass cools overnight, snow levels
are expected to reach the lowest valleys, so that even the St.
George area will see accumulating snow, although amounts are not
expected to be greater than an inch or two. Snow will continue
through Wednesday as the storm system tracks across the area.
Overall, significant snow amounts are expected for much of southern
and central Utah and into the Uinta Basin.
One thing that is not covered in the current forecast is the
potential for additional lake-effect snow showers tomorrow night.
The airmass will certainly be quite cold, and some model guidance
suggest there may just be enough moisture. The airmass will be
stabilizing through the night, so the most likely timeframe for lake
effect will be earlier in the night. The HRRR is indicating some
lake effect showers, but this is not picked up in the NBM run used
in the going forecast.
Besides the snow, the other concern will be for gusty winds for
portions of northern Utah. The aforementioned arctic boundary will
continue to strengthen, with the MSLP gradient peaking at around
12mb between KRKS-KOGD. In addition, models support some H7 cold
advection across the northern Utah mountains. Of all the
deterministic models, the GFS continues to have the best cold
advection, with the strongest and most easterly H7 winds. Most other
models fail to turn the winds completely easterly or H7 winds are
lighter. Some models indicate a weak stable layer or critical layer
at crest level, but nothing that would strongly favor a significant
downslope event. Nevertheless, the HRRR is indicating wind gusts in
the 40-50kt range. With such a strong pressure gradient, there
should at least be some localized strong gusty winds near canyons
along the Wasatch Front and Cache Valley. As such, have issued a
Wind Advisory to handle this potential.
.LONG TERM (After 00Z Friday)...A trailing shortwave trough will
pass over the CWA Thursday night into Friday will maintain cold
temperatures over the area, however limited moisture will result in
only a slight chance of mountain snow in Northern Utah/SW Wyoming.
Ridging builds back in over the weekend with the potential of
another trough entering the region on Monday.
The first positively tilted trough has continental Canadian origins,
hence there won't be much moisture on board this wave. However,
there will be cold 700 mb temperatures and a brief window of NW flow
that could allow favored orographic mountain regions of the northern
portion of the CWA to squeeze out the limited moisture that is
available. NBM 25th-75th percentile ranges are indicating a trace-2"
for mountains and <1" for valley locations.
A ridge builds in behind this wave over the weekend leading to
temperatures rising 10-15 degrees.
Afterwards, there is some uncertainty as to follows this progressive
ridge. About 50% of ensemble members suggest a trough moving
through, however only 25% of ensemble members favor a wetter trough.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Conditions at the KSLC terminal will improve to
VFR after snow showers clear the terminal around 06Z. CIGs will
remain near or just below ridgetop levels so mountain obscuration is
possible throughout the period. CIGs will decrease during the second
half of the period, eventually leading to MVFR conditions, ahead of
an approaching low pressure. Additionally, easterly winds could
strengthen this afternoon/evening. Downsloping winds may become a
concern, however winds at the terminal may turn westerly, as is
typical during KSLC downsloping events. LLWS will need to be
monitored as the day progresses.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...There will be a mix of
VFR/MVFR/IFR for the entire area as snow showers and low CIGs
prevail. Most of the period should be snow free, however CIGs could
maintain MVFR status or at least result in mountain obscuration. As
the day progresses southwesterly winds will be gusty for the
southern terminals. The northern terminals will likely experience
strong easterly downsloping winds. This could result in LLWS
conditions. By this afternoon a large area of snow will begin to
fill in across southern Utah resulting in IFR conditions.

Several SNOTEL stations including Brian Head, Webster Flat, Sunflower Flat, Harris Flat, Widtsoe, and Long Valley Junction recorded 1.2 to 1.6 inches of snow water equivalent, or approximately 16 to 24 inches of snow.
Bryce Canyon National Park Headquarters personnel reported 13.5 inches of snow. In addition, the Aqua Canyon SNOTEL recorded 1.15 inches of snow water equivalent, or approximately 16 inches of snow.
Storm total snow accumulations included 11 inches in Cedar City, 9 inches in both Summit and Beaver, and 8 inches in Milford.
Storm total snow accumulations included 10.5 inches in Vernon and 9.1 inches in Tooele.
Storm total snow accumulations included 9.7 inches in Henrieville, 8.4 inches at Kodachrome Basin State Park, and 7 inches in Boulder.
Storm total snow accumulations included 11 inches in Hatch and 8.1 inches in Orton.
