What happened

The episode as NWS SHV wrote it up.

A slow moving cold front moved through extreme Southeast Oklahoma shortly after daybreak on February 2nd, and into Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas through the afternoon. However, the deeper colder air was dammed up in the Ouachita Mountains of Southeast Oklahoma and Western Arkansas, with temperatures slowly falling to and below freezing across much of Deep East Texas during the late afternoon through the evening hours on the 3rd. Meanwhile, a longwave trough moved into West Texas and Western Oklahoma during the daytime hours on the 2nd, with areas of sleet and snow developing ahead of the trough over much of Oklahoma and Texas. While the precipitation started off as rain across East Texas early on the 3rd, it eventually transitioned over to a mixture of freezing rain and sleet across Shelby County, with ice accumulations of up to a glaze reported, mainly on bridges throughout the county.

.SHORT TERM.../Tonight/

For Tonight, planning on keeping the Winter Storm Warning for our
far western and northern counties as is with the warning set to
expire at 6 pm. The warning may need to be extended or downgraded to
a Winter Weather Advisory for our Southwest Arkansas Counties
depending on just where the back edge of precipitation is by 6 pm
this evening. Reports suggest we have seen at least one quarter of
an inch of freezing rain mixing with sleet across our far western
counties including McCurtain County where large limbs have fallen
resulting in power outages, across our Southwest Arkansas Counties,
temperatures are still above freezing across most major cities with
the exception of far northern Howard, Hempstead and Nevada Counties
where ice accumulation has been reported. Potential impacts across
our Southwest Arkansas counties support the continuation of the
Winter Storm Warning attm. Additional Freezing rain and/or sleet
accumulation will be near or less than one tenth of an inch and we
could also see some light snow accumulations well north and west of
the I-30 Corridor this evening with some additional light snow
possible across far Southeast Oklahoma in association with the
trough itself late tonight.

Further south and east where the Winter Weather Advisory is still in
effect across portions of Northeast Texas and North and Northeast
Louisiana near the I-20 Corridor, the Advisory is still in effect
until 9 pm this evening. We will most likely be able to cancel the
Advisory early across all our NE TX counties as well as some of our
Southwest Arkansas Counties but latest progs suggest that the
precipitation will not completely be done across our northeast
third until closer to 9pm so will not be making any changes to our
Winter Weather Advisory with this package. Additional freezing
rain, mixing with sleet at times will be mainly near or less than
one tenth of an inch.

Concerning temperatures, coldest temperatures tonight will obviously
be across our far west, northwest and northern zones where we have
seen ice accumulation. Elsewhere, middle and upper 20s are a pretty
good bet and that means any liquid water on bridges and overpasses
will quickly become ice. Not sure just how much drying we will see,
if any, between the time the precipitation ends late this afternoon
into the evening hours across our region and when the temperature
falls below freezing this evening for those areas still above
freezing but obviously hazards will exist on those bridges and
overpasses.

Brisk north and northwest winds will continue overnight and while
wind chill values will not quite meet Wind Chill Advisory criteria
across our region, values will fall into the teens across our
western third and northern third overnight tonight.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Thursday Night/

Our four state area will be under the influence of a large Arctic
surface high with the 1042mb air mass edging across N TX during
Friday. And with that position we will continue with breezy N/NW
winds around 10 mph adding a chill to the air. Any residual ice,
especially in shaded areas, may even linger into Saturday as skies
will only briefly clear for our I-30 corridor mid afternoon and
elsewhere late in the day or early in the evening. As a result, with
the colder start, our highs will struggle into the mid to upper 30s
and some lower 40s south of I-20.

Clear skies will amp up the radiational cooling to make for a very
cold start to our weekend with teens and lower 20s for a broad
average. There might even be a single digit or two in northern
McCurtain and about 25 degrees in Natchitoches for the warmest
forecast low.  Our highs on Saturday will do better with less winds
and range in the 40s expected areawide. The weekend continues chilly
with lows on Sunday back in the upper teens to mid 20s range across
the area. The winds will become lighter and somewhat variable to end
the weekend with highs still below average, but at least in the low
to mid 50s.

The long range models have more high pressure of of 1033mb back down
over north Texas to start the work week. And once again more
northerly winds which will keep temps pat one more day with warmer
readings back to afternoon averages anyway. Our morning lows will be
warming at a slower pace, and still keep below freezing for many
into midweek. Later in the week, more of the same with another
1030mb high over north Texas on GFS for midday Thursday, while the
ECMWF is milder with 1024mb. So a dry week to be sure with a real
slow warming trend with no return flow, just cold to cool high
pressure.

AVIATION...

Difficult terminal forecast through the first 12 hours or so as we
transition through mixed precipitation. Light -FZRA will be
possible at all terminal as the precipitation ends from west to
east across our airspace late this afternoon into the evening
hours. Look for IFR and occasional LIFR ceilings to continue even
in the wake of the precipitation tonight through the tail end of
the TAF period. Did show some improvement at the tail end of the
close to 04/18z at the TYR/TXK and GGG terminals with ceilings
coming up to MVFR categories. Should see clearing from NW to SE
across our airspace just beyond this 24hr TAF window.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for southwest Arkansas in the
Texarkana vicinity, for all of north Louisiana's I-20 corridor,
and for deep east Texas and northeast Texas from Lufkin to
Longview and Atlanta.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight...

The freezing line will continue to edge southward this afternoon
and evening. So we can expect the ongoing rain to transition over to
a light wintry mix of precipitation later this afternoon and
evening. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 9PM. Expect
driving conditions to quickly deteriorate once this transition
occurs, with a trace to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulations
possible in the advisory and then freezing any slush hard overnight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday...

Any lingering icy bridges or overpasses may thaw a bit, but then
refreeze for Saturday morning with low 20s. Beyond this residual
threat of lingering ice early on Friday and possibly Saturday, no
other hazardous weather is expected at this time.

Much colder and now drier air continue to pour into the region
with a wintry mix now affecting much of the area in the Winter
Storm Warning, which continues until 6PM. Expect driving
conditions to quickly deteriorate once this transition occurs,
with freezing rain accumulations near a quarter inch, along with
sleet and snow accumulations possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday...

Given the expected icy surfaces in the warning area, many roads
will freeze hard overnight and may thaw a bit Friday afternoon
with upper 30s, but then refreeze leftovers overnight with lower
20s. So there may even be some residual threat of lingering ice
early on Saturday, but no other hazardous weather is expected at
this time.
