.SYNOPSIS...

Winds will become more southeasterly today as a surface high
pressure establishes over the western into the central Atlantic
causing a more typical weather pattern for the next several days.
On Saturday, an area of moisture embedded in the winds will
increase the chances of showers and thunderstorms. Better moisture
is expected on Thursday.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday...

As the influence of Hurricane Earl moves out of the region, A
building surface high pressure from the western into the central
Atlantic will dominate the local wind pattern for the short term
period. This will cause winds to shift to the southeast today and
east southeast Saturday. Clear skies early in the day will allow
rapid heating in the still moist atmosphere and take heat indices
up to 102 to 109 degrees across much of the northern tier of
municipalities. A heat advisory has been issued from 10 AM to 4
PM AST. The humid air will also fuel more showers and
thunderstorms early in the afternoon from a large area of
plentiful tropical moisture that lingers across forecast area.
Precipitable water values (PWATs) will be slightly above the
climatological normals at around 2 inches. This moisture, in
combination with the diurnal and local effects is forecast to
result in the showers and thunderstorms today, especially across
some interior sections and northwestern and north-central areas.
The latest models guidances suggest the bulk of the activity
across northwest Puerto Rico. Late in the day, a somewhat drier
airmass is forecast to filter in. The drier air and the lack of
heating tonight will maintain fair weather conditions with a few
clouds and isolated showers, mainly over the waters. After that,
conditions will deteriorate again on Saturday morning when a pulse
of moisture moves in. So far, the models agree that Saturday is
the wettest day of the short-term period. Therefore, morning
activity is forecast for the eastern third of Puerto Rico in the
morning hours, followed by strong convection through sectors of
the western and interior of Puerto Rico. With the heaviest
showers, thunderstorm activity is expected. The main concerns with
the thunderstorms will be gusty winds, frequent lightning, and
locally heavy rainfall that will produce urban and small stream
flooding.

Drier conditions are expected for Sunday, as the bulk of the
moisture moves west and patches of moisture with PWATS of 1.5 to
1.8 inches filters into the forecast area. Nevertheless,
conditions are not supportive for widespread activity; the usual
activity with the diurnal pattern and the local effects is
forecast for western interior sections. This activity is forecast
to be significant in the afternoon hours, diminishing in the
overnight hours, but cannot rule out passing showers across the
waters and coastal sections.

&&

.LONG TERM...Monday through Friday...

High pressure in the eastern and western sections of the Atlantic
will build and join across the sub tropical Atlantic during the
forecast period and the easterly low level winds will increase. A
weak tropical wave will ingest some of the feeder band left over
from Hurricane Earl and pass through on Tuesday. While a second
wave with a surge of moisture will drive in on the somewhat
accelerated flow on Thursday. At this time, this is expected to
bring the best moisture of the new week. Also considered is a long
wave trough at upper levels to the north of the area that sheds a
low pressure circulation which travels south on Monday and west
on Tuesday toward the Bahama Islands. That trough will cross the
local area on Tuesday and increase the instability over the area
later Monday and Tuesday. This TUTT will not travel far from the
eastern tip of the Bahama islands Wednesday and Thursday and will
begin to return on Friday. With flow now easterly at lower levels
throughout the period, the pattern will become typical, but the
convective activity and continued abundance of moisture will keep
most areas wet across the island whether in the east in the
mornings or the west in the afternoons when thunderstorms will be
most likely. The TUTT low in the area Monday night through
Wednesday should also increase the coverage of thunderstorms from
the typical pattern.

.MARINE...
Issued at 452 AM AST Fri Sep 9 2022

As Hurricane Earl recedes, seas have been slowly decreasing at
both the inner and outer Atlantic buoys (41053, 41043) during the
last 24 hours with the inner buoy now showing less than 3 feet for
the last several hours. A new pulse of swell from Hurricane Earl
when it becomes a major or near major hurricane will enter the
area Monday and Tuesday bringing hazardous seas and a high risk of
dangerous rip currents to most northern shores.

For today however breaking waves of 6 feet will bring a high risk
of rip currents to Culebra and this will also increase on Saturday
for much of the north coast of Puerto Rico.
