What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A cold front approached the eastern mid-Atlantic late on May 22. Ahead of the front, a warm and strongly unstable air mass was present. However, wind shear was fairly weak and frontal forcing was not overly strong. As the front moved east, a couple areas of thunderstorms developed with daytime heating, gradually progressing eastward from late afternoon through the evening. As supported by the environment, some storms became strong to marginally severe with a few instances of damaging wind. Storm activity gradually waned by the later evening hours with loss of heating, and the frontal passage brought quieter weather by the following day.

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will move through the region tonight, and
the front will settle offshore on Monday. High pressure builds
in for Tuesday and Wednesday, then a frontal system may approach
the area later next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect until 9 PM.

Moisture advection surging into the region ahead of an
approaching cold front. Surface dew points have been running
several degrees higher than forecast, generally in the upper 60s
to low to mid 70s. As a result, this has kept surface
temperatures a couple of degrees below the forecast highs. Sea
breezes have developed along the coast, and temperatures have
dropped off a it in those areas. However, across inland areas,
with a westerly flow, there may be some mixing that lowers dew
points by a few degrees, and temperatures may respond in kind.
This is still resulting in heat index values generally in the
mid 90s, with heat index values in the upper 90s more isolated.
With heat index values a bit lower than expected, will cancel
the Heat Advisory that was in effect until 6 pm.

With the heat and humidity, surface based CAPE and MU CAPE
values are upwards of 2500 to 3000 J/kg. 0 to 6 km Bulk Shear
over the area is less than 20 kt, and the highest shear will be
associated with the primary shortwave well north and west of the
region. An initial area of showers and thunderstorms is firing
up well ahead of the cold front along a thermal trough in
eastern Pennsylvania, but the bulk of the activity will arrive
in the early evening hours as that cold front approaches. The
Storm Prediction Center has the bulk of the region west of the
Delaware River in a Slight risk for severe weather, and the
primary timing will be from around 5 PM to 8 PM. With loss of
diurnal heating, storms will lose intensity as they track east
into southern New Jersey. The primary threat is damaging winds,
but large hail cannot be ruled out. Locally heavy rain is also
possible due to the relatively light winds aloft and high PWATs
over 1.5 inches.

Showers and thunderstorms taper off later this evening as cold
front works its way through the region. There may be some
lingering showers over Delmarva and extreme southern New Jersey
after midnight or so.

Cold air advection will be underway tonight with dew points
dropping into the 50s, and temperatures returning closer to
normal.

Monday looks cloudy, but showers should stay to the south and
west of the region. Will keep the forecast dry.

Lows tonight will drop into the 50s and 60s, and then highs on
Monday will top off in the mid and upper 70s.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
The boundary will be well south of the area in the short term
as surface high pressure drifts eastward across southern Ontario
and Quebec provinces. Northeasterly low level flow combined
with ample moisture in mid and upper levels will result in
mainly overcast conditions and temperatures moderated by the
marine influence. Low level moisture will be more plentiful in
the Delmarva where isolated showers are possible.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The long term forecast remains on track per the latest model
guidance.

A persistent onshore flow will allow dewpoints to moderate into
the 50s Wednesday while also keeping high temperatures only in
the low 70s. Mostly cloudy to overcast skies will persist with
most of the region remaining dry.

Thursday into Friday an upper level low that formed over the
western United States will eject northeast towards the Great
Lakes region. Surface low pressure will deepen as it heads
towards Lake Superior with multiple pieces of PV advecting over
the CWA. As this occurs, the chances of precipitation will
increase through the day Thursday.

On Friday, a surface cold front will sweep through the region
as the upper level low starts to fill. This means precipitation
will exit the coast Friday night with clearing expected Saturday
morning as the dry conveyor belt moves overhead. Behind the
cold front, ridging and associated subsidence will make for a
rain-free Saturday and Sunday.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of this afternoon (through 00Z)...VFR overall. However, an
area of SHRA and TSRA will approach western zones from 20Z to
22Z, and then will track towards KPHL by 23Z. TSRA will contain
strong wind gusts and reduced VSBYs in +RA. SW winds around 10
kt. Moderate confidence.

Tonight (00Z through 12Z)...VFR. Those SHRA and TSRA will track
east towards KMIV and KACY, but should lose intensity,
especially after 03Z. Lingering SHRA possible at KACY/KMIV
after 06Z. Winds abruptly shifting to the NW around 10 kt.
Moderate confidence.

Monday...VFR. NW winds around 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday...VFR. Northeast to east wind 5 to 10 kts, a little
breezier at the coast. Moderate confidence.

Wednesday...Mainly VFR. East to southeast wind 5 to 10 kts.
Moderate confidence.

Thursday and Friday...VFR except MVFR in scattered showers and
thunderstorms. South wind 10 kts becoming southwest on Friday.
Moderate confidence.

Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions. SW winds will increase to
15 to 20 kt, but widespread 25+ kt gusts not expected. Winds
shift to the NW this evening behind a cold front.

Showers and thunderstorms possible this evening, but activity

Sub-SCA conditions expected Monday with NE winds around 10 kt.
