A strong cold front moved through the mid-Atlantic late on May 16. Multiple areas of convection developed ahead of the front. With moderate to strong instability and shear, the environment ahead of the front appeared favorable for widespread severe weather. However, a messy convective evolution served to limit the overall threat. The greatest frontal forcing also ultimately tracked further north. However, some storms still became strong to severe and produced a few instances of damaging winds and hail.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 155 PM EDT Mon May 16 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A strong cold front will sweep across the Mid Atlantic today bringing the threat of severe weather to the region. High pressure will build in on Tuesday. A weak low may cross the region on Thursday along a warm front. High pressure will build across the western Atlantic Friday and into next weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... ***Severe Thunderstorm Watch #229 in Effect through 8 PM... A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for eastern Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey, with the exception of Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties until 8 pm. Unstable air is in place across the area ahead of an approaching cold front and the second of multiple short wave/vorticity impulse aloft. This wave has intensified the showers and thunderstorms across northeast Pennsylvania. This activity will continue to move northeast across eastern Pennsylvania and northern and central New Jersey this afternoon. Another short wave/vorticity impulse approaches the area this afternoon as a cold front moves into the area, and this will set off another area of showers and thunderstorms that will move into the area from the southwest. Much of the area remains under an ENHANCED risk for severe weather. ML CAPEs over the area look to be maxing out around 1000-2000 j/kg so the storms should be intensifying as they move in. What's also concerning is that the forcing and shear continues to look quite impressive as a sharp trough axis in the upper levels pivots in while acquiring a negative tilt helping to trigger significant 500 mb height falls on the order of 100m over 12 hours. And the best forcing appears to be targeting eastern PA. Deep layer shear vectors look to be around 40 knots with hodographs indicating low level turning of the winds as well and 0-1 km SRH values of 100-200 m2s2. Given this set up with the linear nature of the forcing and more than ample moisture widespread severe weather appears likely. The mode should be mostly linear as a main line moves into our eastern PA zones but I'm still concerned that there could be storms that develop out ahead of the line in response to low level convergence from sea and bay breezes. If this occurs, this would favor interior southern NJ and Delmarva and the mode could tend towards discrete supercells. Expect the primary line of storms to move eastward through the afternoon likely affecting the urban corridor by around 21z or so. But again, if storms do develop ahead of the line the set up on radar could get a bit "messy" with merging storms and outflow boundaries. In terms of the specific severe weather threats, damaging straight line winds of 60-70 mph are still the main threat but given the low level shear, SRH, and low LCLs tornadoes can't be ruled out. Also, the strong lift and L57 lapse rates around 6.5 C/km could also support large hail. Biggest threat for hail and tornadoes could end up being with more "discrete" type cells that develop ahead of the main line or with merging storms. Finally, PWats should increase to around 1.5 inches and while and the overall system will be fairly progressive, rain rates will likely be intense meaning if any areas near or over the urban corridor get hit with multiple rounds this could lead to instances of flash flooding. The storms should reach the coast by around 0z and while they may have started to weaken somewhat, they will still be capable of producing severe weather even here. Activity should finally come to an end by around mid evening as the front sweeps off the coast ushering in cooler, drier air. Following a warm, humid day today with highs for most areas well into the 70s to near 80, lows tonight will be in the 50s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... A surface cold front will be well offshore Tuesday morning with an upper level low located near the Ontario/ Quebec border. The primary wave axis will be negatively tilted across the Canadian Maritimes, with another weak wave diving down the western flank of the closed low. This will keep modest cold air advection across the region through the day with dewpoints slowly falling into the low to mid 40s by the afternoon hours. High temperatures Tuesday will be mainly in the mid to upper 70s across the region, with 60s forecast over the southern Poconos. West winds of 10 to 20 MPH are forecast, with gusts as high as 30 MPH possible. Tuesday night, surface high pressure will approach from the west with winds rapidly weakening as the PBL decouples. Expect low temperatures in the mid 40s to lower 50s across the area. Surface high pressure will move overhead Wednesday with 850 MB temperatures lowering to around 6 degrees C. This will make Wednesday the coolest day of the work week with highs mainly in the upper 60s to low 70s. Clouds will be increasing though as a shortwave rapidly approaches from the west. Wednesday night, a warm front will approach the region from the southwest with a weak surface low forming along the baroclinic zone. Showers will then move in from the west Wednesday night. Overall, the track of the surface low appears to be further north than previously forecast. Expect lows mainly in the 50s Wednesday night/ Thursday morning. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Most of the overall synoptic pattern in the extended is in rather good agreement with the GEFS, GEPS, and EPS this morning. The below normal mid-level heights of Tuesday and Wednesday will slowly transition to above normal by Friday/ Saturday as the mid-level ridge amplifies over the western Atlantic. Sunday into Monday of next week, the sub-tropical ridge will begin to break down ushering in a break from the very warm temperatures of Saturday. There does, however, remain substantial variability in the details of how the evolution of the wave pattern occurs, and the degree of amplification. During the day Thursday, the surface warm front will lift north across the region with showers ongoing initially. As the wave exits the coast, a brief break in the precipitation is expected (on the subsident side of the shortwave). However, timing of the wave remains rather important here though, as a slower progression would favor another round of showers and thunderstorms developing Thursday afternoon due to day time heating. Either way, Thursday doesn't look like a complete washout, but clouds will be rather widespread with dewpoints rapidly climbing back towards 60 degrees. By Friday, temperatures will start to climb with highs in the mid 80s expected. Dewpoints will also be right back in the mid 60s. The uptick in humidity will be noticeable. On Saturday, the amplification of the mid-level ridge will take shape with heights rapidly rising across the region. Expect high temperatures in the low 90s across the urban corridor. A surface cold front will then cross the region Sunday with temperatures falling back towards normal for this time of year. && .AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. A line of convection from KRDG to KBGM moving ENE and should impact Poconos, Lehigh Valley, and northwestern NJ 18Z to 22Z. More convection is expected from KTTN to KILG and points south and east from 19Z to 23Z, including KPHL. G50kt possible with stronger storms. Ceiling and Vsbys will be VFR for entire period except 2SM and 2kft deck in convection. Surface winds will become westerly this evening 10 to 20 knots and continue into Tuesday. Outlook...
