Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1007 AM PDT Mon May 16 2022
.SYNOPSIS...Abnormally warm temperatures will continue through
much of the upcoming week. Afternoon breezes will be possible each
afternoon. A pattern change late week will bring stronger winds to
the region, elevated fire weather threat, and slightly cooler
temperatures.
&&
.UPDATE...Quiet but warm weather continues through mid-week, with
temperatures remaining in the 90's and low 100's. Besides the
potential for a couple thunderstorms in northern Lincoln County on
Tuesday, the area remains dry for the foreseeable future. A system
coming later this week brings some gusty winds and slightly cooler
temperatures. However, by the end of the weekend, highs return to
above normal values. Updated forecast package will be out this
afternoon.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Through Sunday.
Cloudiness which unfortunately obscured last evenings lunar eclipse
for some will continue to lift off northeast through northern
Arizona and Utah over the next 3-4 hours. More high clouds are
already spreading over western Nevada and the southern Sierra
Nevada. This area will continue eastward throughout the day.
Finally, a weak shortwave trough will slide southeast through the
region Tuesday. NAM along with other hi-res models generating a
better area of instability across northern Lincoln and White Pine
Counties Tuesday afternoon and evening. So, we do have a chance of
showers and thunderstorms within the panhandle of Lincoln County.
Otherwise, temperatures will remain above normal with Las Vegas
staying in the upper 90s to low triple digits through Thursday.
Hottest temperatures well into the triple digits will stay confined
to the lower CRV and Death Valley NP. As for Heat Risk, lower
elevations of the Mojave Desert stay in the "Moderate" range.
Afternoon breezes look to top out around 25-30 mph, slightly
stronger in Mohave County up to 35 mph each day.
Ensembles still show a stronger trough over western Canada Wednesday
progged to slide southeast through the northern Rockies late week.
Have yet to see the 00Z WPC Cluster Analysis but based on the 12Z
solutions there remains some uncertainty on if the trough will dig
further south and west into the Great Basin. A deeper trough
solution would produce stronger winds, elevate our fire weather
concerns but lead to more cooling. Of course, the opposite would
occur if the trough just glances the area.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Early morning south wind 8-12 kts
through about 13Z. Then, light winds through the morning with
southwest breezes 10-15 kts with gust 25 knots Monday afternoon.
Expect gusts to subside around 04Z this evening with a southerly
wind 8-12 kts continuing overnight. SCT-BKN aoa 20 kft during the
period.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Typical southerly afternoon breezes and lighter,
overnight winds are expected across much of the region through
tonight. South-southwest 10-20 kts gusts of 25-30 knots impacting
all terminals. SCT-BKN aoa 20 kft expected during the
period.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
