A warm front moved through the mid-Atlantic on the morning hours of March 31. This was associated with a strong area of low pressure moving through the Great Lakes, which had brought widespread severe weather to the Southeast US in prior days. Behind the warm front, widespread cloud cover and scattered showers lingered for most of the day over the eastern mid-Atlantic. Despite temperatures that still warmed to above average values, this greatly limited instability. However, more sunshine and subsequent instability developed further west over central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. As a cold front approached by late afternoon, forcing for ascent increased, and strong wind fields were in place across the region in the warm sector of the Great Lakes low. Widespread convection developed over the interior mid-Atlantic, some of which became strong to severe. Convection generally favored a linear evolution with some embedded supercell structures. Because of the orientation of mid and upper level winds and the decreasing instability to the east, thunderstorms were very slow to move east and gradually lost intensity with time. In the local area, reports of severe weather were mostly isolated and confined to eastern Pennsylvania. However, a short-lived EF1 tornado did touch down over Bucks County, producing a 2 mile path of tree, utility, and some structural damage. Shower and thunderstorm activity continued through much of the night, slowly making its way to the coast, but was well below severe limits over New Jersey and Delmarva in the later hours of the night.

A cold front will cross the region tonight. Another system moves
across our area Friday, then high pressure briefly builds in
Saturday before moving offshore Saturday evening. A disturbance
may arrive Saturday night into Sunday. High pressure builds in
for Monday into Tuesday, then a warm front may approach during
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
***Strong to severe thunderstorms possible late this afternoon into
this evening***
Synoptically, deep low pressure is centered over the Great Lakes
with a warm front extending eastward. The front has been slow to
move north across our western zones. The Lehigh Valley has finally
been warm-sectored, but portions of the Poconos and NW New Jersey
remain on the cool and stable side of the warm front. As of 3 pm,
temperatures were around 70 across the Delmarva into the Delaware
Valley. Temperatures across the far north are still in the 50s.
As we head into the late day hours, the deep low will continue
moving northeastward. This will finally help push the warm front
northward through the entire area.
Storms are still expected to begin entering our area from the west
by 4 or 5 pm. Given that the mean flow and shear will be aligned
fairly closely with the low level boundary, linear complexes are
favored. Damaging straight line winds will be the biggest
threat with any storm, but given the low level shear and
helicity values tornadoes are still possible. The Storm
Prediction Center has expanded the SLIGHT risk for severe storms
to include the entire CWA and have added an ENHANCED area
across eastern PA and just a bit into NW New Jersey. A Severe
Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until midnight for all of our
Pennsylvania counties, all of New Jersey except Cumberland,
Atlantic, and Cape May, New Castle in Delaware, and Kent in
Maryland.
As we progress into the evening, storms will be reaching the urban
corridor by roughly 7 or 8 pm. Damaging winds will be an ongoing
threat, but it should also be mentioned rainfall could be quite
heavy in spots resulting in urban, small stream, and poor drainage
flooding. The Weather Prediction Center has continued with the
Marginal risk for excessive rainfall for our eastern PA zones and NW
NJ.
Although the environment will be less favorable across coastal areas
early tonight, there still will be a threat across this area as the
cold front pushes east.
Outside of any convection, with 925 mb winds near 40+ knots, surface
winds will be gusting between 30 mph to around 45 mph.
The cold front is expected to move off the coast between 4 and 7 am.
With the mid-level trough moving through on Friday, scattered
showers are possible. It will be another windy day with gusts up
into the 30s. Temperatures will mainly be in the 50s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The mid-level wave that brought the active weather pattern to much
of the United States will be exiting New England with surface
high pressure centering over central VA Saturday morning.
Temperatures Saturday morning will be near or just above
freezing for many locations with upper 20s forecast across the
Poconos. Towards the DELMARVA, it looks like temperatures will
be mainly in the mid 30s across the DELMARVA with the winds
remaining elevated enough (as well as upper 20 dewpoints) to
preclude the mention of frost.
During the day Saturday, mid-level heights will bulge as
another shortwave rapidly heads east across the central United
States. This will make Saturday a beautiful day with high
temperatures in the upper 50s.
Clouds will start to rapidly increase from the southwest
Saturday night as the next mid-level wave approaches from the
west. Precipitation will likely spread over the region early
Sunday morning. For most of the region plain rain is expected,
but a rain/snow mix is likely for the Poconos.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The long term forecast period remains on track per the latest
model guidance.
A fractured mid level wave will approach the region early Sunday
morning, with the primary wave axis centered just southwest of
the James Bay. The southern portion of this fractured wave will
begin to take on a negative tilt as it ejects northeast across
the Mid-Atlantic. As this occurs, the wave will try to wrap up
very close to NJ. This means that most of Sunday will be cloudy
with scattered showers and temperatures in the mid 50s.
Sunday night into Monday morning the wave will exit the coast
with surface high pressure building overhead. Behind this
system, temperatures look seasonably cool with dry weather
forecast for Monday. For the first part of the work week though,
it looks like a rather zonal and progressive pattern as another
wave approaches the region Tuesday. This wave will be from
Texas and looks to shear out, with fragments of PV traversing
the region late Tuesday/ early Wednesday. As this occurs, a
developing surface low pressure and warm front will surge north.
The amount of precipitation and strength of the overrunning
still remains to be seen at this point, but either way
Wednesday looks to likely be wet. Another shortwave is
forecast to cross the region on Thursday with more rain likely.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...Showers and thunderstorms this evening with MVFR or IFR
conditions, eventually improving to VFR overnight. Southwest winds
10-15 knots with gusts 20-30 knots early, shifting to west or west-
northwest behind a cold front. It should be also noted that through
this evening any storms affecting the TAF sites could produce severe
wind gusts over 50 knots.
I have the most impactful thunderstorm threat moving through KRDG
and KABE between 21 and 23z, the I95 terminals between 23z and 01z,
and KMIV and KACY between 01 and 03z.

A tree was reported down in Perry Twp near Zions Church Rd. Time estimated from radar.
A tree was downed onto wires on Wertman Rd. Time estimated from radar.
Tree limbs were down on wires on Hecktown Rd. Time estimated from radar.
A tree or limbs were downed on wires near Grace Rd at Coventryville Rd. Time estimated from radar.

A tornado began in Hilltown Township along Souderton Road about a |half mile west of Route 313/Dublin Pike. The tornado continued to |the northeast along Souderton Road where it uprooted and snapped |numerous trees and also caused primarily cosmetic damage to a few |homes. The CVS Pharmacy at the intersection of Souderton Road and |Route 313 also sustained minor cosmetic damage, including the front |door being blown out. Also near this intersection, a home sustained |minor cosmetic damage and a number of trees were uprooted and |snapped where the tornado crossed into Bedminster Township. The |tornado continued northeast along Bedminster Road weakening |somewhat, but still uprooting and snapping several trees and causing |cosmetic damage to some homes, especially near the intersection of |Bucks Road.
The tornado continued northeast toward Elephant Road while |continuing to cause mainly sporadic tree damage, including uprooting |several trees in front of a home. The tornado passed over the |Bedminster Municipal Authority complex, where it blew off roof |shingles from several well constructed buildings and uprooted a few |small trees nearby. The tornado crossed Elephant Road about 700 feet |south of Irish Meetinghouse Road where it caused some more |substantial tree damage. At least a dozen or more healthy trees were |uprooted or snapped along a driveway, one of which fell onto a |parked vehicle. The home on this property sustained minor cosmetic |damage and had some roof shingles blown off. The tornado then |continued into a wooded area with homes paralleling Irish |Meetinghouse Road where the tree damage became more sporadic once |again, and no additional structural damage was noted. The tornado |then crossed just north of Irish Meetinghouse Road where it uprooted |a few small trees in an open field then dissipated.
No known injuries or fatalities occurred from this tornado.
