.SYNOPSIS...
A trough will slide through the Mid Atlantic and northeastern U.S.
through Wednesday. An associated cold front slowly moves across the
eastern seaboard through tomorrow. High pressure weakens as it moves
into the area by mid week, before another cold front approaches
later Thursday into Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
No major changes to the forecast aside from the usual refinement in
convective timing and placement. A warm front is currently bisecting
the area from west to east along to just north of the I-76/AC
Expressway corridors as of 6 am this morning. Mostly totals of
a quarter to half of an inch have occurred, with locally amounts
of up to 3 to 4 inches over a highly localized area of southern
Ocean County in New Jersey where a Flash Flood Warning is in
effect.

The strongest storms this morning have mostly been along the
warm frontal boundary where there has been stronger low-level
forcing and wind shear. Storms have been attempting to tap into
this and we have seen better structure in a few storms such as
the one that moved over southern Ocean County and over the
Harvey Cedars area. Expect the greatest chances for flash
flooding and locally damaging winds to be along the front as it
lifts northward.

To our west, a longwave trough axis will push an surface low across
upstate New York and a trailing cold front towards our area from the
Ohio Valley. Another shortwave and associated vorticity maxima will
eject from the trough axis later this afternoon, which will likely
help re-develop additional showers and thunderstorms.

The main concern will continue to be localized poor drainage and
potential flash flooding today. There is currently a Marginal
excessive rainfall outlook for most of the CWA from
Wilmington/Philadelphia northward with PWATs around 2 inches. There
is some concern for back building with southwesterly winds through
the column from the 850 mb level upward, with southeasterly winds
below this. The good news is that storm motion is a little stronger
than yesterday with 0-6 km mean wind from 15 to 20 knots. Storm
total rainfall through 2 am will range from almost 2 inches over
northern New Jersey to around a quarter to half of an inch along the
southern New Jersey coast.

Highs today will stay held back thanks to the overcast skies, making
it into the upper 70s to lower 80s. A few readings in the low to mid
70s will be found over the Poconos.

Showers and thunderstorms will gradually push off to the east
tonight, moving east of the urban corridor around midnight or so.
Lows will range from the upper 60s to around 70 over Philadelphia.
Some patchy fog is also possible as winds won't be particularly
strong behind the front and continued drying occurs from today's
rains.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The cold front will continue to push offshore of our area into
Tuesday as the main mid-level trough associated with the surface low
deamplifies and slowly ejects to our north and east. A weak surface
trough on the back side of the low may help kick off a few
instability showers and thunderstorms into the afternoon, mostly
along and north of the I-78 corridor. Kept PoPs capped at Chance for
Tuesday afternoon. Instability isn't all that impressive, but with
MUCAPE values up to 1500 J/kg, some embedded thunder to weak
thunderstorms may occur. There could also be some small hail, due to
steeper mid-level lapse rates and CAPE through the 0 to -20C
freezing layer.

Highs will bounce back upward with clearer skies Tuesday, making it
into the low 80s north and west of I-95 and the mid to upper 80s
along and southeast of I-95.

High pressure will continue to build into the region with an
additional cold front pushing southward from eastern Canada well to
our north in the Great Lakes. Lows Tuesday night will drop into the
mid to upper 60s. Some additional patchy fog is also possible again
Tuesday night.

While warmer, Wednesday should be a pretty quiet and pleasant day
with mostly sunny conditions and highs in the mid to upper 80s. Dew
point should mix out into the low 60s thanks to continued northwest
flow bringing more of a continental airmass into the region, so heat
indices shouldn't trend far from actual air temperatures in the
afternoon. Lows Wednesday night will drop into the mid to upper 60s
once again.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
No significant changes with the forecast in the long term period. A
meteorological col situation looks to setup prior to the start of
the long range period and should still be in place by at least the
Friday night time frame. In terms of this col situation ridging will
be located to our northwest and northeast and upper level low
pressure will be located well north while to start a weak or
dissipating trough is located over the Eastern CONUS. In a
meteorological col situation the general upper level pattern is
usually slow to change and often guidance and ensembles have
difficulty projecting pattern evolution and strength change of upper
level features. Eventually however the col will have to give and
will be no longer. Guidance indicates majority breakdown of the col
by Saturday night which gives way for the ridge that was to the
northwest to slide east. Sunday could see that ridge to either our
north or northeast with some of the ensembles building the ridge for
the Sunday time frame. Confidence is high that the col will set up
during this week but confidence in the timing and exact location of
the col breakdown is lower. There is at least medium confidence that
the col will breakdown down sometime before the end of period and
there is high confidence that the ridge will slide eastward after
its breakdown. How strong that ridge will be and the timing of its
placement remains to be seen.

At the surface level the upper level situation favors high pressure
to mainly be dominate for most of the long range period with
temperatures remaining mainly above average. Surface high pressure
should remain over the region Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
A cold front looks to approach from the northwest Friday. There is
considerable disagreement between models on how far south this front
will reach before stalling. Some guidance has the front getting
fully south of our region, while other models show the front
stalling just to the northwest of the region. For now, have stayed
close to the previous forecast and a blend of guidance. Guidance
indicates a surface low developing to the south Sunday but it is too
early to have any confidence in the development of this low.

.AVIATION /10Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...Mostly MVFR CIGs with brief improvement close to VFR
possible, especially after showers and thunderstorms move to our
north later this morning after 15Z. Additional MVFR to even brief
IFR restrictions likely as showers and thunderstorms move back into
the region from the west after 18-20Z. Southeast winds turning south-
southwest into the afternoon from 5 to 10 knots. Low confidence.

Tonight...Showers and thunderstorms will move off to the east
through the night. Best chances for MVFR restrictions will be
through 06Z. Southwest winds from 5 to 10 knots turning more
westerly as a cold front moves through the region from west to east.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Mostly VFR through the day and overnight, though there is
a chance of showers and thunderstorms with associated sub-VFR
restrictions, especially at RDG, ABE, and TTN. West-southwest winds
from 10 to 15 knots. Moderate confidence.

Wednesday...VFR. Northwest winds from 5 to 10 knots. High
confidence.

Thursday-Friday...Mostly VFR, but a chance of showers on Friday.
Winds will vary between southwest to northwest 5-10 knots
during the day, then be light and variable overnight. Moderate
confidence.
