An eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga on January 14th at 2027PST generated a tsunami that reach much of the Pacific rim, including the U.S. West coast.

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will dominate our weather throughout the
Martin Luther King Jr Day weekend, keeping the region mostly
rain-free and mild. Temperatures will be above normal, especially
along the coast and in the high terrain. Valley bottoms will remain
trapped under inversions, with persistent and occasionally dense fog
leading to cooler daytime temperatures. The next chance for
significant rainfall comes Tuesday as a weak disturbance moves
onshore and into the Pac NW.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday...Quiet weather is expected the
next few days, though there are still a couple of hazards.
Occasionally dense fog has developed throughout the Willamette
Valley, with visibilities down to a few hundred feet in some
locations. Fog has been slower to develop along a line from roughly
Troutdale to Amity due to drier Columbia Gorge outflow and some
degree of improved mixing due to these breezes. Areas where fog does
develop in the coming hours will probably remain stuck in low clouds
and fog for a good portion of the day - perhaps all day for portions
of Clark County and the central/south Willamette Valley. As a result,
these areas will probably struggle to get out of the 40s today while
most other areas reach the upper 40s and 50s - even the Cascade
passes. The air mass is mild enough such that temps should remain
above freezing despite decent radiational cooling in any valleys that
clear, so frost shouldn't be too much of a concern the next few
mornings.
With high pressure in place both at the surface and aloft, winds will
be light and the air will become stagnant. This will likely cause
issues with air quality. Check with your local air quality agency for
regulations and recommended actions. An Air Stagnation Advisory
remains in effect through midday Monday.
Something you won't normally find in an AFD - The National Tsunami
Warning Center is reviewing the tsunami potential from a very
powerful underwater volcano eruption near Tonga in the SW Pacific,
which occurred around 830 PM Friday evening PST. The first waves from
any potential tsunami would arrive early to mid morning, but it is
important to note that the Tsunami Center has NOT yet determined
there is any threat to Washington or Oregon as of 3 AM this morning.
Coastal interests should stay tuned for any additional watches,
advisories, or warnings that may be issued in the coming hours but
again, no imminent threat has been determined at this time. Weagle
.LONG TERM...Monday night through Friday...Models and their
ensembles are in overall agreement shortwave ridging will more or
less persist across the Pacific Northwest for much of next week. A
couple shortwave troughs will temporarily flatten the ridge Monday
night and then again towards Thursday. These storm systems appear
likely to be weak...bringing with them mainly just light valley
rain and very high mountain snow. Temperatures appear likely to
remain at or above average throughout the extended forecast period.
There is a decent chance that we will enter another multi-day period
of air stagnation for at least some of our valley locations
beginning Friday. /Neuman

.AVIATION...12Z TAFs: Widespread IFR/LIFR cigs and LIFR cigs are
expect to continue as weak flow continues under a ridge of high
pressure and persistent subsidence inversion. Some areas could
see occasional periods of VFR or MVFR prior to sunrise. However,
confidence is low that these improved flight conditions will
persist for longer than a few hours.
After 18Z Saturday, most areas will likely see a few hours of
VFR with the exception of the central and southern Willamette
Valley which will likely maintain IFR/LIFR conditions. However,
given the stagnant weather pattern expect IFR and LIFR conditions
to return to those areas which cleared out after 03Z Sunday,
which is expected to persist through the overnight hours.

KPDX AND APPROACHES...IFR/LIFR conditions expected to dominate
through sunrise. Stronger easterly winds towards KTTD and the
mouth of the Columbia River Gorge will help to mitigate any fog
formation formation, and could cause brief periods of improved
flight conditions near KPDX. Conditions should improve after 18Z
Saturday, but more low clouds and fog will likely return again
after 03Z Sunday. /42

.MARINE...Upper level high pressure continues to dominate the
region along with a thermally induced low pressure that is
building northward along the Oregon coast through the weekend.
This is resulting in generally northerly winds of 5 to 10 kt with
gusts up to 15 kt across all coastal waters through Sunday
night. A weak front will approach the region Monday causing
winds to become southerly.
A persistent westerly swell around 10 to 12 ft early this
morning will persist into tonight before slowly subsiding to 6
to 8 ft on Sunday. This trend is expected to continue through the
start of the upcoming week. Small Craft Advisory conditions are
expected to continue through tonight. Seas will gradually subside
Sunday and fall to around 6 to 8 ft by Sunday night, and remain
there through the start of the upcoming week. /42
BEACH HAZARDS...A westerly swell with a period of 14 to 15
seconds continues along all beaches through this evening. This is
resulting in an elevated sneaker wave threat.

A tsunami generated by an eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'api volcano reached the U.S. West coast. A tsunami wave height of 0.2 feet was measured at the Astoria tide gauge on the 15th. No reports of damage or injury are known at this time.
