As a cold front entered into the Ohio Valley on the evening of October 12th, showers and a few thunderstorms preceded the boundary across southeast Ohio. A few of these storms reached strengths that supported strong winds and large hail. The local emergency manager of Lawrence County observed quarter sized hail near the Coal Grove township early that evening.
