Following a warm frontal passage and ahead of a cold front, a weakly to moderately unstable and moderate to strongly sheared environment developed. As frontal forcing increased, scattered to widespread convective development occurred across the region, with messy, mixed mode storm structures dominating. While the messy storm mode and only somewhat favorable environmental conditions limited the coverage of severe weather, some storms did become strong to severe, producing instances of damaging wind. Convection gradually departed the region during the evening hours.

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will linger in the vicinity for today with a slow
moving cold front approaching towards the evening, resulting in
showers and thunderstorms across the area. The cold front will move
offshore by Saturday afternoon, with high pressure taking over on
Sunday. High pressure will remain in control through midweek, with
warmer and drier weather returning.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A fractured wave pattern can be seen on water vapor this morning
with a vertically stacked area of low pressure over central
Indiana and another wave over eastern Quebec. The vertically
stacked low over Indiana this morning is forecast to slowly move
northeast this morning into afternoon with a broad area of 40 m
height falls across the region. Near the surface, a weak warm
front is currently pushing north across southern PA and
south/central NJ. South of the warm front, visibilities have
started to slowly recover with the exception being along the
coastal waters. We currently have a Dense Fog Advisory in effect
for the coastal strip for southern NJ and DE as well as a Marine
Dense Fog advisory given the restrictions. North of the warm
front, widespread billow clouds can be seen indicating that the
atmosphere is currently stable across most of the region.
Late this morning, the prefrontal trough that is currently
across VA and central PA will slowly progress east. The ongoing
convection across central PA and VA will also slowly head east
with support from the RRQ of the approaching jet streak on the
east or divergent side of the upper level low. Ahead of the
approaching wave, destabilization in the warm sector will occur
mostly thanks to theta-e advection with only minor support from
diurnal heating. The best instability axis will likely form
across eastern PA, the DELMARVA, and western NJ with lower
values along the NJ shore. The warm sector will be characterized
by a tall skinny CAPE with MLCAPE values of 500 to 1000 J/kg.
Low level winds will also begin to rapidly increase in the
expanding warm sector as the core of the LLJ approaches from the
west (around 35 to 40 kts). Effective shear values are forecast
to be rather favorable (in the 35 to 45 kt range) for the
potential for supercell development, but convective mode remains
rather uncertain. The cloud layer mean wind and effective bulk
shear vectors are quasi-parallel to the prefrontal trough axis
with the anvil-level storm-relative flow vectors being quasi
parallel as well. Overall this would favor a "messy" mode with a
few discrete cells possible as well as some broken line
segments. This means that damaging wind gusts, and a brief
tornado or two will be the primary threats.
Timing wise, the broken line of showers and thunderstorms will
enter the western zones between 1 and 3 PM and slowly progress
east. This initial batch of showers and thunderstorms will then
clear the coast of NJ between 6 and 9 PM. With PWats rising into
the 1.5"-1.9" range (potentially record breaking values for May
27th), heavy rain and thus flash flooding continues to be a
threat with this system somewhere across the Mid-Atlantic
region. The confidence in the greatest threat area for flash
flooding remains eastern PA. The Flood Watch for Flash Flooding
remains in effect from 1 PM until midnight tonight. We are
currently forecasting widespread QPF around one inch across the
Lehigh Valley with values decreasing east towards the NJ coast.
Locally, totals up two to three inches are possible if
convection trains over the same area. SPC and WPC have
maintained the Slight Risks for severe weather and excessive
rainfall respectively for our area.
Aside from the showers and thunderstorms today, it will be a warm
and rather muggy day with dewpoints rising well into the mid to
upper 60s. Expect high temperatures in the mid 70s to upper 70s
in most areas along with mostly cloudy to overcast skies.
Southerly winds will increase into the afternoon to around 10-20
mph with gusts of 25-30 mph possible. The southerly winds will
lessen overnight and shift more to the southwest. Given the
continued stacked southerly flow regime, expect continued mostly
cloudy and muggy conditions with minimum temperatures in the
low to mid 60s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Conditions will gradually improve Saturday as the cold front pushes
offshore. The upper low will be slow to move off to the north and
east, and will lead to a few instability showers lingering,
especially over the northern half of the area through the early
afternoon period. There could be some embedded thunder with
some of these showers but nothing in the way of severe
potential. Forecast soundings suggest deep enough CAPE and dry
air aloft to support some small hail as well. The good news is
that PWATs will be quickly falling behind the front as drier air
filters into the region from the northwest. Not expecting this
to be a washout but just some nuisance-type scattered showers
and thunderstorms. Highs will be similar to Friday in the upper
70s to near 80 with upper 60s in the Poconos.
A weak secondary front will bring even drier air into the region
Saturday night as winds shift more to the northwest. This will drop
dew points into the 50s over most of the area. Into Saturday night,
we'll see seasonable lows in the upper 50s to around 60, which will
feel quite refreshing with these lower dew points.
Sunday looks to be a terrific late spring day for any outdoor plans
you may have this holiday weekend. Surface high pressure will move
directly overhead with mid-level ridging also building into the
region from the west into the afternoon. Rising 850 mb heights and
plentiful sunshine will boost afternoon highs a few degrees into the
low 80s for most, with cooler readings in the 70s along the
immediate coast and mid 70s into the Poconos and northwestern New
Jersey. With light winds turning southerly in the afternoon, we
should see a nice progression of the sea breeze boundary westward
through the day.
Continual progression of the mid- and upper-level ridge will
continue through Sunday night with mostly clear skies. This
transitions into a mild Sunday night with lows in the low to mid 60s
across the region.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Hot weather returns for the early to midweek period as an upper
level ridge builds just to the west of the area. At the
surface, high pressure will be anchored just to our south and
west through midweek. Memorial Day looks to be quite nice to
close out the holiday weekend, with mostly sunny skies, and high
temperatures in the mid to upper 80s for most. The exception
being down the shore where highs will be in the upper 70s.
Tuesday and Wednesday look to follow suit with above normal
temperatures. Expect max afternoon temperatures will be in the 90F
to 95F range with 80s in the Poconos and along near the ocean and
bays. At this point, it looks like record highs will not be
exceeded, but we will continue to monitor. The good news is that it
looks like dew points at max heating will generally be in the low to
mid 60s, resulting in heat indices staying close to the actual
temperature.
The ridge axis and associated surface high pressure look to move
offshore after Wednesday. This would indicate a return to a more
active and unsettled pattern, though confidence is low on specific
impacts. Later next week could be the next chance for active weather
after Saturday.

A Marine Dense Fog Advisory is now in effect for the NJ and DE
coastal ocean waters and Lower DE Bay. Dense fog over the mid-
Atlantic will lift north through the night, and with increasing low
level moisture, advection fog will continue through at least mid-
morning. Recent observations indicate that the fog has spread
northward into the upper portion of Delaware Bay, so the advisory
was expanded here as well. The Marine Dense Fog Advisory is in
effect until 11 AM EDT.
Otherwise, generally sub-advisory conditions across the waters
through much of the morning hours. South to southeasterly winds 10-
15 kts this morning will increase to 20-25 kts and seas building up
to 5 feet into this afternoon. The winds will gradually diminish
overnight and seas will linger around 5 feet into Saturday morning.
The Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for all ocean waters from
11 AM through Saturday morning.

Lehigh, southeastern Carbon and southwestern Northampton Counties
through 345 PM EDT...
At 308 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over
Claussville, or 9 miles west of Allentown, moving northeast at 35
mph.
HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
possible.

Allentown, Easton, Bethlehem, Emmaus, Northampton, Hellertown,
Palmerton, Slatington, Bath, Walnutport, Topton, Steuben, Neffs,
