The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

Scattered thunderstorms developed over the mid-Atlantic ahead of a cold front on April 16. The storms developed in an environment of little to no surface based instability. However, some elevated instability and cold air aloft, combined with strong frontal forcing, allowed storms to develop. Thanks to the steep lapse rates aloft, several storms produced hail. Hail was mainly sub-severe in nature, but a couple reports of hail close to one inch in diameter were received. Showers and storms moved off the coast by later in the evening of the 16th.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will cross our area this evening, then Canadian
high pressure builds in from the west later Sunday before moving
offshore on Monday. A coastal storm should affect the area
Monday night into Tuesday. High pressure will move over our area
for the middle of next week with another cold front arriving
during the late week period.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A mild to warm afternoon in progress across the region, although a
sea breeze closer to the coast is keeping it cooler there.

A strong upper-level low is forecast to shift east-southeastward
tonight across southeastern Canada, the Great Lakes and into the
Northeast. This is driving surface low pressure well to our north,
however a trailing cold front will push across our area this
evening. In addition, a weak surface low is forecast to develop
along the front and move across our area. Increasing large scale
forcing for ascent becomes more focused across the northern areas
which is closer to the incoming left exit region of a strong 500 mb
jet. This is where a more organized area of showers is expected to
move through and the PoPs are the highest there.

Additional shower and thunderstorm development is forecast to
occur this evening farther south and east along the lee side
trough as the aforementioned 500 mb jet feature arrives. Clouds
will increase eastward into this evening in advance of the cold
front. Southerly winds ahead of the cold front will quickly
shift to the northwest this evening as the front clears the
area. Much cooler and drier air will advect into the area during
the course of the night. Given the dry air moving into the
area, a clearing sky is forecast with the exception of the
Poconos where clouds may hang on or redevelopment overnight
within the northwest flow cold air advection setup. After a warm
day, it will turn noticeably colder by daybreak Sunday with
temperatures falling into the 30s and 40s. At least some wind is
expected to be maintained through the night, therefore no frost
is forecast.

As we go through Sunday, the core of the upper-level trough swings
across the area into the afternoon. Deepening low pressure into the
Canadian Maritimes combined with high pressure building across the
Great Lakes places our area within a tight pressure gradient. Cold
air advection will result in a much colder air mass, with
temperatures only rising into the 40s and 50s. The tight pressure
gradient in place along with the cold air advection will promote
deepening vertical mixing. This mixing will become enhanced by
midday as the boundary layer warms enough to steepen the low-level
lapse rates. Northwesterly winds are forecast to gust to 30 mph
during the day. The low-level air mass will be very dry with dew
points falling into the 20s and even teens. The dryness of the air
combined with the gusty wind will result in an added chill. Some
stratocumulus should develop for a time in the chilly northwesterly
flow, before dry air entrainment and some subsidence takes hold as
the upper-level trough starts to lift out toward later in the
afternoon. There may be some lake effect snow showers, however these
should remain northwest of the southern Poconos.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Clear skies and light northerly winds will set the stage for
strong radiational cooling conditions Sunday night. A Freeze
Watch is in effect for locations where the growing season has
started and temperatures have the potential to drop below 32F.

Mid-level ridging will be over the area Monday morning before
sliding offshore during the day. Meanwhile, an upper trough digs
through the Northern Plains and western Great Lakes. Surface
low pressure develops over the Great Lakes, and a secondary low
develops over the Southeast U.S and lifts to the northeast late
Monday and Monday night.

The latest guidance continues to suggest a rain event in most
locations, and there could be generous amounts of around an
inch of rain across eastern New Jersey, and 1/2 to 3/4 inch
further inland. In the southern Poconos, temperatures should be
cold enough to support a period of accumulating snow Monday
night. One to two inches of snow is possible especially in the
highest elevations.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Long range forecast looks on track per the latest model
guidance. Low pressure departs on Tuesday and high pressure
builds in from the west. After below normal temperatures into
Tuesday, temperatures rebound behind the departing high on
Wednesday. Another cold front approaches from the west and looks
to pass through the region Thursday through Thursday night with
widely scattered showers. High pressure returns to close out
the week.

.AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR ceilings with showers and thunderstorms this
evening. There will be two rounds of precipitation this evening,
with the first round forming along lee side trough across
eastern MD. This batch of thunderstorms will head northeast and
likely affect KMIV and KACY. Currently thunder exists in these
cells, but a weakening trend is forecast as instability wanes.
No thunder is forecast for KMIV and KACY. For KPHL and KILG,
thunder is ongoing now, with this second batch of precipitation
in association with a surface cold front. Towards KTTN and
KPNE, thunder looks less likely, but it's close. These showers
and isolated thunderstorms will head east this evening with a
surface cold front sweeping through the terminals. Behind the
cold front, some light rain is expected, but this should clear
rather quickly. Southwest winds around 10 kts, veering around
from the northwest around 10 knots. High confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to around 25
knots. High confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday night...VFR. NW to N winds diminishing to 5 kt or less.
High confidence.

Monday through Tuesday...VFR initially, and then sub-VFR in
rain, which may be heavy at times, Monday night through Tuesday,
Conditions improve to VFR on Tuesday. E winds 10 to 15 kt
during the day, becoming NW Monday night, then W 15 to 20 kt
with gusts up to 25 kt Tuesday. Low confidence.

Wednesday...VFR. NW winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming SW late.
Moderate confidence.

Thursday...VFR. SW winds 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
The conditions are anticipated to be below Small Craft Advisory
criteria through tonight. A gusty southerly wind this afternoon will
shift to the northwest later this evening as a cold front moves
offshore. The winds should lessen for a time, before increasing
again Sunday. This increase may start before daybreak across
Delaware Bay and the adjacent Delaware Atlantic coastal waters,
however the stronger winds should occur from about mid-morning to
late afternoon. Given a colder air mass Sunday and vertical mixing
becoming deeper, northwesterly winds are forecast to gust to around
25 knots during the day. As a result, A Small Craft Advisory has
been issued for Sunday.

Outlook...

Sunday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions (wind gusts)
early on the Atlantic coastal waters, otherwise sub-SCA
conditions.

Monday through Tuesday...A coastal low will pass through the
waters Monday night through Tuesday. A period of E winds gusting
to 25 kt possible, but strong NW winds gusting 25 to 30 kt will
develop behind the departing low on Tuesday.

Wednesday and Thursday...Sub-SCA conditions.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A very dry, but much colder, air mass will be in place Sunday.
Northwesterly winds will increase to 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30
mph. The relative humidity values are forecast to drop into the 25-
35 percent range. Some fire weather concerns are possible, however
this will depend on how much of a wetting rain occurs tonight and if
surface dew points drop lower than currently forecast during Sunday.
