Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 313 AM PDT Mon May 2 2022 .SYNOPSIS...A strong weather disturbance will bring windy and dusty conditions to the area this afternoon. A few valley rain and higher elevation snow showers are expected across far northern Nevada today along with a few thunderstorms. Showers move out of eastern Nevada Tuesday with drier and warmer conditions settling in Wednesday and Thursday. Cloud cover increases Friday with the next disturbance to bring more showers to the state over the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night. A dynamic low pressure system will move through the region today through Tuesday. A few valley rain and mountain snow showers are expected across far northern Nevada mainly along the NV/ID border later this afternoon. A few thunderstorms are expected as well. A transition to mostly snow across northeast Nevada is expected overnight into Tuesday morning as a cold front progresses eastward. Snow accumulation will be limited after sunset today across the Jarbidge Wilderness area and associated mountains. 1-4 inches are expected above 7000 feet by late Tuesday morning. Liquid equivalent precipitation will be below 0.05" in most locations except higher elevations in northern Elko county. Perhaps the more significant impact from this weather disturbance will be the strong winds that will develop later today. Southwest winds of 25-35 mph with gusts of 45-55 mph are expected across central Nevada this afternoon. Winds will shift from the southwest to west and eventually northwest this evening and overnight although advisory level winds could persist across the Ruby Mountains and eastern Elko county. Northwest flow will persist into Tuesday. Although gusty, wind speeds will not necessitate another advisory for Tuesday as of now. Temperatures will warm considerably as compared to yesterday ahead of the main trough. Highs will be around 10 degrees warmer reaching into the 60s and 70s. After upper 20s to lower 30s for lows tonight, temperatures will only manage to get into the 50s and lower 60s for most locations Tuesday. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Sunday. Upper ridging is to build over the region beginning Wednesday. This will keep weather fair and dry into Friday. The one exception to this may be on Thursday as a shortwave moves thru the PacNW. This may initiate a few isolated showers along the OR/ID border, primarily over the high terrain. Any accumulating precip will be quite minor. Look for breezy and gusty SW afternoon winds Thursday and Friday as the next upper trof approaches the region from the west. Daytime highs Wednesday look to be low 60s to mid 70s, climbing to low 70s to mid 80s for Thursday and Friday. Overnight lows are to be in the low 30s to low 40s Wednesday night, and mostly 40s Thursday and Friday nights. The next weather producer is to begin spreading valley rain and mountain snow showers across the region from the W/NW Saturday. Precip totals look to be greater across N Nevada, and portions of central Nevada may potentially remain dry. Surface winds will be windy and SW, turning NW behind the surface front and remaining windy. Snow levels look to also lower to valley levels Saturday night with any valley accumulations likely being minimal. Showers are to trend dry Sunday morning. Temperatures will cool several degrees from Friday to Saturday and remain cooler Sunday. && .AVIATION...Showers will be possible over northern Nevada today and tonight and could impact the northern taf sites. CIGs will generally remain AOA 4kft, could could briefly drop down to MVFR under heavier/steadier showers. Mountain obscurations are possible. Sct-bkn skies at ELY AOA 12kft today, then becoming sct-bkn around 4kft tonight. Just some passing high clouds at TPH. Winds and the potential for dust will be biggest concern today. Generally less than 10kts this morning becoming 20-28g30-38kts this afternoon and early evening, then decreasing tonight.
