Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
Issued by National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ
358 PM PDT Mon Mar 28 2022
.SYNOPSIS...A weather system will move into the region today
bringing cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and widespread minor to
moderate precipitation through Tuesday. A quick turnaround back
to above normal temperatures looks to return Wednesday. A weak
weather system may influence our weather late week, bringing some
slight chances of precipitation, breezy north winds and cooler
temperatures.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Tomorrow.
Main impacts associated with the weather system currently moving in
the SoCal coast will continue to be in the form of wind through
this evening. Southerly winds across the region have been gusting
to 35-45 mph with some localized areas seeing gusts over 50 mph. A
Wind Advisory will remain in effect until 7pm this evening.
Based on current trends and the latest hires models, the better
moisture and scattered showers are currently moving across western
San Bernardino County and Inyo County. This band will continue to
spread eastward through the region, moving into southern NV by
23-00Z. Based on mesoanalysis, there will be enough instability
across eastern San Bernardino, southern NV, and northwest AZ to
allow for isolated thunderstorms. Overall, precipitation amounts
are expected to be light, providing only minimal or minor impacts.
At this point, the better moisture will likely be seen across the
higher elevations, and across Mohave and Lincoln Counties, where
multiple rounds of showers are possible. Storm total rain amounts
are fairly lack-luster, with lower deserts seeing anywhere from
0.05" to 0.25" and higher elevations 0.30" to 0.50", with locally
higher amounts possible across the higher terrain in Mohave and
Lincoln County. While there was little changes in the forecast
QPF, there are quite a few variables that could lead to snow
amounts overachieving. Yes, the period of snowfall should be
fairly brief (around 6 hours), the IVT magnitude is meager, and
snow levels should be fluctuating...we also have an ideal
orographic orientation lifting parcels both dynamically and
convectively in a saturated deep moisture environment during that
time (through 06Z). We also know the NBM has trouble resolving the
complex terrain effects of the Springs, especially among its
inputs that are synoptic. As such, a Winter Weather Advisory for
the Springs is currently in effect. Admittedly, this product has
about as much chance to be cancelled as it does to verify, but the
late season snowfall could catch many commuters off guard
regardless.
Beyond the Springs, the better ingredients for precip continue to
be focused across Mohave county this evening and overnight. The
aforementioned ingredients phase most favorably after 00Z along
the CO River Valley and lead to 0.25-0.50 of precip generally
across much of the county. If this occurred during the day, might
be more concerned for heavier rain rates, but decreasing
instability into the night time hours should temper rain rates and
keep things mostly moderate.
Precip should be exiting Tuesday morning to the east with PoPs
falling below 10% CWA wide by 00Z Wednesday.
As the low weakens and moves overhead Monday night into Tuesday
morning, instability associated with the low-center may bring
some isolated lightning with some of the stronger overnight
showers. The low and associated moisture will quickly move
southeast Tuesday, leaving much of the region mostly dry by
Tuesday evening. Temperatures will be near seasonal normal for
this time of year Monday and Tuesday.
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday.
Dry, northwesterly flow will settle in over the region on Wednesday
the low pressure system clears out of the Intermountain West and
ejects into the Great Plains Region. As a result, Wednesday will
be a dry and mild day with temperatures rebounding back up to above
average values. As we head into the latter half of the week, we
turn our attention to the next system with the potential to impact
the area on Thursday and Friday. This second system is shaping up
to be more of an insider slider with relatively low moisture
associated with it. The most recent ensemble runs have this
disturbance trending further to the east, which can be seen
reflected in the PoPs from the latest run of the NBM for the
Thursday/Friday timeframe. The 15-30% PoP values have pushed
further to the northeast and are mainly in northern Mohave County
and the panhandle of Lincoln County; whereas in previous model
runs these values extended as far south and west as Las Vegas. As
this system trends further to the east, the most likely impacts
will be breezier north winds and slightly cooler, but still above
average, temperatures.
Forecast uncertainty increases as we head into the weekend with
500 mb Height Cluster Analyses showing that some flavor of
ridging is likely to set up over the West Coast this weekend.
However, it appears as though this ridging may be short lived as
some clusters are hinting at another early week system approaching
the West Coast towards the end of the weekend. Due to this
occurring at the end of the forecast period and significant
disagreements between deterministic and ensemble mean solutions,
it is too soon to determine what exact impacts, if any, may
accompany this potential system.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...A storm system approaching the area today
will result in lower clouds developing with ceilings forecast to stay
above 10 kft until late afternoon. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon and evening.
Gusty southerly winds to around 30 to 35 kts will develop later
this morning and continue through the afternoon with locally
higher gusts possible near any shower or thunderstorm activity.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...An approaching storm system will produce gusty south
to southwest winds across the region today with gusts up to 40
kts possible in northwest Arizona and southern Nevada. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop late this
afternoon over southeast California then spread east into southern
Nevada and northwest Arizona during the late afternoon and
evening hours. Ceilings could lower to 4-6 kft AGL at KBIH and
KDAG.
