Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 134 PM PDT Tue Jun 28 2022 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure in control bringing above normal temperatures temperatures area wide. It will also bring elevated fire weather risks for northern NV tonight and Wednesday with breezy winds. Also, as monsoonal moisture is lifted into Central Nevada look for chances of isolated dry thunderstorms, and maybe a wet thunderstorm or two this week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night Nevada will be under the influence of a large subtropical ridge of high pressure leading to warm conditions. Mid-level monsoonal moisture will filter into Central Nevada tonight and Wednesday which will lead to some potential for Isolated dry thunderstorms, and with PWAT values around 0.5” to 0.8” an Isolated wet thunderstorm or two is also possible. A trough located off the Pacific Northwest coast will try and push onshore over the Canadian maritime this will lead to a tightening pressure gradient in the large scale SW flow over Western Nevada which will bring elevated WSW winds tonight and stronger flows Tuesday afternoon. The primary concern is for for potential fire weather impacts for winds and low relative humidity tonight and Wednesday for northern Lander, northern Eureka, Elko and Humboldt Counties. At this time fire weather headlines are not anticipated as conditions while elevated, will not meet criteria in terms of timing and duration and fuels remain borderline. Temperatures will remain above normal with highs in the low 90s to low 100s, and overnight lows falling into the middle 50s to mid 60s. .LONG TERM...Thursday through Tuesday. A lobe of residual monsoon moisture along with ample daytime heating will result in a few high based showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly over the Great Basin National Park area Thursday afternoon. Otherwise, a dry and hot pattern will persist through the remainder of the week. An approaching low pressure trough will bring additional wind and cloud cover to the area over the weekend but not much in terms precipitation which could cause elevated fire weather conditions. Temperatures will remain in the 90s through Saturday before a cold front moves through bringing temperatures down to the 80s starting Sunday. Lows will be in the 50s with some 40s showing up by Monday morning. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at all terminals and across the silver state through Wednesday. A moderate west- southwest wind will develop across the state Wednesday afternoon. High based convection is expected this afternoon across portions of northern Nye and White Pine counties with limited terminal impacts. Unseasonably warm temperatures are causing increased density altitudes at all terminals. && .FIRE WEATHER...High pressure is in control bringing warm temperatures this week. However, an upper trough over British Columbia will lead to breezy WSW winds with a down slope component Tonight and Wednesday. This will create elevated fire weather risks for zones 437, 438, 469, and northern parts of 424. After Wednesday winds lessen, reducing the threat.
