.SYNOPSIS...
Mild temperatures through Wednesday will climb further Thursday
and Friday, with record high temperatures possible by Friday.
It turns cooler and breezier over the weekend before temperatures
fall well below normal early next week. Rain and snow shower
chances increase early next week with low pressure settling
overhead.

.DISCUSSION...
Winds have increased today with thermal gradients intensifying
due to Basin heating and the mixing down of stronger winds aloft
(40-55 kts at 700 mb) ahead of a cold front working into northern
California. So far, valley/slope gusts have been mostly in the
25-40 mph range, with wind prone areas along Highway 395/I-580
seeing gusts in the 30-45 mph (locally to 50 mph). Stronger winds
have been noted across northern Washoe and Pershing counties and
in the Surprise Valley where gusts have been 35-55 mph, with one
gust to 61 mph at the Cedarville AGRIMET. The winds are bringing
rough waters on area lakes with lake wind advisories through the
evening on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.
A wind advisory remains in effect into the evening for areas
north of Mono and Mineral/southern Lyon counties. Winds for most
areas may not increase much more if at all from what we are
currently experiencing but there is still the potential for gusts
45-55 mph (down from earlier expectations) in wind-prone areas,
mainly north of Highway 50. Meanwhile, exposed ridgetop winds
are expected to gust 50-90 mph into early Tuesday in the
northern/central Sierra and northeastern California. Despite
sustained winds of 15-20 mph, locally to 25 mph, blowing dust has
somewhat surprisingly not been much of an issue downwind from
Basin playas per freeway/highway cams. If winds have not been
sufficient to get large amounts of dust going so far, any dust is
likely to be only a localized issue into early evening.
Precip-wise, some light rain showers remain possible into the
evening in far northeastern California and northwestern Nevada.
As the cold front passes through that area tonight, some very
light snow showers are possible above 6500-7000 feet in the Warner
Range and higher peaks of northern Washoe County. However, little
or no accumulation is expected, especially on paved surfaces.
Tuesday, a modest surface high builds into northern Nevada for a
switch to northerly flow in valleys. High temperatures are
expected to be fairly similar to today given shallow cold air
advection at best (and then only north of I-80). The ridge will
continue to build over our region through the workweek, leading to
a sharp 15-25 degree above average jump Thursday and Friday.
The ridge axis building over the region will bring near, to
possibly above record temperatures to the region by Thursday, and
especially Friday as afternoon westerly winds develop for maximum
mixing. Daytime high temperatures will rise to the upper 70s to
mid 80s in western Nevada and up to around 70 for Sierra valleys.
High pressure this week is forecast to quickly be replaced by a
developing low pressure over the western U.S. late in the weekend
and into early next week. Latest simulations have the low pressure
dropping into the Great Basin with a mostly overland trajectory,
which would limit the amount of precipitation.
Temperatures may cool dramatically by early next week as colder air
moves back over the region. Highs in the valleys may return to the
low 50s with highs in the Sierra back to the low 40s. With an
upper low hanging out overhead and the stronger spring sun,
instability shower, and even isolated thunderstorm, chances will
increase by next Monday. -Snyder

A weather system moving into the Pacific Northwest will push a
cold front into far northeast CA and northwest NV this evening,
with flow turning northerly on Tuesday as a surface high builds
into northern NV. Surface winds into evening will gust generally
into the 20-30 kt range, locally to 35-40 kts north of Highway 50.
Expect turbulence and localized LLWS in the lee of the Sierra into
evening, with turbulence continuing into Tuesday with west-
northwest FL100 winds 40-55 kts. A few light showers will be
possible near the Oregon border through this evening with higher
terrain obscuration.
Winds will subside during the late evening and overnight. High
pressure builds over the region with generally light winds and near
record temperatures for the end of the work week. -Snyder
