.SYNOPSIS...Strong winds across northern Nevada continue into this
evening, but start to taper off during the overnight hours. Gusty
conditions return to northeastern Nevada tomorrow morning, but
wont be as strong as today. A few light showers skirt across Elko
county tonight, mainly in the mountains.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night
A strong jet streak continues to transverse our region and strong,
gusty winds continue into this evening coupled with a few light
showers in northeastern Nevada. Expect showers to taper off before
sunrise tomorrow morning. Snow levels should be high enough to
keep accumulating snow out of any higher valleys, but an inch or
two of new snow on the tops of the Ruby Mountains and highest
elevations in northern Elko county is not out of the question.
Although winds weaken overnight, gusty conditions return to
northeastern Nevada tomorrow morning. Sustained winds are expected
to be around 20 to 25 mph with gusts approaching 35 mph. Even
stronger winds are possible in the mountaintops, but this will be
well above any roadways or towns. Southern Lander, southern
Eureka, and northwestern Nye counties also see gusty winds around
15 to 20 mph and may occasionally gust close to 35 mph. Elsewhere,
winds remain breezy but weaker than previously.
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday.
Ensembles continue to agree that a strong upper level ridge will
pass across the Great Basin region. This ridge in turn will cause
fair weather across the silver state. A warming trend is likely to
set up and last all the way to Friday. This will most likely see
the temperatures rise into the 80s which is well above normal.
The weekend is still likely to have a pattern shift with the ridge
departing and trough moving into the region. Uncertainty remain on
the placement and strength of the trough. This uncertainty make it
hard to pin down moisture amounts this system will have.
Regardless at least some moisture should be present which in turn
would allow for at least light showers. A reversal in the
temperature trend is likely with highs falling back to near
normal (50s and 60s) for the weekend.
&&
.AVIATION...A weather system is impacting all terminals today and
into early Tuesday. Very strong winds at all terminals are
occurring with the passage of this system. Winds will be
primarily a westerly direction through the rest of the afternoon
and evening. Turbulence at all elevations, mountain waves, cross
winds, and low level wind shear are all likely today across the
silver state. The strong winds will pick up dust which can lead to
MVFR and even IFR conditions at times. Slant visibility can also
be severely reduced in heavier dust clouds downstream of dust
sources. This will cause intermittent low cloud decks around 4K ft
AGL that can cause some mountain obscuration. While unlikely,
showers are possible with this system north of I-80.
