Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 306 AM PDT Thu Apr 28 2022 .SYNOPSIS...A weather disturbance and cold front passing through the region will result in gusty winds, areas of blowing dust and some shower and thunderstorm activity mainly along and north of I-80. Winds subside Friday with another quick moving trough expected to enter the state Saturday. Central Nevada will remain quite dry with showers primarily in northern Nevada Saturday into Saturday night. Fair weather returns next week as high pressure moves into the region. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night An upper-level trough and surface cold front will move through the region today bringing showers to the northern portions of Nevada along with widespread gusty winds from the west and areas of blowing dust across central Nevada. As winds increase late this morning and afternoon, dust kicked up from dry lake bads in western Nevada should begin to make its way eastward into Lander, Eureka and Elko county this afternoon. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph are likely before diminishing somewhat this evening after frontal passage. The strong winds and anticipated dust support the wind and dust advisories in place across much of Nevada. Total precipitation across the northern tier of the state is not expected to be significant with some of the higher terrain and mountains receiving around 0.10" of liquid equivalent. That will translate to a couple inches at most of snow in the mountains north of I-80 to the Idaho border. Friday will be a bit cooler with continued northwest flow at the surface. Highs will still reach the upper 50s to 60s in most areas after a mild start in the mid to upper 30s. Freezing temperatures return tonight and Friday night as cloud cover diminishes with upper 20s to low 30s. .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday A series of quick moving troughs will dominate the weather pattern into the middle of next week. A weak trough moving through the area Saturday will bring cloudy conditions and isolated rain showers to northern Nevada. QPF amounts in the mountains will range from 0.01 to 0.03 inches. Sunday, a stronger trough will move through northern Nevada resulting in rain showers for Elko and Humboldt counties; highest QPF in the mountains. There is a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms in northeastern Nevada Sunday afternoon as the trough crosses the area. Most of central Nevada will be dry this weekend. Highs both days will range from the 60s/70s with lows at Sunday and Monday morning in the 30s. Monday, a low pressure could drop down from the Pacific Northwest bringing another round of showers to northern Nevada. There remain differences in its exact track but right now, models are leaning toward the highest QPF amounts remaining in Idaho. Additionally, windy conditions are possible Monday afternoon and evening with gusts ranging from 20 to 30mph; highest in northeastern Nevada. On the backside of the trough, northwesterly winds could bring some scattered snow showers to high elevations Tuesday. Highs early next week will range from the 50s to 70s; highest in central Nevada. Lows will be in the 30s. A ridge of high pressure builds in for the end of next week resulting in dry conditions for northern and central Nevada and highs in the 70s. && .AVIATION...An appreciable weather disturbance moving through the region today will generate a few aviation hazards. West winds with gusts of up to 40 kts are expected this afternoon across the I-80 corridor. KPTH will likely see gusty winds this evening as wind direction shifts from the west to northwest. Rain showers and a few thunderstorms will be limited to northern Nevada and should not significantly impact KWMC, KBAM and KEKO. However, dust could be impactful this afternoon reducing visibility to around 1SM at times at KWMC, KBAM and possibly as far east as KEKO. Conditions overall will improve tonight suspended dust settles and cloud cover decreases. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
