.DISCUSSION...
Tonight through Tuesday night...
Upper trough moving through the region today will continue to
bring areas of showers and thunderstorms through the evening.
A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible over southeast
Montana this afternoon/evening with modest instability and shear
in place. Latest guidance has shifted the corridor of best
instability a bit farther east into the Dakotas, and latest SPC
outlook reflects this, with a marginal risk of severe weather
across the east. The upper trough will lift north and east of the
area tonight, causing showers and thunderstorms to gradually
decrease. Flow turns more zonal over the area on Tuesday as the
aforementioned trough exits the region. Winds will be breezy on
the backside of the system across the east, while some weak ascent
sliding through the area may provide enough forcing for a few
showers or thunderstorms over the southern mountains.
High temperatures will continue to run on the cool side on
Tuesday, with highs in the upper 60s to 70s. Lows tonight and
Tuesday night will range from the 40s to lower 50s. STP
Wednesday through Monday...
Extended period will start off generally warm and dry as zonal
flow over the region promotes better mixing and less cloud cover.
Weather turns more unsettled by the end of the work week as a
blocking pattern upstream puts the area under cyclonic northwest
flow. A couple different waves dropping through the region look to
bring shower and thunderstorm chances Friday and into the weekend.
Unlike previous systems over the past week, these systems do not
appear to have connections to high moisture regions.
Temperatures are forecast in the 80s Wednesday and Thursday, with
a few locations pushing 90 degrees on Thursday. The shortwave
progged to arrive on Friday looks to drop temperatures back into
the 70s through the weekend. Warmer temperatures return on Monday
with highs into the 80s. Low temperatures in the 40s and 50s are
forecast most nights. STP

Scattered showers and thunderstorms today, most concentrated along
the mountains and foothills and east of Rosebud county. Expect
local MVFR conditions near precipitation areas. Gusty winds and
small hail can be expected with most thunderstorms today, with an
isolated severe storm possible over SE Montana into the western
Dakotas. Westerly winds gusting to 25kts expected this afternoon,
diminishing late this evening. Convection will diminish this
evening with a few showers continuing through the early morning
hours. Can't rule out a few areas of stratus/fog developing
overnight into Tuesday morning, especially along the foothills and
areas that see significant precipitation today. Chambers

At 1256 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 17
miles east of Lodge Grass, or 31 miles north of Sheridan, moving
northeast at 30 mph.
HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph and nickel size hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
possible.

miles south of Lodge Grass, or 32 miles northwest of Sheridan, moving
northeast at 40 mph.
