Drought conditions began to worsen over the western portions of the southwest Missouri Ozarks during the month and started to spread east by the end of September. By the last week of September, the US Drought Monitor had designated around 58 percent of the area as being in moderate drought (D1) to significant drought (D4). Across the Ozarks, the month started with 11 counties in Severe Drought (D2) to Extreme Drought (D3), by the end of the month 12 counties were in (D2) Severe drought or greater with Significant Drought (D4) in 6 counties. The primary impacts of the drought continued to occurred in the agricultural communities. Hay growth was impacted along with reports of crop failures, dry stock ponds and low flows on some streams and rivers.

Through Tonight: Expect a quiet and seasonable evening across the
region has with high pressure nearby. Some scattered high level
clouds move through the region overnight, with overnight lows in
the 60s, and even a few upper 50s across the the Eastern Ozarks.

Thursday: NBM guidance supports high temperatures in the middle
to upper 80s. While most areas are expected to remain dry; there
is a very low end chance of a stray shower or rumble of thunder
across southern Missouri on Thursday afternoon.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
Issued at 200 PM CDT Wed Aug 31 2022

Friday-Monday: A strong upper level ridge remains in place across
the western CONUS through the weekend, while weak shortwaves
transition through the upper level flow east of the ridge. Modest
moisture return through the weekend with weak forcing will result
in low precipitation chances (20-30%). Expectations are for this
activity to be primarily diurnally driven and scattered in
nature. Meanwhile, little spread exists through the weekend in NBM
temperatures, with daily highs in the middle to upper 80s, and
overnight lows in the 60s.

Beyond Tuesday: A pattern change may be on the horizon heading
into the middle to late part of next week. Guidance continues to
vary, but the general consensus is for the western ridge to break
down. As the occurs, a potentially more active pattern may
develop over the central CONUS. Stay tuned to forecasts into next
week.

High pressure will shift east of the area with surface winds
becoming southeasterly overnight. High clouds should spread into
the area tonight into Thursday in advance of the next shortwave
which will approach from the west. Some scattered convection will
be possible during the evening on Thursday and have included some
prob30 groups at SGF and JLN.
