.SYNOPSIS...The late August - early September heat wave is
underway. These hot and dry conditions are expected to continue
across most of the region through the Labor Day weekend as a dome of
high pressure settles over the Desert Southwest. Heat-related
impacts are of particular concern with the upcoming holiday weekend,
so extreme caution is advised when recreating outdoors.

.UPDATE...As the ridge of high pressure shifts westward,
temperatures over Mohave County will cool slightly, reducing their
chances of reaching afternoon or overnight warm temperature records
and dropping their HeatRisk from "High" to "Moderate" due to the
decreased risk of heat-related illness. As such, the Excessive Heat
Warning for much of Mohave County has been allowed to expire
tonight. However, the Excessive Heat Warning will continue through
Sunday for the Colorado River Valley zones that are in Mohave
County, along with southern Nevada and southeastern California
(excluding the mountains) as temperatures range 8-12 degrees above
seasonal averages. No changes have been made to the forecast this
evening, as it looks to be in good shape.

.DISCUSSION...Today through next week.
Overall, not a significant change in forecast expectations other
than a high confidence forecast for excessive heat has become very
high. As of the 12Z GEFS/GEM/EC runs, very little meaningful
difference was seen in cluster analysis in the H5 means. There
wasn't much as of 00Z either, but where there was, was over the
weekend and whether or not further deepening of the western CONUS
ridge would occur. This seems to now be agreed upon across all
three means and as a result, Saturday seems to be the best
opportunity for area records to be at least tied, if not exceeded.
So, while Excessive Heat Warnings have been out for several days for
much of the area, the northern zones were previously left out as the
aforementioned ensemble variance resulted in slightly lower
temperatures for Esmeralda/Nye/Lincoln in the NBM. Now that isn't
the case, and there is increasing confidence that heat risk will
become an issue for the population areas in Lincoln/Nye/Esmeralda
such as Goldfield, Tonopah, Pioche, and Caliente. Thus, we have
expanded the Excessive Heat Warning to include these counties
beginning tomorrow and through Sunday in line with the rest of the
area currently under the warning. Moving into next week, a slight
decrease of overall average temperatures is possible but may not be
enough to lower the heat risk to the point of letting the warning
expire, so if this trend of stubborn high pressure continues with
further runs, an expansion of the current warning will be needed
through at least Labor Day, if not further.
There are non-zero chances for precip over the weekend for southern
Mohave County but most of the members contributing to this
possibility are on the opposite end of the PDF (minority cluster)
than the dominant high scenario. So confidence is quite low that any
impacts would result from precip, but if they were to, they'd be
confined to areas south of the I-40 corridor.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Hot temperatures and dry conditions will continue across
most of the region into the Labor Day weekend as a dome of high
pressure settles over the southwest. While winds are expected to
stay well below critical thresholds, area fuels are quickly
experiencing drying with this prolonged heat and are expected to
worsen heading into next week. Very little chance for wetting
rains are forecast outside of northwest Arizona through next week.

.CLIMATE...Numerous locations have the potential to tie or break
record high and warm low temperatures through Labor Day Weekend.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Minimal impacts expected today and
tomorrow due to high pressure and light winds. Typical diurnal
wind patterns expected. High temperatures will be the most
impactful weather concern for the terminal through the weekend
most likely, with highs well above 100 forecast. Temperatures will
exceed 100 roughly between 17Z-19Z each afternoon and fall below
between 04-06Z.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Other than hot conditions across the area, only
partly cloudy skies and generally light winds across the region
will be expected for all area terminals. Little aviation impacts
expected other than heat.
