Several upper level disturbances and an arctic air outbreak resulted in a prolonged period of heavy lake effect effect and synoptic snow. The most prolific snow was reported in Gobles in Van Buren county where 28 inches was reported. Grand Rapids was also hard hit with several locations in and near the city reporting 24 to 27 inches of snow from the 17th through the 20th. Areas from Kalamazoo north to Grand Rapids and off to the west were the hardest hit by heavy lake effect snow. The combined effects of snow and falling temperatures resulted in snow covered to icy road conditions and numerous accidents and school closing and event cancellations across southwestern lower Michigan from the 17th-20th.
