Another period of excessive heat occurred across southern Illinois. Heat indices peaked around 110 degrees on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. The peak heat index at Carbondale was 108 on the 22nd, 105 on the 23rd, and 107 on the 24th. Another large 500 mb high became stubbornly persistent across the southern states, from the Four Corners region to the Southeast. Underneath this high, daily high temperatures were in the lower to mid 90's. Overnight lows were mostly in the mid 70's.
