The episode as NWS ILX wrote it up.

An Arctic cold front pushed through central Illinois on December 22nd, causing temperatures to plummet from early morning highs in the 30s to evening lows from zero to ten below zero. As weak waves of low pressure tracked along the front, light snow developed across the area...with accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches. Despite the overall light snowfall, strong winds gusting in excess of 40mph created considerable blowing and drifting snow which led to near zero visibility at times...particularly in open, rural locations. The combination of falling snow, blowing snow, low visibility, and extremely cold temperatures caused major disruption to commerce and travel across central Illinois. Numerous schools and businesses closed due to the inclement weather and several traffic accidents occurred as roads became snow-covered and slick. In addition, scattered power outages were reported.

Winter weather impacts arrive today, continuing through Saturday
as a strong winter storm lifts into the Great Lakes Region.
Primary hazards include 2-4" of new snow, strong winds, blowing
snow, and dangerously cold wind chills. A Winter Storm Warning
goes into effect today and continues through Saturday morning.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)
ISSUED AT 356 AM CST Thu Dec 22 2022

A winter storm will take aim at the area today, bringing winter
weather impacts through Saturday. A Winter Storm Warning remains in
effect for all 35 of our counties from this morning/afternoon into
Saturday morning with the following hazards of concern:

1) 2-4" of snowfall with most of this falling this morning
through this evening.

2) Strong northwest winds with gusts of 35 to 50 mph tonight
through Friday night. These winds will lead to areas of blowing
and drifting snow, and possibly near whiteout conditions in open
areas even after the snow has ended.

3) Dangerously cold wind chills as low as -15 to -35 through
Saturday morning.

Surface analysis early this morning depicts a ~1008 mb surface low
over the Texas panhandle with surface ridging/an arctic cold front
stretched northward into the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Further
west a nearly 1050 mb anomalously strong surface high is sinking
into the northern Plains states. A mid-level trough will dig into
the country's midsection today as the Polar jet dives southward into
the Midwest. The trough will become negatively tilted by this
evening, sending the aforementioned surface lifting northward toward
the Great Lakes Region. The surface low will rapidly deepens as
it approaches the eastern Great Lakes on Friday, before occluding
over southeastern Canada this weekend. The cold front associated
with the low will quickly plow through the area today, rapidly
dropping temperatures and bringing accumulating snow from west to
east from this morning into this evening. The front is currently
positioned in eastern Iowa/northern Missouri and will approach
western parts of the CWA around daybreak.

QPF amounts haven't changed all too much, though a slight uptick by
a few hundredths of an inch has been noted in eastern parts of
the state. Surface temperatures this morning range from the upper
20s to middle 30s and are expected to stay pretty stable over the
next several hours ahead of the frontal passage aside from western
IL. Precipitation may start off as rain or brief freezing
rain/drizzle directly ahead of the front before transitioning to
snow as temperatures sharply cool with the frontal passage. Where
rain does start as the initial precipitation type in eastern
parts of the state, some concern for a flash freeze setup with any
moisture left on roadways.

Snow amounts have stayed pretty consistent the last few forecast
cycles with generally 2-4" expected areawide. The NBM probabilities
fall in line nicely with current forecast snowfall amounts with a
80%+ chance of at least 1" and a 60-70% chance of 2" over most
areas. Although snow is not expected to be prolonged or really heavy
for that matter, there could periods of moderate to briefly heavy
snowfall rates later this morning into afternoon behind the frontal
passage where decent low-level frontogenesis is progged to setup.
The HREF highlights generally 0.50-0.75" rates/hour with the
frontogenetic band, though 1"/hour rates appear pretty low. This
paired with strengthening northwest winds/blowing snow could bring
visibility reductions of 1 mile or less at times. Snowfall lightens
up late tonight, but light snow or flurries look to continue through
at least Friday night as we remain under the influence of cyclonic
flow. Any additional snow accumulation through Friday night should
be minimal.

Winds ramp up behind the front, with the strongest gusts arriving
this evening through Friday night as the pressure gradient becomes
pinched between the strengthening low and strong surface high
further west. Forecast soundings and ensemble means show peak wind
gusts of around 40-45 mph arriving late tonight and continuing
through Friday, gradually lessening some by Friday night. Winds of
this magnitude will easily be able to blow and drift the fresh
snowfall, creating potentially blizzard-like conditions at times in
open areas. This will likely make it very difficult if not
impossible for road crews to keep roads clear of snow/drifts. This
will result in travel difficulty through at least Friday night,
though impacts may linger into the daytime hours of Saturday as well.

Much colder temperatures arrive later today and stick around through
the weekend. The coldest period of time will be tonight through
Saturday when overnight lows dip down into the single digits below
zero with highs only in the single digits to teens. The strong winds
and bitterly cold temperatures will create dangerously cold wind
chills through Saturday morning. Values will be as cold as -15 to
-35 with the coldest period being overnight tonight.

Although snow amounts will not be heavy, all the previously
mentioned winter weather hazards will create dangerous if not nearly
impossible travel conditions at times leading into the holiday
weekend. A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect this
morning/afternoon to account for these impacts, continuing through
at least Saturday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

Strong high pressure over the northern Plains will begin to spread
into the Ohio River Valley this weekend, weakening as it does so.
Cooler than normal temperatures stick around through early next
week, but will start to exhibit a gradual warming trend by Monday as
upper ridging builds over the eastern CONUS. In fact, above normal
temperatures appear likely by Wednesday or Thursday of next week
with the Climate Prediction Center highlighting warmer than normal
temperatures possibly sticking around through the New Year.
Precipitation chances in the long term period will be driven by
clipper systems with one of note possibly bringing a quick shot of
light snow as early as Monday.

A strengthening winter storm will send an arctic front through the
area today, bringing snow, strong northwest winds, and blowing snow.
The front will approach western TAF sites later this morning
spreading into eastern parts of the state by early this afternoon.
Periods of moderate to briefly heavy snow will occur from late
morning through early evening, reducing visibilities below 1 mile
and ceilings below 1k ft. Strong northwest winds develop behind the
front with gusts increasing to near 40 kts overnight. The strong
winds will lead to blowing snow and continued visibility
reductions through at least the end of the TAF period. Strong
winds will persist through Friday night, with BLSN possibly being
an issue through Saturday morning.
