Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID

.DISCUSSION...An upper level low positioned along the PacNW coast
has brought dynamic southwest flow over the forecast area today.
Persistent strong thunderstorms developed this afternoon over
east-central Oregon, as well as showers and thunderstorms for the
western Magic Valley. Hi-res models keep scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the area through the overnight/early
Sunday morning period, though lower dewpoints present in the far
southeast Oregon and southwest Idaho valleys may favor virga over
measurable rainfall. Models continue to suggest the regeneration
of strong thunderstorms in east Oregon and far west-central Idaho
Sunday afternoon/evening where the best instability will be
located. Main threats with thunderstorms will be cloud-to-ground
lightning, gusty outflow winds, blowing dust, and small hail. No
updates to the current forecast.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR. Scattered virga/showers and isolated
thunderstorms overnight. Then, strong thunderstorm development
mainly over eastern Oregon and far west-central Idaho Sunday
afternoon/evening. Storms will be capable of producing gusty
erratic winds up to 30-45 kt and small hail. Surface winds outside
of thunderstorms: variable 5-15 kt. Then, SW to NW 5-15 kt with
gusts up to 20-30 kt Sunday afternoon. Winds aloft at 10k feet
MSL: SW 15-25 kt.

SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night...
Persistent troughing surrounding a closed upper low off the
Washington coast will continue to dominate the weather pattern, and
save much of the Pacific Northwest from more excessive heat
associated with the typical summertime ridge centered over the
Plains. With fast southwest flow aloft positioned over the region,
and precipitable water values increasing to around 0.8" (90th
percentile for this time of year), at least slight chances of
showers and thunderstorms will be possible through Sunday. Visible
satellite imagery shows developing convection into the Magic Valley
this afternoon. By later tonight, a tightening height gradient aloft
will contribute to strengthening mid-level diffluent flow into
southwest Idaho this morning, and may result in a band of showers
and perhaps a few thunderstorms into Sunday morning across the
Treasure Valley. High-res ensemble guidance shows re-development of
thunderstorms accompanying another impulse Sunday afternoon and
evening across southeastern Oregon developing east-northeast towards
the west-central mountains, with perhaps even greater coverage of
showers and thunderstorms than on Saturday. SPC has this area in a
marginal risk of severe hail and wind on Sunday.
Otherwise, a significant cooling trend will begin Sunday and last
into Monday, as high temperatures in the 80s return to most areas.
In fact, NBM guidance has trended slightly cooler for Monday, with
only 81 degrees now forecast for Boise - which is 8 degrees below
normal for the date. This is in response to the inland progression
of the aforementioned upper low into Washington, and subsequent mid-
level height falls over the region. Cannot rule out more showers
into Monday as well, especially for the west-central mountains.
Winds will increase on Sunday across far southwest Idaho and
southeast Oregon, with even locally stronger gusts possible
elsewhere in association with thunderstorm outflows.
LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday...Isolated showers and
thunderstorms will continue on Tuesday as a low pressure system is
stationed over WA. Southwest flow aloft will then return as a strong
ridge builds over the desert southwest and and the trough
retrogrades along the Pacific Northwest coast. Temperatures will be
around 5 degrees above normal during the extended period as the
strong upper level ridge and hottest temperatures remains to our
south and east. A couple of shortwaves may move through the
southwest flow, bringing showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and
Thursday afternoons, otherwise expect dry conditions and hotter
temperatures Friday and Saturday.
