Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Miami FL 332 PM EDT Sun May 15 2022 ...Some Strong Storms Possible Late Tonight/Early Monday Morning Southeast areas And Again Monday Afternoon East Coast Metro Areas... ...Coastal Flood Advisory Beaches of Palm Beach County... .SHORT TERM (Now through Monday Night)... (This Afternoon into this evening)... A mid to upper trough of low pressure will remain over the Gulf of Mexico through tonight, as a surface ridge of high pressure remains over the Bahamas extending westward into Florida Peninsula. This will keep a south southwest steering flow over South Florida bringing in tropical moisture to the region. Therefore, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon with the best coverage over the interior and east coast metro areas. A mid level short wave will also be moving around the base of the mid to upper level trough and through South Florida this afternoon into the early evening hours, as a 50 to 100 kt jet moves through South Florida. This will lead to some strong to even isolated severe storms this afternoon into the early evening hours over the eastern areas of the region. The primary impacts will be hail, gusty winds, locally heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning strikes. Cannot rule out an isolated weak tornado with the strong to isolated severe storms especially where the sea breezes collide. (Tonight Into Monday)...The storms should dissipate this evening over South Florida due to the lost of heating of the day. However, another mid level short wave is forecast to move around the base of the mid to upper level trough over the Gulf of Mexico tonight and through South Florida on Monday morning. At the same time, the outflow from the showers and thunderstorms from Cuba will be moving north northeast into the southeastern areas of South Florida. This will allow for another round of showers and thunderstorms late tonight into Monday morning for the southeastern areas of South Florida during this time frame. A third round of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will then develop Monday afternoon over the interior areas and push eastward into the east coast metro areas due to the south southwest steering flow over South Florida. The 500 mb temperatures will remain cold over South Florida tonight into Monday around -10 to -12C. This will allow for some of the thunderstorms late tonight into Monday morning and again Monday afternoon to become strong to even severe. Primary impacts will be hail, gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning strikes. .LONG TERM(Tuesday through Saturday Night)... Tuesday-Wednesday: A residual 500mb shortwave over Central Florida will be merging with a strong upper level cyclone over southern Canada. This will return the area to more zonal upper level flow beginning Tuesday afternoon and allow high pressure to begin to take hold again. Model soundings indicate moderate instability and lingering deep level moisture with PWATs approaching 1.6 inches, so afternoon seabreeze convection is likely to contintinue on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, though with upper level support departing, activity should be more sporadic and weaker than on Monday though an isolated strong storm cannot be ruled out. Thursday-Saturday: Sfc high pressure builds back into the region keeping prevailing flow light. This will allow sea breezes along the east and west coasts to dominate the development of any afternoon thunderstorms through the end of the week. Increasing moisture is likely through the end of the week with PWATs approaching 2 inches by Saturday. This will likely lead to increasing coverage of convection by the end of the period. Temperatures will be toasty through the period but Wednesday and Thursday will be the hottest days with highs in the mid-90s across inland areas with low 90s along the coasts. Maximum heat indices will be in the upper 90s and could even approach 100 degrees as well. && .AVIATION(18Z TAFS)... VFR prevails through the period with multiple periods of VCTS/VCSH expected at all sites. Southeast winds continue through this evening and will go light and variable overnight. Thunderstorms across east coast sites this afternoon and primary activity should diminish by 02Z. A second round of showers and isolated thunder possible at east coast sites beginning around 08Z and could continue through the afternoon tomorrow. VCSH included in the TAFs for the morning activity into the afternoon tomorrow though will likely be upgraded to VCTS with future updates. && .MARINE... The winds will remain south to southeast at 15 knots or less over the local waters of South Florida. This will keep the seas at 2 feet or less in both the Atlantic and Gulf waters of South Florida. Therefore, boating conditions looks good outside of any showers or thunderstorms through middle of this week. .BEACHES... The tides along the beaches of Palm Beach County are running about 1 to 1.25 feet above normal and about 1 foot above normal along rest of the east coast beaches of South Florida due to the full moon phase. These tides will continue to run above normal through middle of this week due to the full moon phase. Therefore, an Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for the east coast beaches of south Florida except for the beaches of Palm Beach County where an Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect. The threat of rip currents along the east coast beaches should continue to slowly decrease through middle of this week as the winds will continue to slowly decrease along the beaches. Report received via Nextdoor of golf ball size hail in The Redland in the area of SW 187 Avenue and SW 190 Street. Broken tree branches were also reported.
Several reports received via Nextdoor of tree and fence damage in The Redland extending from SW 187 Avenue and SW 244 Street northward to SW 187 Avenue and SW 190 Street, and extending as far west as SW 197 Avenue between SW 242 Street and SW 192 Street. Time is estimated based on radar data. Hail ranging from pea to golf size was also reported in this area.
Off-duty NWS employee reported dime to penny size hail in West Kendall near Kendall Drive and SW 172 Avenue.
