What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

Several severe mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) passed mostly west and southwest of the eastern mid-Atlantic on June 13 and 14. The majority of severe weather associated with these systems remained over the Ohio Valley and Southeast. A couple of areas of convection did make it further east on the morning of June 14. While instability was limited due in part to unfavorable diurnal timing, a few instances of damaging winds occurred over the eastern mid-Atlantic.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front continues to sag southward across the area this
morning, with a wave of low pressure moving along the front to our
south later today. High pressure will build over the region later
today and through Wednesday. Low pressure will move to our north
into Thursday with a warm front lifting through the region during
the day followed by a cold front Thursday night into Friday. High
pressure will gradually build eastward across the Great Lakes
through the weekend as low pressure occludes over northern New
England. A wave of low pressure may move along a front to our west
into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The line of thunderstorms that moved along the Mason-Dixon Line
and then across Wilmington and Philly earlier this morning has
now tracked off the coast. Winds just off the surface were
sufficient enough to necessitate a couple warnings, but
thankfully they didn't fully mix down to the surface. Max winds
gusts were generally in the 30 to 40 mph range. At 930 am, more
thunderstorms were moving across the Chesapeake and onto the
Eastern shore.

A frontal boundary has been sinking southward through our
region. While not overly strong, the front has been rather
well-defined, with a notable moisture gradient as well as a
sharp wind shift to northeast behind it. The boundary has been
trackable by radar at times as well. The front should make a
little more southward progress through the day and likely clear
the CWA entirely by day's end.

The southward progress of the front will have significant
implications on today's forecast. For several days, it has been well
advertised that the mid-level pattern of northwest flow around the
periphery of central US ridging would be favorable for MCS events
over the East. Indeed, at least three long-lived, severe MCS's have
been observed in the Midwest/Ohio Valley region over the past 18
hours, with a number of highly impressive wind gusts observed and
widespread damage and power outages. However, a combination of
satellite/radar trends and the latest CAM guidance suggests this
will largely not translate into our region. There are a couple of
reasons for this. First off, diurnal timing is unfavorable for
severe weather. The MCS's to our west and southwest have already
weakened considerably from their peaks. Continued trends of overall
weakening, and/or a preference for elevated as opposed to surface
based storms, should continue through the diurnal instability
minimum. Next, the southward progress of the frontal boundary means
that the better moisture and instability have mostly shifted south
of our region, and what remains of the current MCS's will tend to
continue tracking along that gradient, keeping them mostly to our
south. A simple interpolation of radar trends strongly suggests any
remaining severe convective activity will miss to our southwest,
with CAM guidance largely confirming this. However, some more
ordinary/sub-severe convection, or lighter trailing stratiform
rainfall, may clip southern parts of the region over the next
several hours.

There is also some possibility of renewed convective development
over the region, spurred by the onset of daytime heating and weak
forcing from the approach of one or more remnant MCVs leftover from
the MCSs to our west and southwest. The southern portions of the
area will continue to be the most favored for this due to having the
better moisture and instability. The most likely time frame for any
convection would be from early morning to mid-afternoon today. PoPs
are staggered to reflect the forecast thinking, with the highest
values on Delmarva. Have added at least slgt chc PoPs all across the
region though given radar trends suggest some light showers could
even clip our northern zones. Given the forecast trends, have
removed enhanced convective wording from most areas in the grids,
except for some parts of Delmarva where locally heavy downpours or
gusty winds may still be possible.

The key takeaway regarding the convective forecast is that this
should largely be a non-event in our region in terms of severe
weather. While the setup is comparable to some notable MCS/derecho
events to affect the region in years past, the ingredients will not
quite line up for it this time.

By later afternoon and evening, dry weather should prevail across
most or all of the region. In fact, it should turn into a very nice
day in many areas. The light northerly flow behind the front will
help keep temperatures near to below average and lead to lower
humidity especially to the north. Highs in the upper 70s and low 80s
are forecast.

Overnight, quiet weather continues. With mostly clear skies and
light winds, temperatures should at least drop to seasonable levels,
favoring the low 60s. Guidance is not really indicating any fog
development tonight, but would not be surprised to see a bit of
radiation fog in the more typically prone locations.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A quiet period Wednesday and Thursday with a stalled front to our
south and an occluded surface and mid-level low over the Canadian
Maritimes. Interestingly, the pattern is somewhat reminiscent of a
cold air damming scenario, though this time of year, such patterns
result in more comfortable conditions with dew points in tolerable
levels in the low 60s and little added heat index. Meanwhile, the
mid-level ridge responsible for the record head over the mid-section
of the nation will shift over the Southeast, yielding mid-level
height rises for our region, but just producing more seasonable
highs in the low to mid 80s over the region. The more noticeably hot
airmass remains south of the front to our south over the Carolinas.

Highs Wednesday will range from the M/U 80s and L/M 80s Thursday. A
few showers and thunderstorms may attempt to work their way into the
area, especially over eastern Pennsylvania in association with a lee
side trough ahead of an incoming cold front.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The main feature of the extended forecast period will be a cold
front that moves through the region Thursday night into Friday
morning. With guidance continuing to agree on the development of a
blocking pattern, this results in another closed mid and upper-level
low over the Northeast. This time, the low will camp out over Maine
and New Brunswick. To our west, a strong ridge amplifies well into
the Canadian prairies as an omega block develops.

A secondary front or surface trough looks to move through the region
Friday afternoon as a weak shortwave moves through the amplifying
longer wave trough over southeastern Canada. Kept chance PoPs
through the day as some afternoon showers and thunderstorms may
accompany this feature. Highs Friday will still be quite warm ahead
of the front in the upper 80s and lower 90s.

The weekend looks great for any outdoor plans with dry weather and
highs in the upper 70s to around 80 both Saturday and Sunday.

With northwest flow setting up downstream of the surface high over
the Ohio Valley and a series of shortwaves attempting to round the
crest of the associated mid-level ridge, we may see a somewhat
similar forecast as the past few days. This featuring a frontal
boundary somewhere in the area or to our southwest, providing an
avenue for thunderstorm complexes to travel down, which some of the
global guidance is beginning to hint towards.

.AVIATION /14Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today... Mainly VFR. A continued lowering of CIGs is expected,
and areas south of ILG may have a period of prevailing MVFR CIGs
this morning and early afternoon. Showers and tstms remain
possible across the region today, especially from PHL southward.
These could also bring periods of MVFR conditions, mainly
through 18z. However, the risk for severe tstms appears to have
diminished. Winds mostly northeast at 5 to 10 kt through this
morning. This afternoon, a gradual shift to north or north-
northwest is expected, though areas closer to the coast may
remain northeast. Moderate confidence.

Tonight... VFR. Winds turning near calm. High confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR. Winds from the south-southeast from 5 to 10 knots.
High confidence.

Thursday...VFR with possible restrictions with showers and
thunderstorms into the late evening and overnight ahead of a cold
front. Winds from the south from 5 to 10 knots turning to the
southwest overnight. Moderate confidence.

Friday...Sub-VFR restrictions in the morning as showers and
thunderstorms exit the region as a cold front moves offshore. Winds
from the west-northwest 10 to 15 knots with gusts from 20 to 25
knots in the afternoon. Moderate confidence.

Saturday...VFR. Northwest winds 5 to 15 knots with gusts up to 25
knots in the afternoon. Moderate confidence.

Saturday night...VFR. Northwest winds from 5 to 10 knots. Moderate
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Through today... Sub-SCA conditions expected. Winds mostly northeast
at 10 to 15 kt with some gusts to near 20 kt possible. A shower or
tstm is possible from mid-morning to mid-afternoon especially for
the Atlantic coastal waters of southern New Jersey and Delaware, and
on Delaware Bay. Seas 2 to 3 ft.

Tonight... Sub-SCA conditions expected. Northeast winds initially,
but winds will probably turn light and variable for much of the
night, possibly settling out to west-northwest later in the
night. Seas 2 to 3 ft.

Outlook...

Conditions are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory levels
through Saturday night. Southerly winds may gust from 20 to 25 knots
Thursday night into Friday ahead of a cold front with seas
increasing from 3 to 5 feet, which may require a Small Craft
Advisory.

Rip currents...

A northeast wind around 10 knots is expected this morning along most
of our coast. The wind may become variable in the afternoon from
Long Beach Island, New Jersey northward. Breaking waves are forecast
to be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period east to southeast swell.
There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents
today.

A northeast wind 5 to 10 knots on Wednesday morning is forecast to
become east to southeast around 10 knots in the afternoon. Breaking
waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period east to south
swell. There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip
currents again on Wednesday.

Due to the large tidal range associated with the full moon, use
extra care around the early afternoon low tide. Rip currents could
briefly become an issue around that time on both Tuesday and
Wednesday.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the full moon on today, the highest of the astronomical
tides on the Atlantic Coast are within one half foot of minor
flooding thresholds through Thursday. Consequently, it will not
take much to result in minor coastal flooding.

Today, the winds could briefly go to northeasterly or even
easterly. This, combined with the slightly higher astronomical
tides could result in widespread minor flooding on the Atlantic
coast and even along the shores of the Delaware Bay (though
astronomical tides here are slightly further from minor flooding
thresholds) with the high tide cycle this evening. For tidal
portions of the Delaware river, spotty minor tidal flooding is
possible. Along the northeastern Chesapeake Bay, the
northeasterly and even northerly flow, would favor lower tide
levels, so tidal flooding is not expected.

Easterly flow redevelops Wednesday, so another round of
widespread minor tidal flooding will be possible with the high
tide Wednesday evening, primarily for the Atlantic Coast and the
Delaware Bay.
